Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Okay, I'm heading to Cabela's in exactly two hours to purchase a brand-spanking-new recurve bow. I will shootsaid bow in my basement tonight for probably an hour (range < 20 feet).
I still have a PA doe tag. So, I'm gonna mix and match some old arrows and see what works best, and I'm going hunting... Tomorrow Morning. Then the following morning. So Ethics Police: Feel free to roast me alive. I really don't care. I'm licensed. I'm armed. And I'm going. * I will add that I do know how to shoot recurve - grew up shooting one. But byno means am I"good at it." I used to play in my yard with my old one until I lost it last year. * |

RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Cmon man,
You're in Pittsburgh. How cold could it be tonight? 20-25. Get out there with the truck lights on the target and practice at 20 and 30 yards. Then get out there and tell us about the bigdoe you killed tomorrow morning Or....do a preemptive strike and post a "i gut shot a deer, now what?" thread. This way you will be prepared for tomorrow;);):D |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Danny - I've already got a ground blind built and ready in a natural funnel. Should be a 10 yard shot or less, if the wind cooperates. My biggest problem is that the deer are still pretty shell-shocked from gun season. I think it's supposed to rain, too - which puts a damper on things. (pun intended.)
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Good luck tomorrow QS. I actually voted that you'd get one.
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Pick up some Rage 2 blades. You need all the margin for error you can get. I'm glad I live several states away, I'm not up for a 12 hour blood trailing job.;):D
J/K man, good luck.BTW, we all know you are out of buck tags. Play accordingly.[8D] |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Lucky schmuck will probably get one! [8D]
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
I'm more intriqued by this statement:
I used to play in my yard with my old one until I lost it last year. * You lost a bow in your yard and now expect us to guess how well you'll do with another?? I'm betting you lose this one too! |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Readthis story from this year...
I guyI know who has never bowhunted is given an old bow (no components other than arrow rest) by a friend of his so he can go bowhunting the NEXT DAY. The bow that was given to him had a draw length of 32 inches...this guy is only 5 '8. He brought the bow to the local sporting goods store to get set up with some components but since the bow is very old they didn't have any sights that would attach to it. So they told him to just draw back to the side of his face...look down the side of the arrow and let it fly. So the next day he went hunting and shot a 6 point buck at 23 yards...with a draw length 4 iches too long...no sights...no practice... and shooting fingers with an arrow rest that should only be used with a release.:D |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
I think the first and last choice are basically the same. I am guessing 20% chance you get one, 70% chance you strike out and 10% chance you shoot yourself with the new bow! :D
Just kidding. Best of luck. Make it close and make it count! |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Gr8: I really have no idea what happened to the old bow. It was delaminating anyway.
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
I guess I'm the only one that says......if you're capable andcan pull it off.....good luck!
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
I guess I'm the only one that says " Who cares?"
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Is this Fran A/K/A Byron Ferguson Quicksilver? I say if you don't purposely skip the arrow off a rock before you center punch itin that on a deer baseball sized area where the windpipe meets the collar bone area of a human, well you just havn't challenged yourself enough.
When you are a natural who needs practice! |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
So Ethics Police: Feel free to roast me alive. I really don't care. I'm licensed. I'm armed. And I'm going. Kill, wound, miss , no shot, or see nothing. Any of which can happen to any of us at anytime no matter how much we practice. If you can live with a doe with an arrow sticking out of it's neck or assbecause you can attribute it to a lack of realistic practice then that's your bag. Here's hoping you double lung one but your not stacking the odds in your's or the deer's favor for a pretty outcome. You can't kill something if you don't shoot at it, but we also have some degree of responsibility to be as prepared as we can be IMO. Why start a thread basically taunting those of us who might not agree to actually speak up and disagree for fear of an argument? "Here's what I'm going to do regardless of what you say ,but hey how about some feedback anyway?" Either do it or don't,but what's the point other than creating an argument? I know first hand what you are setting yourself up for, and I wishany deer you shoot atthe best of luck for a quick death. Hypothetically.......Would you be critical of saya 30 yr old guy who is buying his first compound at Wal-Mart thenight before the archery opener and asking the clerk which mechanical broadhead's he should buy for his 40# PSE Nova for the morning's hunt? There are degrees of responsibility related to ignorance (lack of knowledge) which may or may not be learned through trial and error, and then there is simply knowing better and doing it anyway against your better judgement. |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Fran, now it is time to tell Matt you were kidding! You were kidding weren't you?
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions

|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Quick with the year you are having I bet you'll get 1.
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Come on Scot - you know me better than that... If I say I'm going recurve hunting tomorrow, by god, I am.
Matt - you're right. Any time you go bowhunting (or even GUN hunting) - you run the risk of a bad hit. If I was afraid of losing a deer, I wouldn't hunt. At all. Everytime I step out of the car with the bow in my hand, I am 100% prepared to cope with whatever happens that day - good or bad. I know my limits, and I'm 100% prepared for whatever transpires, good or bad. This is about trusting your gut, enjoying yourselfand beingcomfortable withyour ability to recover what you shoot, not worrying about what other people think is outside the bounds of their own ethical constraints. I'll try to hit you guys with an update tomorrow. I'm giving myself a 10% chance of taking a shot, with a 5-7% chance of success. Ideally, I'd like to keep it under 10 yards, but I think I'd stretch it out a few more yards if given the opportunity. |

RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Its like ridin a bike at 10 yards if you know how to do it and are a seasoned bowhunter IMO. Know your limits and you will be fine!!!
:D |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
I think you wont be able to find a hat to fit you head at Cabelas.
Please post at top to poll, so I can mark it . |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Here'shoping that you get as muchout of your hunt as you have investedpreparing for it.
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Not a chance on getting a deer. But a gaurantee that you'll have fun. Good luck!
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Step I: Check. Bow obtained.
A few test shots at the indoor range was enough to confirmthat I am more than capable at 10 yards. $120 in the Bargain Cave. 50# PSE Impala Recurve, complete with ghetto finger grip doodads. I even had time to customize it with a few awesome stickers. They were $190 initially, but discounted in the cave, then I haggled it down an additional twenty bills. Man, I'm so cheap, it's actually scary. ![]() ![]() |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Good luck than:D
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
youre a schmuck so youll probably end up getting one :D
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
I'll say "Good Luck Fran!"
I'ld also guess that if you are not comfortable with the shot it will not be taken right? THings change so much when you are in the woods with a deer aproaching. Everything has to go perfect otherwise the shot does not happen, seconds one way or the other and the chance is blown anyway. I hope to see a confimed kill picture and I really want to see a certain hat on your head. Dandbuck PS, mail headed your way, hope your feet don't get cold;). |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
If this istrue I think that you're a peckerhead for even trying it. If it's not true who cares.
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
This just in.....
AP-PIttsburgh Reports from the field stream in regarding the adventures of QS. 3 deer spotted but no arrows sent airborne. |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Everyone who chose "less than zero percent chance of success" wins an all-expense-paid membership to Huntingnet for the next 30 days!
I saw 3 deer, and they were all the way over on the next ridge - maybe 300 yards - just outside my effective recurve range. I was taunted by a black cat (that I refrained from shooting). Lots of rain though. Rain, Rain, Rain. No sheds either. I did manage to shoot a tin can and an old, dryrotten Charlotte Hornets basketball that I found laying down off the roadway, so the day wasn't a complete waste. I stillhunted an entire cornfield (still standing) and didn't bump out a single deer. [>:] Back at it tomorrow. |
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
Wonderful.......
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
I practice with my recurve for 2 years before I hunted with it this year for the first time. Still looking for my first with Trad gear. I had one chance this year and shot low. There is no-way I could have went hunting with it the next day after I bought it. Whatever rocks you boat I gess. Goodluck on you hunt but I voted #5!!! Be Safe!!!!

RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
To each his own. But I would not do it. Good luck on your hunt tomorrow
|
RE: Huntingnet Mythbusters: Your predictions
All I can say is pick a spot. Only look at that spot. Its just like throwing a baseball. I think. Good luck. My prediction is if you shoot you will either stick one good or miss wildly.
