Maybe his old one, or he's still wearing the old one.

If I go out and buy everything new this year it will not make me a better hunter, it might allow me to hunt longer, but if I'm not a good hunter all ready that might just mean I'm going to watch finches fly around for a few more hours.:D

I think the funniest part of these types of threads is that they're done on a message board that is sustained by the very industry that is so sorely despised by so many people that contribute to it. If it wasn't for the revenue generated by the evil hunting industry that has ruined the sport for so many of you guys, we wouldn't be able to afford to have such a great place for you to all gather together and complain about it.

Party anyone?

Nobody in the "Hunting Industry" comes by my house, holds a gun to my head and makes me buy their stuff. I buy what I want because I can and I don't buy stuff Idon't want. If I had 1000 acres in Pike County IL, I would make money on it, as would most people. I could care less how "rich" people get selling aproduct as long as it is legit.

That's the best point I have read so far on here Justin!!!! I just hate when people lump everyone togather. I can't find a farm to hunt because nobody lets you hunt for free?? Funny I am hunting a farm in Illinois that I don't pay a dime for good old fashioned hard work!! Get off your butts and go knock on doors for a whole weekend and make it happen. All video's are not shot on outfitted hunts, ours has no outfitters in it and all the hunters are everyday working guys frm around the country that just love to hunt big bucks!! Walt
PS. I would love to know what kind of bow and arrows you shoot and why you bought it?

I can honestly say not one item I have for fishing or hunting was bought because of a celebrity endorsing it.

I think valid points have been made here. When any sport/activity increases in popularity, the cost is going to go up. Given. It's up to us to buy into it or not. So-called spokesmen will be on TV telling everyone how they do it and why they are successful. When sponsers get involved, these so-call experts are paid to attribute success to the product they are pushing. The bows, camo, scent-lok, optics, boots, stands, blinds..................the list goes on and on have now became the reasons for their success.
Very little is discussed and rarelywill you findsuccess attributed to preperation, practice, scouting, during season or in the off season, woodsmanship, knowing the herd or the land from these so-called experts.I imagine the reason is because the sponsors now own them and the "industry" and they dictate what is said and what is done while the experts are in front of the camera. You either choose to buy into it or you choose to see it for what it really is. It really depends on what hunting means to you and what you want it to mean to your kids.

RE: ***ATTENTION All Hunters NEED TO READ THIS!

The problem is not enough quality hunting oppurtunities. More state agencies need to aline their regulations with sound QDM practices. That way public land hunting would be much better. Also, deer hunters pay the the vast majority of license fees in most states. So, state agencies should try to open more public land to provide quality hunting oppertunities for deer hunters. As for the Outdoor Channel and the Hunting DVD's, I like a lot of them. Especially, Michael Waddell's, the Drury Boy's, and Primos, but I don't like watching high fence hunts anywhere. But, what's more important is that a large percentage of the 180 or so middle school boysI have in my P.E. classes love to watch these shows. In a world where there is so many things trying to get kid's attention the Outdoor channel and Hunting DVD's help to attract kids to our sport. So, take a child hunting or fishin' cause if Bill Jordan ain't makin money, we probably ain't huntin' either.

Its easy to be a bit jealous of the opportunities afforded to others, but I'm sure some of them deserve it, so we can paint all Pro-staffers, or the industry with the same broad brush!

Here's my view on "pro-staffers" or whatever you want to call them. It all boils down to marketing certainproducts and selling them. These peopleare ableto draw attention to themselves because of their hunting ability AND their ability to sell. A lot of these guys/gals probably went to school for marketing or have hadsome other type of sales training somewhere. Their ability to promote is better than the average person, not that they are "better" hunters than everyone else. Is Mike Waddela better hunter than I am? Probably, but he has spent 100 times more time in the woods than I have. I would hope that Mike would be good at hunting since that is part of his job. The majority of professionals are all the same, they excell at their sport AND have the ability to sell products. Should these professionals be praised? I know know, but they are just doing their jobs which can be hard work sometimes doing shows/seminars etc. If anyone gets mad at these peoplefor doing their job I think it isfor the most partjealously. Most of these guys have worked their a$$es off to get where they are today so I believe they should get at least a little bit of respect.

Though I rarely watch hunting shows(I'm pretty picky) and I never buy hunting videos anymore I did some serious thinking on what it would be like to be a hunting celebrity. Here is how I envision it:

Meeting and representing the manufacturers who help advertise and help pay for your lifestyle.

Traveling to the various stores for autographs and giving seminars. Traveling throughout the country visiting all the stores that back me doesn't sound like a dream job to me.

Putting on a big smile for the cameras and the public. (insert grouch here)

Attending various deer classics, ATA show, and other various functions throughout the year.

Being away from the family for many days of the year.

The actual hunting itself would be icing on the cake but I think I'll take the way I hunt(being a non-celebrity) over all of that any day of the week.

Sounds like a job to me.;)

What you are seeing is the dark side to a prosperous nation. When people have expendable income, some will not use it as wisely as others and someone else will always be thinking of ways to get that money. (Not that I am condemning the Free Market system, or the Nation's wealth, there are downsides to every system of society and this one is the best despite problems.) We spend more on dogfood then some countries total budget. We love our recreation and are willing to spend money on it. On the upside it allows a lot of people to provide for their families, not just the "Stars" either; the factory worker, the delivery guy, the engineer, envelope stuffer, videographer, marketing agent, etc. For every star we envy/despise there's probably hundreds of "little people", average joes, that are making a living supporting him and selling his goods. Average joes with families that want clothes, food, a nice house and other nice things in life. So if in order to allow a lot of people to have a good life we need to put up with a few conceited "stars", I say the price is small. Is the glass half empty or full? Don't grouse about the negative, look for the positive.
I hope everybody reads what you just wrote here. It is one of the best things I've read.

RE: ***ATTENTION All Hunters NEED TO READ THIS!

I remember when gas was .20 cents a gallon and the gas stations would have "gas wars" where they each would keep dropping the price below the other to attract customers. My dad would get to work and back for a week on 2 or 3 dollars. Yesterday I put $20 (a bit over 6 gallons). I also remember we could just about hunt anywhere for free. Yes times have changed but I suppose they always have and will. I get mad sometimes when I think about how much leases are going for but I don't fault the landowner. His land. He should be able to do with it or make money with how he chooses as long as its legal. I don't get mad at pro staffers. I'd be doing it if I had the chance. I don't get mad at companies or their marketing. They'd be foolish not to market a product people will buy. ANY product that is successful is primarily because enough people find worth in it. If the product is not good, it will have a short lifespan. I actually am somewhat glad we have big business reliant on the hunting population because at some point our hunting privelages become as important to them as they are us. Take us out of the picture and the business will most definitely suffer. I've never bought one item based on a celebrity hunter. I have bought things based on fellow hunters, many here, have said. I do not think you need the newest, or best bow. Nor the newest, best camo. Certainly not carbon clothing. Any you really don't need the big expensive lease. I use products because I WANT to. I use them because they may help in hunting and certainly don't hurt. I've hunted public land and had a great time and harvested deer. Will having the newest, fastest, bestest, camoest, scent-eliminatingest, or biggest, most expensivest lease mean you will harvest P&Y's. No. But sometimes things coupled with your hunting skills may up your odds of success. If you want to hunt, you can. It may not be the King Ranch or some Iowa honeyhole but I've found even hunting less than ideal situations is still better than not hunting at all. I've gotten my son into hunting and am quite grateful for the small areas I've found to let him experience a bit of hunting. Well, thats my thoughts anyway.

I was at a recent Sportsman show and was in a seminar where many so called "Pro Staffers" were there talking about the industry... At the end of the show many people in the audiencewere basically kissing their asses about them taking the time to come and talk to everyone out of their busy schedules.. I couldn't help but to feel angry and disgusted [:@]about how the audience was doing this.. I felt those so called "pro Staffers" should have been kissing our asses and paying us for coming to talk to us since we are the ones as consumers making it possible for them to hunt 12mos. a year..... They think they are professionals because they go on 20 different guided hunts and kill some big animalson those hunts and now they are a pro...orsome type of deer god!

ill agree hunting will become a rich man sport!!! the gear is getting to costly, for instance 750 fora bow!! next thing ya know it will be twice as much!!
Well, they are not going to charge more than what hunters are willing to pay. Can't blame someone for responding to consumer demand.

I do hate to see the cost of hunting rising. Andthe little guys will probably be priced out of the market, with respect to hunting land. For example, the farm I hunt on leases the majorityof thehunt-able acreage to guys fromSt. Louis. Why?Two reasons. 1) $10/acre adds up real fast. 2) The last group of hunters thathunted for free took advantage of the situationandput the landowner in a badspot.(Maybe this goes back to GMMAT's post about hunters having a sizeable number of unsavorycharacters. But I digress.)

Looking at those two factors - added income, less headache - how can you blame the landowner/farmer?Yes, the implication is that some of us, myself included, cannot afford to lease quality hunting ground. We must rely on the mercy of others. And thegovernment in providing public land. :D

The supply of hunting ground is not increasing, so demand is the only thing that could change. And is there ever going to be a decrease in demand? Only if there arefewer hunters.

Butthe common complaint where I live is not that the professional hunters are driving up the cost of land, but that the city people are driving up the cost of land when they are willing to pay thousands to hunt a certain piece of land for 10 days in November.

This being a business controlled by the industry makes it a perfect place to say it then. A persons place to speak back to the industry.A business can listen or not. What do you think a smart business would do?

Over the years in my work I've given millions to a company that listens, those that didn’t pennies. Respect and disrespect go a long way, up to the seller to decide the direction.

There are 2 kinds of people, the customer and the seller. The customer spends their money and expects to get its worth. The seller does their best to defend its practices, in other words if the consumer complains the seller will do their best to blow off the customer. On the net that often comes in the form of ridicule.

These 2 things are how I've come to judge the sincerity of post in these forms. It influences what I buy and how I talk about a product given the chance. Again it’s up to the seller to decide the direction of the conversation.
