Is it rude?

Is it rude to call your taxidermistto ask if you can come over and hold your deer's antlers?

I miss them. I hunted for them for 3 seasons and held them for 1 minute.:D[8D]

:D:D:D

Just go get them........he doesn't need them until the cape is back and he's ready to do the final mounting.
Then just have him give you a call when he's ready and take them back.

;)

Not if you want to be told that he's got something you can hold! [:-]

I agree I kept them until the taxi was ready for them.

I know it's hard to believe, but I'll have mine back in about 6 weeks or so. [8D] My guy is pretty quick. He's good, but limits himself to 30 heads a year and I was like 5th in line or so......

Last year the buck we found dead that I had history with was finished in March, and we didn't get him till nearly the end of rifle season.........we were close to last in line with him.

Just in time to put on the wall in my newly renovated livingroom...or manroom.......wherever she wants it....[:-]

Yep.....My taxi gets my antlers when he's ready for them. He'd rather do it that way too.

You guys must do things differently up there, Greg.:)

I dunno. It sure was a surprise to get the first one back.....after not seeing it for 9 months. I may just wait on this one, too.

Honestly.....we go after these deer all season.....and we only get to admire their beauty (when we're fortunate enough to take on) for a precious few minutes/hours. That doe I shot the other night was absolutely a beautiful animal. Hope this doesn't sound "weird".

the buck i killed in 2004 had a turn around of 40 days....killed it november 14 and he got it back to my dad on christmas eve so i could get it as a present. he does like 50-70 heads a year, but since i was a youth hunter then he put me at the top of the list. most kids mounts he gets done take less than 2 months lol. if i happen to kill one now, itll probably take a year or better because he is still tryin to catch up.

Heck no it isn't rude, its your buck and your proud of it! Mine is sitting at home with me waiting to get officialy measured by the P@Y, the drying period ends on Dec 24th, can't wait!

I killed a 153 this year (my first one for the wall)

I just asked when I dropped it off. He said I can go get them because he doesn't need them untill he mounts it later.

I know what you mean about just wanting to admire the animal. We spend countless hours in the woods in search of an animal like this. And when you get one you have such a short time to admire it before it goes to the butcher (unless you do to yourself)and then taxidermist.

Go get 'em.

All kinda new to me, guys.....but I think I'm just going to leave them there and be pleasantly surprised when I get him back. If I ever shot a really big one (relative;))....I might think differently (like most of you guys deer.....congrats).;)

How did he get the hide tanned i wonder in that short of time? Hope he did it the right way!

With a turnaround like 40 days, he probably used a home tan (if he tanned at all). For example, there is a tanning solution called Krowtann that thousands of taxidermist use to tan their capes without having to send them out to a commercial tannery. With this method, a taxidermist can kick out mounts fairly quick.....here is an example.....

Day 1 - Cape the head, rough flesh, split lips, eyes, nose, turn ears, and place in Krowtann
Days 2-6 - Cape sits in Krowtann
Day 7 - Remove cape from Krowtann, neutralize, final flesh, and mount.
Days 8-22 - Drying time
Day 23 - Finish/paint the mount

The above timeline is if one was dedicating their time to the one mount and using a home-tan. However, most full time taxidermist can't tan the cape and flesh/shave it for what it costs for commercial tannery to do it. Thier time is worth more than that.....so they typically send it out. Bottom line, a mount can be done in 40 days and the cape can be tanned (instead of a dry preserve...which I would never recommend).

I wouldn't either, thats why i asked the question i did. I've mounted a few deer and used the quick method, its quick but the quality is nothing compaired to doing it the right way!

I visit my taxi all the time. He is a good friend, and I get to hold all the antlers I want.

And to answr another ?. He tans his own hides as I guess a lot of them do now. So turn around is not that long. He has a lot of bow deer finished already, and delivered to the customers.

RE: Is it rude?

Around home I Would keep the antlers until the taxidermist needs them.Out of state it is not practical to do that. There is always this fear that you may never see them again through theft or shipping issues. It is always a sense of relief to have them back in your posession intact.
Instead of sounding like a 12 year old (not there is anything wrong with that) tell your taxidermist that a close relative is very ill and you would like for them to see them before they pass,or you were entered in a buck contest and they have to be measured by their measurer. These examples sound a lot better than just going to visit them!
Of course there is always the ego inflating reason to leave them at the taxidermist so all the other hunters come in and ask "who shot that beast" and you have a legend in the making!

Dude....I'm talking about the buck in my avatar!:D I don't think anyone is going to be egotized by him!:D I go by my taxi's house a few times a month. I WOULD like to get them scored for the NCBA. I might just do that.

Thanks, guys.

My antlers, my house....

The taxi don't need the antlers till just before they go on. If they are in your house you have some control over them.

Sitting over at the taxi, be a dang shame if something happens to them over there.....year or two ago, a taxidermist around here was broken into and about a half a dozen or so antler sets were taken.....be a shame to lose your permenant memento of that seasons hunt that way. Probably the main reason why my current taxidermist asks you to take your antlers home with you.....

It's not rude at all, I just don't like to get them, I think it kinda of spoils the mount when you do get it back, b/c you have been looking at the antlers for a while. But, that's just me!!

My taxi had a sign that outside his door that said..."Don't call and ask about your mount, We'll call you"...I miss my deer...all I have are pictures but even they are losing there exciting-ness...but I'll be paitent...if I can sit in a treestand for 12 hours and only see squirrals(annoying little creatures) I guess I can wait 5 months...
