Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
GMMAT, buckmaster, and myself are shooting a 3D tournamentnext Sunday, as some may know.
Being the good "bookie" I am, I like to lay out the bets/odds early. :D So who's going to win this showdown in Mt. Airy, NC? Will it be... Jeff(GMMAT) , battling the new release, but shooting GREAT in the Vegas leagues. He has a little outdoor 3D experience, but not much. Shooting bowhunter setup. -or- Will it be Aaron (buckmaster). Shooting his Bear. He just put a new single pin sight on his bow (I think). Has a few outdoor shoots under his belt aswell. Shooting bowhunter setup. -or- Will it be Matt (Matt/TN). Shooting the Cardiac. Been shooting pretty stong as of late. Hasn't shot this bow as much. Also, hasn't ever shot an outdoor 3D round but has shot indoor 3d. Also shooting bowhunter setup. So weigh the odd's a place your bets, and give us some predictions :D[8D] |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
My money is on Jeff, the guy puts 110% into everything he does even when he doesnt know it.
|
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
I'm going with Aaron, then Jeff, then you Matt. No offense[8D]
Original Matt/TN: I'm honestly not too sure of my yardage judging skills. This will be my first outdoor 3d tourny. I'm chalking it up as a learning experience. I got Aaron by 8 Edit: Prediction stands as of now. Jeff, what release do you plan on using. Have a great time guys, Good Luck. |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
I love the descriptions Matt puts on this. Nice spin!
I'm going with (but this has no bearing on me trying, or not. I'll try every arrow).... Matt.....Aaron.....Me. In my opinion.....being young and having all the time in the world (and seemingly all the money...lol) to devote to this sport (target shooting) is a HUGE advantage. I'm happy for him. I used to see this a LOT in golf. You had guys living with their parents that were in from or just out of college.....and they could practice and play the game every day. HUGE, HUGE advantage. There's no substitute for it. I'm happy for anyone in this situation. I have shot one round of 3D with a thumb release. I'm shooting my second, today. Me and Aaron.....we have fun. We always do.;) Aaron....you know how you and I shoot. If Matt's one of those guys who takes 2 hours to watch 60 minutes.....I'll break his neck and we'll leave him on the trail.:) Giddyup, Matt;) My money is on Jeff, the guy puts 110% into everything he does even when he doesnt know it. |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
i'll say Aaron then Matt then Jeff
|
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
I do not know Aaron's skills so I am going to leave him out of this prediction.... Matt will be to flustered and making excuses and Jeff will lay it on him. You talk about how you are a 3D shooter and not a spot shooter and now you say you never shot an outdoor 3D.... D'OH :D Moneys on GMMAT ;) [/align] |

RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
Where are these shoots at I am looking to go. Is there a website listing the local events? I have been checking a few but it is hard to tell where they are at.
|
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
I say whoever is the most "on" will win. How's that for a safe bet. What I'd like to see is the three of you go into an area that none of you know about and do a cold hunt during bow season to see who scores the best. That would be a true challenge and would be exciting to watch.

RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
Matt:
I just heard, today.....that everyone shoots from the same stakes at the Sage Creek shoot. The difference is in the equipment. Bring whichever rig you WANT to bring. We'll all be shooting from the same place, anyways. I may go up there, Saturday, and shoot my very first trad 3D round. I'm thinking that would be a blast....if I only have enough arrows! |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
Are you sure you get to shoot from the same stake? On their webpage it lists different stakes for different classes. How about I just bring both bows :D
|
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
How about you just shoot whichever class you want to and not worry about the stakes. I've shot in two outdoor 3D's so far....and both times I've shot with guys shooting longer stakes than me. It's not an issue. Not one bit. I'll say it one more time and then I really don't care, anymore.
Shoot what you want to. A guy I shot with today said everyone shoots the same stakes at Sage Creek. He shoots open classWITH a hunting rig.;) |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
I'm going to go with Jeff on this one. Although Matt is shooting awesome in the league, judging yardage is the name of the game in 3d. That and Jeff shot 8 deer this year at different yardages. I think that experience alone puts him over the top by a little. So i'm going with Jeff, then Matt, then Aaron. Good luck to all you guys tho. I'm sure it will be a blast.

RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
I am going with Jeff
If it's close he will start playing mind games with the lads, they won't be able it handle it:D |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
Let me ask you guys something.....
If any of you are 3D shoot vets.....what's the deal with taking so much damned time to shoot? I think guys relate it to some "pros" they've seen or something. I know when a lot of golfers "think" they're playing at the "next" level.....they seem to relate that to how much time they take to pull the trigger. There's only one thing worse than having to endure somebody slow. That's having to endure somebody slow and bad. I shot with the guy who probably won the open class, today....but he was slower than Christmas. What's the big deal? He asked me one time how I got the yardage so quickly. I said I didn;t....I just guess fast. If I analyzed every freakin shot that much....it would take the fun out of it, for me. I played golf fast, too. When people used to ask me the course record at the club I worked at....I told them 1:24. |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
Welcome to 3D jeff:D
I heckle those guys[8D] I ask do you think a buck will sit there why you Glass him three times check you arrrow 4 times stand there while your adjust you yardage on you site :D |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING ABOUT?
It takes me "MAYBE" 10 seconds to get my yardage. After that....if I think about it....I'm screwing up. I pick one and commit. The thing that takes the most time with me.....is glassing the target to try to find something to aim at. I admit it takes me a few seconds on this, sometimes. But I do all of this with my bow in my hand. Guy today.....EVERY SINGLE TARGET......whether he shot first or last.....he'd set his bow down in fornt of him and lean it agains him. I swear he had time to incorporate the Lord's Prayer into his pre-shot routine. I almost caught myself saying "Forever and Ever, Amen", once.[&:] |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
I usually take a little time. Not alot though. I like glassing the target and then making a yardage adjustment. I agree, taking too long can screw you up, but getting in a hurry can screw you up worse. If I shoot my hunting bow, I'll be quick. the open bow, I'll take a little more time on, but not alot.
Jeff, I understand you don't care what stake I shoot. i'm just not ready for 50yd outdoor open class. If everyone shoots from the same stake, then I'll shoot the open bow. If they are divided, I'll shoot hunter, with you guys. |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
Smart money's on Jeff.
|
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
Jeff, did it take him 2 hours to watch 60 minutes?:D...
Im putting it like this, GMMAT and MATT will run pretty close together the whole match, buckmaster will be far behind until they get to the Velociraptor, then Aaron will pull his X out..., but still isnt enough with the results as follows: 1.GMMAT 2.MATT . . . . . . . . . . . .Buckmaster Im serious i suck i cant judge yardage for crap, but i have fun at it so maybe one day ill get better...[&:] |

Huh, I think I like this. The two young guns being the underdogs. Aaron, we can take him. I'll take out his knees, and then you go high. Oh, nevermind, we're talking about archery.[8D]. In that case, lets just try to rattle him...We can bottom his limbs out and move his peep when he's not looking :D.

I agree that some take entirely too long and when I see a guy glassing a target after the shot from the stake,it pisses me off, especially when they are in front of me,get the hell out of the way,you can't bring the arrow back now. |
RE: Place your bets....Mount Airy showdown.
The biggest reason is because you are GUESSING yardage and they are JUDGING yardage. When most judge, they have 3 methods of doing it so it takes a little bit of time. When shooting a slide bar that has to be adjusted, there is no pulling up,gapping the shot and letting it fly. The binos are to find a reference point on the target to aim for or off of. I agree that some take entirely too long and when I see a guy glassing a target after the shot from the stake,it pisses me off, especially when they are in front of me,get the hell out of the way,you can't bring the arrow back now. SLOWER does NOT always = better. |
