If you are going to do a lot of still hunting, I'd recommend Danner 1600's.

RE: whats boots to buy
I have wolverines. One guy I hunt with has rocky's and the other wears irish setters. All are least 2 years old with around 800g of trinsulate. These I havementioned are all in the $100-150range. I would suggest at least 1200g if the temp drops to zero.

RE: whats boots to buy
I bought a Cabela brand boot last year and love them. I used to be 100% Rocky until Cabela came out with a tall rubber boot (which I prefer), 2000 gram insulate, for $90. My feet were always the first thing to get cold....and when they did, the hunt became miserable. Since I got the 2000 gram, my feet haven't gotten near as cold.

RE: whats boots to buy
Muck Woody Extremes! They cost around $139.99, but I am telling you they are awesome. I have hunted in them in about 17 degrees and noting but warm feet. They are rated to -40 below. Not only are they warm, but waterproof. Where I hunt I have to cross 2 streams that are about 14inches deep...NEVER HAS MY FEET BEEN WET with these boots. I was skeptical at first because I had a cheaper pair of "wal mart" rubber boots before that were 1200g thinsulate but my feet got cold. Not with these! Also they are very easy to put on and take off. The upper part of the boot just simply rolls down for easy on and off. When it is cold I wear my scentlock savanna coveralls and an insulated bib plus thermals ans these boots easily slip over all of my clothes. I love 'em!

I have rocky bear claw for late season Nov-Dec, & La Crosse Ice Man for really late season. That a pair of wool sox. Be careful buying "wool" sox. Look @ the actual content of wool. Mine have 85%.Still warm when wet.

RE: whats boots to buy
I have used Cabelas boots for the last 10 years and I am very pleased with them. They are reasonably priced and will last a long time you can't go wrong with them. I have wore a few different styles of there boots and they all have done well.

RE: whats boots to buy

Cabela's "Inferno" boot -- rated to minus 140. :) _____________________________ |

They look a little less bulky, but are they as warm? |

RE: whats boots to buy
You can get some great pac boots on sale right now at Cabelas without breaking the bank....plus have some jing left over for a pair of lighter boots.....uninsulated-800 grams.

RE: whats boots to buy
Dan, I don't remember looking at the ones you mentioned... I haven't pulled the trigger yet as I'm waiting for $1,000 to be dumped onto my Rewards card from my company (good at Bass Pro and Cabelas, among others :)). I'll check out the ones you mentioned... though I do think it's going to be hard to get past the sound of having 2,000 grams of Thinsulate wrapped around my feet while on stand in December! :D

RE: whats boots to buy
I'm def. going to be looking at those Cabela Infernos, i almost bought a $200 pair of Lacrosse boots with the same thinsulate.

ORIGINAL: Greg / MO though I do think it's going to be hard to get past the sound of having 2,000 grams of Thinsulate wrapped around my feet while on stand in December! :D There's a lot more to a boot being warm than the ammount of Thinsulate it has. |
RE: whats boots to buy
Very true, Dan... I will be keeping the receipt on these as well until after I've worn them in sub-freezing temps a few times. The 2,000 grams is what caught my eye initially, but this boot seems to have received some great feedback from users as well. I also like the fact they seem to be built on a hiking boot platform, and look very much like the ones I bought from Cabelas for my elk trip which had 400 grams of Thinsulate in them; those have performed flawlessly, and are supremely comfortable.
I looked in my master catalog tonight for the ones you mentioned... I found some Predator Extremes w/ 1,200 grams of Thinsulate, and they weren't rated for as cold a temp as the Infernos. Maybe they're new and I need to check out their website? |
RE: whats boots to buy
You wimps.;) Talking about 1600 gram and 2000 gram thinsulate. My old Wolverines with 600 gram do good until it gets 20 degrees and below.
Actually for this time of year I opt for 1000 or 1200 gram rubber boots because along with the cold temps its generally muddy, wet and.....just downright sloppy. |
RE: whats boots to buy
Heck I am glad bigtim asked this ? because I was wondering the same thing. Irish Setters sound pretty good to me along with the Cabelas Infernos.

Greg, My bad, the Predator Extremes are 1200 gram....but do have a comfort rating of 10 degrees colder than the Inferno......here's the links. Either boot looks like it would do the job.....I'm just giving you my experiences. Oh yeah, you are correct, it looks like the Infernos would be a lot more comfortable to walk in. RE: whats boots to buy
muck boots for sure. If not Muck i would look at Danner or Irish Setter. To many Rocky and Wolverines get returned to the store with manufacturer defects anymore. I rarely see a muck, danner, or irish setter come back. Its best just to try them on and see what fits for you.
