North vs. South

How many of you have hunted in the south but live in the north? I have always hunted here b/c I live here, never been up north. I have talked to guys that have hunted in the north and they say there seems to be less deer, but better quality. I know the mid west is better, so that's not in the equation. We do have big bucks, that is a fact that everyone knows, but I don't know if we have the quanity of big bucks like the north. What do yall think??

Ouch!!! Va the north!! man, you obviously have not been down Monument Ave in Richmond, Va. Take a trip to Richmond and I think you will find out very quickly that Va is surely southern. Not Northern Va, but Southern Va and Western Va, southern to the core.

I have hunted in FL, VA, PA and NY over the years. FL goes without saying (little deer). VA had some nice deer, but it is like anywhere else. The population is dependent on the area. Here in NY, we have some big deer in the Adirondacks (but, good luck finding them). We tend to have smaller deer in central NY due to younger bucks because of the hunting pressure. PA is the same way. The further you get from the pressure, the better the chances of seeing big deer. I always found the further west I went in VA, the bigger the deer were. Too much hunting pressure in the east.

anyway.......Back to the original question....looking for a little insite on the northern state deer population, not comments on were we live. Oh by the way for those of you who want to debate with VABOWMAN .....dont...he is a high school history teacher.

Gundeck, that is a good statement about western Va, we do have lots of pressure here, but somehow, the bucks still grow pretty well, I would love to see some get up to about 5 yrs old.

Every time I was stationed down south, it seemed the white tails where smaller. But that is probably due to the different types of white tails. I had a friend from WV that told me killed a bruiser that dressed out at 140 lbs. Here in Iowa we call that a fawn! Big bucks, the best beef, and some awesome pork chops are what Iowa is known for.

As far as the historical - cultural banter in the previous posts, I envy anyone who lives close enough to historical sites to visit them on a whim. I've been to Revolutionary, Civil, WWI, WWII, and Korean war sites but I live to far away to make day trips to any other sites.

I know dang well if I went in the southern states to hunt I would have a heck of a time judging deer for maturity, rack size, body size, ect! There body sizes aren't as big as they are up here in Minnesota and I know that would throw me for a loop! I'd be sending pictures on my cell phone to Vabowman asking him how big is this buck, should I shoot him? I'll get down there south some where some year and give it a whirl and see what its all about.

I have hunted Alabama a couple of times but I was Turkey hunting. I wish I could afford to hunt Alberta more. I killed my biggest Bear there and I saw deer that were Hogs, both Whitetails and Mulies:D

So I had rather go North
or West!;)

Over the years I have hunted MI, MD, VA, KY, NC, SC, GA, AL and KS. Iwill be moving to Kansas this year in time to get my resident tag and may jump over to MO and try to poke one of their deer with an arrow. Will also be putting in for tags in ILL and Iowa.
VA has some good bucks in certain areas. One of the nicest buck I ever seen was near Quantico, Big rack small body!

The last 2 years I've went to Nebraska (far NW corner) in Oct and we had a little snow both times, also had some hot weather.
This year I went in Dec. 10" snow, lots of drifts, and No warm weather;)
