Shed hunting!!!!!

well i was just wondering here in the next 2 or 3 months i plan on gettin out and seeing if i can find any sheds! in past years i have only found 2 shed 0 while actually hunting for them. so My question is were is the best location to find sheds! and when do you start looking for them. i was told to look in woods n then in the fields so my main question is Where do you find the most and your biggest sheds?

i have had luck on creek crossings, and trails that lead from bedding areas to food sources.....and then again i have found them in the middle of the woods and not on a trail

I've heard different theories that people have on where to find the most sheds and I have come to my own conclusion that sheds can be anywhere that a buck may walk. which means anywhere. last year i found one 20 yards from my house.

bedding areas, downed tree tops, food sources, and heavily used trails, but while you`re out keep your eyes open all around.

I'v beendarn lucky to have found quit a few over the last 5-6 years which most of them igave away...though I usually start walking and lookingfrom now until march and most of April ..I have most of my luck walking along fences used for livestock..i guess they tend to drop from the deer when they hop or go throughthe fences.Basically i start looking in the places the deer are bound to jump, shake or rattle their heads going such as reveens, Big diches, creek bottoms, hollows, orpaths that go through thick briar patches.

If you have snow, try and get out while the snow is on the ground to figure out where the deer are, trails, bedding areas, feeding areas. While scouting these areas keep an eye out for either antlers laying on top of the snow or at least poking out through the snow.

Once the snow melts head back to these areas/trails and take a hard look.

If in cold weather areas but not necessarily snowy, try southern exposures, don't know bout you but I like the sun on me while resting, deer do also, have found a fair amount of sheds in areas like these, especially close to food sources.

Once you have done this for a few years (assuming you have access to the property for more than a few years) you will start noticing that certain areas produce antlers year after year. Took about 4-5 years of looking on a buddies property before we figured it out (about 500 acres) and now consistantly find about 3 dozen antlers a year, and 80% of those antlers are found in small 1-3 acre areas (maybe 4-5 spots). The land that I hunt, about 300 acres, we find about 2 dozen antlers a year, and those are also found in 1-3 acre areas (3-4 spots)

Outside of those areas of course are just the random drops, middle of the road, poking out of canary grass, turned up when plowing the food plots, found in the crotches of trees (got some strong squirrels yanno) matched sets are pretty rare, for the most part it is individual antlers.

And even if you don't find anything, it is still better than sitting around listening to the spouse try and think up stuff for you to be doing so you aren't 'bored' ;)
