Shinning Deer
How many use this as a legal tool in your arsenal? Post any pics if you have them.
Thanks |
RE: Shinning Deer
What is "shinning?" Is that going out and kicking them in the shins to slow 'em down before you shoot 'em or what?

RE: Shinning Deer
Illegal, here.
|
RE: Shinning Deer
It's legal in Indiana as long as you don't have a weapon when doing it.
|
RE: Shinning Deer
im not sure on the legality here, my only question is why would it be illegal if no weapons are present in the truck? I dont see how shining a spotlight would be harmful in anyway with the right intentions.
|
RE: Shinning Deer
It's illegal to eliminate the "bad apple" element.
Why is it illegal for law-abiding citizens (with proper permits)to carry concealed weapons in some places? O/T.....an not my intention. It's illegal here because people would (and DID) abuse it. |
RE: Shinning Deer
Itwas hard for the wardens to stop everyone and check them while people were out shooting deer and other game. So, they made it illegal so there was no question if you are shining they write you a ticket. I dont know if thats the real reason thats just the way i took it but, i`ve heard the sayins "a lock only keeps an honest man out" and i guess that applies to the laws too in a way. JMO

RE: Shinning Deer
I LOVE shining for deer! Is one of my favorite things to do while up north or around here!. Pile the kids in the back of the truck and go for a drive! Its a good as it gets, we put this light on 11 Bull Elk this past Fall! Talk about cool they got freaked and ran straight towards us crossed the 2 track about 10 feet from us! The kids loved it!
I like to shine after the season closes to see what made it thru the hunting pressure and what sheds are going to be around! |
RE: Shinning Deer
i dont, but thinking of starting.
i dont because i dont wanna "get my hopes up" or see a biggun and chase him all season and getting my butt whopped. around here, certain times of the year deer will travel a mile or better for food. roads mean nothing to the deer and they walk and wander pretty decint "home ranges" not uncommon for someone to see a buck on road A and 2 nights later he is spotted a mile or more away on road B. not the rut, not the dead of winter...just a wandering buck...so i havent really used the tactic... though my buddies do spot and my buddy farms...i use them as my info sources...if they are seeing good bucks in a certain field and im not seeing much in my areas, i will move if possible..they know if i tag my buck, i will be back in rifle season to push for them..so they give me good reliable info readily. one thing i might do this year, is use my coon hunting headlamp to shine the fields by foot. alot of out fields cant be shined due to corn against the road or the terrain/road layout...but i CAN spot them on foot with my headlamp.. alot of the "big buck hunters" around here scout by spotting...if i see certain trucks hunting somewhere, i know they must saw one of the bigger bucks there spotting. but they miss alot of them because of the road/terrain and corn and trees blocking their vision...they got so frustrated one year, a couple got caught driving in the fields trying to spot the deer  |
RE: Shinning Deer
I used to shine quite a bit. Burned up alot of miles doing it. Proably would cost way too much money now.

Not arguing with you because i think it is illegal here as well, just failing to realize how a vehicle without a weapon can abuse spotlighting deer. |
RE: Shinning Deer
I do a little shining now and then. You can almost expect to be pulled over by a Conservation Officer each time you do it, which is just fine by me. In fact there has been more than once that I have let a CO know where I have seen other shiners working or something that just didnt look right. There is an ever growing case of antler greed around the area, and I'm more than happy to point out anything suspicious I may have seen.
You really get to see some neat things when shining during the peak of the rut. |
RE: Shinning Deer
I agree, Their are few bad apples in everything we do in life.
Jeff we need to do a reality hunting show where me and you swap hunting area's for a week or two. We both would learn a lot about our respective hunting heritage. My wife comes with me and yours stays down there.;) ORIGINAL: TEmbry15 ORIGINAL: GMMAT It's illegal to eliminate the "bad apple" element. RE: Shinning Deer
Yeah but what you're failing to see is........By making it illegal to spotlight....you take away all the guesswork as to whether someone has a weapon or not. If you're shining.....you're breaking the law.
It was TOO tempting to many, I suppose. |

Ok

RE: Shinning Deer
I am confused my original question was "How many use this as aLEGAL tool in your arsenal?" and I am getting responses from where it is illegal. This should not pertain to you or do I need to work
on rewording my questions? |
RE: Shinning Deer
I love spot lighting deer. It's a activity that many people enjoy, I know I do. They thought about making it illegal here in PA but that failed as many nonhunters like to do it as well. Yes, it is used by poachers but poachers are just that and would do it if illegal too.

RE: Shinning Deer
Fraley, these two guys my friend got game pics of, i got video of them under the light up close. they dissapered about the time the EHD hit the area and were never seen again by any of us. good bucks none the less.
![]() ![]() I know where this guy is (was) we spent alot of hours trying to film him under the light, did not get him on film but got some other giants instead, one possable booner.Note his tounge hanging out, Mabey EHD unfolding or he is just licking his chops. no one got or seen him this season. ![]() |
RE: Shinning Deer
OH man those are sweet bucks. They need to figure out something for that EHD. I am going to google it just so I can read up on it.

RE: Shinning Deer
When I did it I would do it more on places I didn't have permission on, then if I saw something that interested me, I'd approach the owners.
|
RE: Shinning Deer
It is illegal here in SC now, but a lot of land owners have been fighting the state to bring it back. Personally, I see nothing wrong with it as long as you are doing it on your own private land or on your lease or club.
|
RE: Shinning Deer
It is legal in NYS,I havn't done it in many years.I probably should though. We don't have that many fields by me.It would only depress me to see great bucks in area's I couldn't hunt!:D
|
RE: Shinning Deer
I spotlight all spring/summer/fall/winter with varying frequency. In any given year, I'd say I see between 2500 and 5000 deer with the lights. If nothing else, it gives me a good barometer of herd age structure, feeding patterns, deer density and buck quality in the areas.

RE: Shinning Deer
I use it to see what's in my general area. I'm not much for leaving trail cams out, and since pretty much any buck worth shooting is all but nocturnal around here, it's my only real chance at knowing what I can expect for the season.
That being said, I am still confined to my same hunting places whether I would see 10 mature bucks or none while spotting. You guys where it is illegal should be happy. IMO it's a real good blanket for poachers to use to shoot deer. |
RE: Shinning Deer
My son just asked me last night if we could go spot deer and look for sheds. That little 7 yr old
can not wait to be hunting. He wanted blaze orange hunting cloths for christmas but I am waiting until Feb for his bday then he will be really surprised. |
RE: Shinning Deer
I used to do it alot as a scouting tool just to know if you had any good bucks to go after around where we were hunting!! But know I mostly hunt Illinois and Illegal there!! Walt
|
RE: Shinning Deer
Illegal in the Buckeye state, I got to do it in Ky. and had a great time, saw some nice bucks.
