Hunting with your 3D rig??
How many of you guys get a bow set up for strictly 3D shooting......and end up hunting with it? I'm thinking this may occur, for me.
|
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
I've thought about getting into some 3D shooting, but I'm not willing right now to spend extra money on a SEPERATE bow, so for me, I'm sure I would just shoot HC with my current rig (maybe some slight modifications). Aren't you setting up an 82nd for 3d?
|
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
Yeah (82nd). I'm going to use the same sight, though.....maybe the same stabilizer. I might not use the same rest......but then again....I might.
I'll also be shooting HC. |
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
I hunted with a hoyt protec with spiral cams for 2005 and 2006. It just want practical hunting with a bow that long ATA when I moved back to WV.
|
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
All of my hunting bows were 3-d bows first.
|
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
Never set one up strictly for 3D. But I do shoot some 3D with my hunting bow. I do shoot different arrows tho.Never been that serious into 3D. But I have placed 3rd a few times in HC at some local shoots.

RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
I just placed my order for a LH, Elite GTO, 28.5" draw, #60 limbs, and in all black "ninja" style. That's going to be my hunting and probably 3D bow for this year. Keeping my Vectrix XL is still up for grabs. I'm toying with the idea of powdercoating it and turning it into my open setup.

RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
i shoot 3d with my hunting bow:D
i have mixed feelings about competitive shooting....im 20 and still dont know how i feel about it. ive been shootin guns since i was 3...i learned to shoot a gun before i could do much else...now, im just a "natural" shooter. gimme something to shoot and i'll have it doin what it does in no time...weather its a shotgun busting clays, or shooting a pretty little group with a rifle, or shooting pistols, or now, shooting my bow...im not tooting my own horn...i know im far from the best...but im far from the worst...and with dedication and real training and practice, ive been told i could probably let my shooting "take" me places...dad says its my "gift" and i need to persue it in one way or another... i LOVE to shoot...have a bad day at work, i head to the range with a couple boxes of shells..or grab the bow and fling some arrows. if you feed me ammo i will shoot all day...if my shoulder didnt get sore, id fling arrows all day every day...i just love it... to me, its like the infamous "make hunting your career" posts...i know, first off id need the opprotunity, but if i wanted it, i feel i could make it realistic with time and money weather its firearms of some sort or shooting bow competetions...but if i had the chance, i dont know if id take it...i love it...but i seen WAY to many expert professional shooters burn out and not enjoy what they do...my highschool shop teacher shot pistol and indoor 3 position 22 competition...he was world class...long story short, i got to watch him fire his small bore rifle for the last time ever... so i dont have that decision...i goto 3d shoots for the heck of it...to have fun with the buddies...to practice for hunting...and because i love to shoot.. maybe one day i'll try persuing competetively shooting something...but i dont know..watching my shop teacher QUIT doing what he absolutely loved kinda...opened my eyes...and hes not the only competition shooter i know that quit what he loved...if i quit shooting and hunting what do i have left? take up golf? ;) i really dont know...thats what holds me back.. |
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
Nothing wrong with that Mauser. I'm just at a plce in life that I can afford to have a couple bows and it not tax me too much. I've only competed in <10 3D shoots. I've done everything from finish in the middle of the pack to winning. I will only compete once a month or so in the off-season......+ my local shop shoots. It's kinda like this.....I just wanna know how good I could score if I gave myself every advantage (equipment-wise). So....I ordered a second bow. I won't put anything on that bow that I wouldn't hunt with.

RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
I went the other way Jeff, I set it up for 3D knowing I was going to hunt with it. I set it up with my known to be hunting arrows, sights etc...With the speed restrictions it was easy to get into a great setup for hunting and still shoot some mighty fine 3D scores. The only thing that would be different for me was if I shot open, I then threw on my Tox sight and Boss scope but never tweaked the bow at all.

RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
Jeff if you are getting an Airborne for 3D, why didn't you get the more forgiving 101st?
|
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
Define "more forgiving".
|
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
That is one reason I bought the Guardian. I do a lot of 3d shoots in the summer, mainly just for fun but i would say i got in the top 5 on one of them. I had trouble shooting the Bowtech Mightymite(30" ata) for 3d and i wanted a new hutingbow so i got one that would fit for both. If I had the money i would get two separate bows so it's not as big of a pain switching things over.

RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
ORIGINAL: GMMAT Define "more forgiving". But the 101st has a 7" bh, versus the 6" 82nd. The longer brace height is usually deemed more forgiving. |
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
Exactly. ;)
Rick James saved me some typing: "Because the difference in brace height isn't coming from riser geometry changes. They are on the same riser, and should have VERY similar "forgiveness" characteristics because of this. If the 82nd was a shorter brace because of more reflex in the riserthen you would likely see me wanting a 101st. With that said, more speed with the same shooting characteristics are always a plus in my book." |

What are you doing with your Allegience? |

And, Jeff you havegood enough form and shoot enough, you probably wouldn't see much of a difference anyway. |
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
When Matt/Pa and Rob/PA and Matt (Rick James) are all ordering an 82nd to shoot 3D with......I know enough to not ask too many questions and just follow.
;) I wanted a 3D bow, this year.....and this is the one they told me to get. I've had a GREAT experience with my first Bowtech bow......so the decision was easy. |
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
Well, I've only got one bow, so I do that every year. I make some subtle changes to the set up, but not much. I'm in a good position to take that up on a more serious level, but even being a shop shooter will make that an expensive proposition. But if were to get serious enough about it, I would set up a bow STRICTLY for 3D. Which may end up happening in the not to distant future, we'll see.
|
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
Then you definatly want to come down for the 3D and some Hogs.:D
|
RE: Hunting with your 3D rig??
I tried the 3-D bow thing. It didn't work out well for me I did much better using my hunting set-up. I think sometimes for me anyway I start thinking too much about it and end up tinkering all the time and changing this or changing that. Couldn't stay consistent with a 3-D only rig. I now use only my hunting bow for all my shooting. I just change arrows.
