3D shoot tonight..

Tonight we had a 3d/spot shoot at the shop. I'm not as good at dots so I opted out for that but I was game on for 3D. I ended up comming in 5th behind a semi pro for Mathews, who got first. I should have had a solid 3rd but I screwed it up in the last round and actually shot down for that round. I was pleased, with taking 5th out of 30 some odd shooters with a borrowed scope and borrowed, overpined arrows. I should be in buisness next week though. I have a new scope, arrows and spring steel headed my way now. I've got room to improve, but I'm getting ready to start working with Nathan a little (the Mathews guy). He's the best shooter I've seen in person, by far.

Here's some pictures I got for the night.

Some 3D shooters:

Me, thought it was a cool picture:

Nathan Winters, (Mathews guy)

3D shooters:

Dot shooters:

My Boss, shooting spots.

This guy is a machine. I've seen him shoot 300 52x's on a 5spot and a 300 20 on a Vegas face, 30 arrows.

Congrats, Matt. Nice looking range, too.

We usually have around 30 in our indoor shoots, too. You did good.

One thing I noticed.......almost everyone is shooting thumb releases (or BT). There's something to them, I guess.

Yeah Jeff, it's the way to go. Once you get up into the Pro rankings, it's about a split, as to what the pro's are shooting. I'd say more are shooting BT instead of Thumb, but that's just a guess. Nathan, the guy in the picture, shoots an ST-3, and it's set HAIRY! Somehow he still pulls on it though.

When are we going to shoot?

Im intrigued by BT but tell me this,,, how long would it take to learn one and how many times would i bust myself in the nose?

Nock on wood :), I've never busted myself in the nose.

I first tried it a few months ago and thought it was "ok".

I didn't want to keep shooting it, so I went through a couple different Thumb triggers on my "punching" parade. I wouldn't neccessarily "punch" them all but I would anticipate. I finally got fed up and switch the complete backtension. I've been shooting it for a few weeks now, and I like it, ALOT. My scores have really taken a jump. My release of choice right now is a Scott Longhorn Pro Advantage. I love it.

Aaron, I'll let you shoot mine whenever we get together and shoot. ;)

How does a BT release work?

Mat

RE: 3D shoot tonight..

A BT release is a triggerless release. It works off a half moon inside the release. Some may refer to it as a "hinge" style release. There are a few different ways you can shoot them. Most of them have a "thumb post" to hold onto when you draw. You want to draw with your thumb and index finger.

There are a few different ways to shoot them, some people shoot it by taking there thumb off the post and reulling with their middle and ring finger, while relaxing their pointer finger. Some will shoot them by just pulling their guts out and not taking their thumb off the post, and having the release set up a little lighter.

This is the exact one I shoot, the three finger model.

Do you find that the BT releases are hard to get used to? I'm currently shooting a wrist style release and I want to buy a new one but not sure if i should get a thumb release or a BT.

They can be frustrating at first, but so are thumb releases (ask GMMAT). The correct answer here probably is that with a thumb style release you can employ backtension and then you can still hunt with it too. For me, backtension was the way to go, but I went through my fair share of releases to get to the backtension. I would probably suggest trying a couple before you buy, or buy some used ones. You can usually pick up some cheap BT's for around 50 bucks over on the "other" site. For hunting, I will continue to use a wrist strap release, just because it's easier to use.

i was looking at one on ebay that had a safety, you set the safety, drew back, then pressed and held the safety again. then it was all back tension, dont know if you seen one like that or not but it was a sort of neat concept.

I'm not familiar with that one but a good safety backtension that I know of is a Carter Solution.

You have an indoor 3-d range just down the road in Evansvilleand they have45 yard shots and leagues.Doesn't look that nice but they have 20 3-d targets setup to 45 yards.

They also have a spot range on the other side of the shop.

OOPS,I just reread your post, you were talking about the shop in Evansville wasn't you.
