RE: Shed Question.
I have found sheds as early as a the day after new years, but in most cases (unless you find them right after they drop) the middle of March seems to be the best. This is due to the snow (central Wisconsin) is receding and the horns that were buried in January and February are starting to poke through. However with a healthy critter population (squirrels, porcupines, etc.....) that horn that could lay there for a season or two in one spot will be gnawed down to a nub pretty quickly in a different area. So I find it is best to lace up the boots and go whenever you get a chance any time after xmas/new years. If you do have snow, look for spots that have a nice southern exposure, the snow is melting in these areas, and deer (at least around here) will congregrate in these areas. And if you are having a particulary white season, might be wiser not to put to much stress on the deer by stomping around in bedding areas either. Wait for the snow to drop before you make a hard push looking for them sheds. Best day my buddies and I have ever done is around 12 sheds, towards the end of March with the snow just about all gone. (usually find about 30-40 shedsa year over about 800 non-continuous acres) Good Luck. |
