Press investement

So, since I'm no longer working for Sportsmans, I figure I should probably invest in my own press here at home.

I've used Apple's press quite a bit as well as an electronic press we got a few months back.

I've heard people argue that Apple can damage bows if you're not careful, but I've also had people swear up and down that Apple is the way to go.

If you were in my shoes, what would you buy?

When I finally break down and buy a permanent press for my home shop, this will be the one:

If you are going to press a lot of bows it may be wise to invest in an Apple or something similar. If you are just doing your own and maybe a friends here and there, thenone of the many "ratchet strap" presses that are out there should work just fine. It would also be much cheaper.

They make the electronic press I mentioned, Greg.

Money... I'm sure I could talk my dad into going in half on one if it were really expensive, as he generally has me do all of the work on his bow...

How much are we talking?

THAT'S THE ONE!! I was trying to remember the name of that rascal, thanks greg. (and greg, by the way.....what's a guy gotta do to get one of these antered buck thingy's for a post? Guy does up a great review on a sight, nothin....where's the love bro?? :D)

That baby is SWEET! We ordered 2 of them for the shop.

RE: Press investement

Any idea as far as prices go on that press?

mobow 01-24-2008 07:18 PM

RE: Press investement

Depends on which model you get. They make 4, as I recall. Well, 2 basic styles, and each either electric or manual.

The most basic is like you see there, and the other will rotate up 90* so you can level your arrow and such w/out removing the bow from the press.....

Man, I can't remember...gimme a minute....

Somewhere in the 350-400 range for the basic I think.......Dude, don't quote me on that though....I don't remember for sure.

i still havent really found a need to buy a press bigger than the one WWAG makes. I back out the limb bolts on my general, and can press it. I could press my liberty with it, and I can press the non parallel limb bows with it. Plus, i can EASILY throw it in the truck and take it on the road.

Rob/PA Bowyer 01-24-2008 07:34 PM

RE: Press investement

You can buy my Apple and I'll buy that one...LOL

Can't press the General in my Apple, can't press the 82nd in my Apple or most of the parallel limb bows. I have a Bowmender for them BUT, the Bowmendor won't press the General either.

I was recommended to the X Press but whew, expensive.

Greg / MO, that pressed you pictured there, press all the bows mentioned?

Sorry... I was putting my oldest boy to bed. Already got the nine-month-old as snug as a bug... ;)(Yep, Momma's getting a night out on the town with a girlfriend catching a chick flic! :DMakeup time for four straight months of hunting including over 70 stand sits.)

Stand price is somewhere around $535 or so if memory serves me correct, and -- yes, there's not a bow this press can't handle, including all our new ones.

Don, I've been super swamped... let me go check out your thread. :)

Sweet deal, Greg.

Thats really not a bad price, as I was planning on spending between $500 and $700 on a good quality press. I know the electronic one we used at work was just...awesome. The basic model would work fine for me though.

I'm growing tired of your excuses, Greg.......I mean, sheesh.....Working the bow show, working your full time job, raising kids, givin momma a night out.....It just won't fly anymore bro.....Just won't fly....:D:Dj/k of course.

My new years resolution was to start writing again, Greg.

I haven't written much since my senior year.

hey Rob, the bowmender does indeed work on the general. Back out the limb bolts until you can see the ends of the bolts in the viewing hole, pull the cables off the roller gaurd, and in 2 or 3 cranks of the ratchet, the string is limp.

It really helps to have a bowscale to get it back to the exact same poundage though.

davidmil 01-25-2008 04:45 PM

RE: Press investement

Rob, they make special brackets for the Apple that will allow you to press those bows without damaging them.

yeah, Rob, insane. I thought about taking my welder and building one, but the bowmender works too well for as much as I use it.

Rob, the bracketts from Apple look like the fingers of this EZ Press except it's a one piece unit for each limb. They slide right under the press rollers. I'm not sure, but they aren't cheap.. I think something like $50 a pair.

I was going to say build your own, it's not difficult to figure out. This press takes it to a level of easy even I didn't think about. It's a bar clamp on a stand. The only reason I can think of for not seeing it must be because all the other stands pull a bow down.

Thanks for the picture. They charge a lot for this! Got to be some country boys, ya know them slow witted guys. I see their Alabam'ns. Stupid me, I even used bar clamps to build my last press out of some wild cherry and oak. I've got an excuss though, I was born in the city and didn't make it out during the early impressional years.:D

Lot of dead ends trying to find info on them though. That can't be good.

Just looking at it though,I don't like the way the cams are covered by the clamps. It also is pressing a hoyt in an unrecommended fashion, at least based on the pressing info I have. It's a couple years old though. Things most likely have changed with the new styles. Then again it's not really pressing it at all.
