What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
and why?
This may help others avoid the same mistake.... |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Cheap optics.................may as well just light your money on fire at home to save time.

ORIGINAL: atlasman Cheap optics.................may as well just light your money on fire at home to save time. Cheap arrows fall into this category as well I'm afraid. I will no longer purchase inexpensive arrows. They're inconsistent and not very durable. I would have to say the biggest piece of el crappo I've purchased over the years is that tree umbrella thing. It's a total PITA to set up, and unless the rain is falling STRAIGHT down...yeah, yer gonna get wet. |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Expensive hunting boots! Personally I don't think its worth spending 200.00 dollars on a pair of hunting boots. I use to all the time and it seemed they would last a year or 2 and be falling apart already orthey werenoisy as heck when in a stand. Since then I now buy the same boots I use for work and they last even better and are alot lighter in weight then any hunting boot i've bought!

RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Cheap hunting boots. I went out this season and picked up some late season boots that are amazing. Nothing will ruin my hunt quicker than cold feet! Not anymore!!!!!!!:)

I wasn't talking about winterboots! I spend money on mywinter boots (Ice Mans). I'm talking about early season hunting, September through October.

RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Fuse Satori quiver...I know they have a good reputation, but mine dropped arrows out all the time. [:@] FWIW: I used Maxima Hunter 250's and Carbon Tech Panthers in it.
|
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
A cheap fanny pack. Nothing worse than to have the zipper break after using only a couple of times or the buckle to keep slipping so it falls down to your ankles while packing your stand.[:@]
By the way Patti, you still have that Gerber?:) I field dressed and skinned a doe with mine the other day. |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
I'd have to disagree with mobo, the tree umbrella is one of the most useful tool I've ever bought. I have 2 different tree umbrellas, a big one and a small one. I assume he's talking about the small one and that's my favorite. I use it for a ground blind, use it for stalking, and it's kept me dry in some really bad weather, rain, sleet, hail and snow. If it's going to be windy and raining, I then get out the bigger umbrella. I have had the wind turn the small one inside out a time or two, but if it's that windy, it's probobly too windy to be bow hunting.
I agree with cheap optics, and at the top of my crap list is the Bushnel range finder, (the $135 one) followed closely by my Bushnell pocket size binaculars,(the $50 one) both useless at least 1 hour before dark. Another big waist of money was the red dot sight. The kind that doesn't have a tube but the window style that projects a red dot onto the window to look like a laser dot. Absolute junk! I tried it on 2 different hand guns and even bought a holster to fit only to find out that open sights were faster, a lot more dependable and much more accurate. One other waist of money was my McKensy 3D buck target. It takes a crowbar to get a field point out of it and it isn't muck easier to get a broad head out of it. I have to throw it on it's side, put a foot on it and pull like heck to get an arrow out of it. What a pain. It's too heavy and bulky for A decoy and after a short time out in the elements it rots out, the surface turns to dust! The only other thing I can think of was a pair of gloves. I don't recall the brand but the slogan was something like," the warmest thin gloves in the world." They cost about $20. I tried them one time, it wasn't real cold out, about 40 degrees but my hands were frozen before I even got to my stand. I took them off and my hands were a lot warmer without them than with. Cheap $5 pair of fleece gloves are a lot warmer than these were. I took them back where I bought them thinking maybe they were cold because they were too tight. Traded for the next size bigger and froze my hands again! |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Here's two that stand out:
Western Rivers electronic Predator call. The sounds suck! The worst is their Owl and crow fight.... Its a crow and a mourning dove! Buck Wing Bobbin head deer decoy. It looks real enough and the bobbin head is pretty realistic but the thing is made SO flimsy that it's a royal pain to set it up without it popping apart. It even has a warning molded into the plaastic telling you the warranty doesnt cover dropping the head while the weights are attached. Something thats going to be used out in the feild shouldnt be so fragile that it needs warning labels! |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
True Talker...sorry you lovers of the call but after 3 of them falling apart...never again.
|
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
A Hoyt hat, I just couldnt hit crap waering that hat. No really electric socks, bow holder the fork type.
|
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Cheap optics is a great worst buy... but my funniest and most appropriate end was a "Solar Shower". Supposedly you hang these deals in the sun and you have a nice warm shower. Well, I hung mine, I laid it on the hood of a vehicle for 3 days and finally found out how it works best. The last night when we were ready for bed I threw it on the fire, telling my buddy I figured out how this works. It did heat the water, it burned up the damn thing and put out the fire for the night so the ranger wouldn't get mad. LOL I vote solar shower.

RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Generic EZ hanger. Hard as hell to start in tree and bent on first use. Can't beat the real thing. It is a must have.
|
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
DEER SCENTS, just say no!!
And calls too. What sound can't you make with you mouth? And not have to carry that call around! |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Expensive premium ammo for a 7mm Rem Mag for use on deer with a max distance shot of only 300 yards. Cheap effective soft points are more then effictive at that range.
|
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Rain gear that was made of really nice camo on the outside and then was lined with that white plastic material that was then covered witha mesh material. I couldn't have gotten wetter if I had stood in the rain without it. I'm reallypicky now as to what I pick for rain gear.
|
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Agree with deer scents, I have thrown more money away onthose things yet every year I see soemthing new that I convince myself will work.
The other one is a whicker biskit arrow rest. Ate fletching like crazy and on those windless winter evenings the whiskers froze and drawing an arrow through it sounded like finger nails on a chalkboard. The first deer I ever drew on heard that thing and was gone and so was the biskit. |

RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Deer lure, although I have a couple of companies I have a lot of faith in James Valley,Kishel's and Realdeer.Although in my opinion nothing works better than fresh tarsal glands. If you folks are notusing them you are missing out.I spent a lot of money on lures over the years,no longer.
The only other thing that has gotten me is rain gear,I still havn't found the perfect solution and I have bought a bunch of it.Trying to find rain gear that really keeps you dry and breathes so you don't get soaked from perspiration while hiking and is reasonably quiet has eluded me but has not eluded my dollars. |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Alright someone PM with a good idea on binoc's? $200 is the budget and I dont need them to reach out and touch someone.
|
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Everyone has their opinion.....and mine is the Lone Wolf Alpha stand and climbing sticks as a hunt right away set-up.
I used mine exactly twice....and could never figure out a way to hang it safely.....timely....or energy efficiently (without working up a big sweat). I MUCH prefer a climber (Summit Vipers) to this set-up....and I was terribly disappointed in the system. |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
I agree with cheap boots. Can't beat a good sturdy boot that's going to keep your feet dry and toasty. Not really "gear" related, but if you're into processing your game, don't skimp on a grinder because it's priced good. Buy it right the first time and make sure you'll be using it for years to come.
True Talker...sorry you lovers of the call but after 3 of them falling apart...never again. |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Is it your lucky call now??:D

RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
I can deal with products that don't live up to it, bad customer service on the other hand...
My beef isn't the product it's how I'm treated when there is a problem and the more expensive the product the more burned up I become. If I pay for the best I expect the best and that includes customer service. I wont mention the worst of them because I don't even want to mention their name. One of the last things i bought on ebay was a name brand product. When it showed up it was something the seller had made. When I contacted her she said I know but it's just like the ones they used to sell years ago.:DIt was inexpensive. The laugh was worth the price of admission into her world. |

RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
35mm trail cameras. I bought one and it worked awesome 1 time. Took it backinto the field for3 more times and nothing but blanks. I bought a $100 digital camera at wally world and have had over 100 pics in the the last month on the same trail. Spend a little extra and get a digital. The other thing is deer scents. Spent a fortune and I don't know if they have ever done me any good.

RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Gerber blood light. When they first came out I saw it on TV, and the wife went on the internet and bought one for me. She paid a little over $50! A week later it was in all the local stores for $39.99. Then I tried to use it, and it isn't worth a plug nickel! The regular light on it is OK but the blood light part makes blood harder to find! My friend also got one and he came up with the same conclusion.
Makes a guy wonder if some of these products are made by anti hunters designed to waist our money. lol |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
For hunting, Quickspin vanes.[:'(] Loud, slows your arrow, and not very durable. Might be ok for target shooting, but for hunting, no thanks. Especially when all your shots are over 20 yards.
|
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
For me it was a strap on shooting rail. Impossible to set up easily or quietly. If your stand doesn't have one built in just forget it.
I agree with the cheapoptics and boots. Some things are just worth spending the extra $$ on. |
RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
I'll second some of the cheaper trail cameras. Spend the money for the Cuddebacks or a Moultire I-40. It'll save yourself some frustration.

RE: What's the worst piece of equipment you've bought?
Worst things I've every bought? That's easy!
The Butt-Out Tool! [:@][:@][:@][:@][:@] I mangled the colons of two deer this year before I got ticked off and threw that thing as far as it would fly. All it does is shred the rectum into strips! I watched the video before using it too so I'm pretty sure it wasn't operator error. What a piece of crap.... |
