RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
I persisted in getting in the woods when I knew I was onto a buck I've been after. I saw him on a Friday. I saw him on Saturday. I couldn't hunt him Sunday or Monday.....bu was back in there on Tues. (mixed it up and moved 40 yds). It worked out like a charm.
This is the second year in a row I have taken the largest racked buck that I've "seen" (gamecam and sightings) from my woods......in my second full year hunting. Like I said in the other thread.....ONE of my goals this year was to not loose an arrow I wasn't proud of. I'm good with that, too. I also will most likely achieve my mgmt. goal of removing 8 does from the herd. I have 6....Brknarrow took one....and I have7 more (huntable) days to take one more. |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
Passed on bunch ofsmaller bucks and does this year, took a descent 9 point and a mature doe! After them I let more small ones walk bye...they are fun to watch though!
Took my son (10 yrs old) out a few times this year. Got myself and him up before daylight. After about an hour or so after light he was ready to go, was pretty cold though, we went home. Although I know that it was just about prime time I didn't want himto be uncomfortable. It was hardfor me to leave at those times, but managed[8D].I would Just give him a high five on the way back to the truck and thanked him for getting up and coming out with me......to me, thats what it's really all about! |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
1. took my oldest boy (6.5yr old) out to the stand and let him spot for me, grampa took my youngest out (3yr old) one day... great times...
2. kept my bow out of the woods this season as I was not adequately prepared to take quality shots, this was difficult 3. passed on a younger 6pt basket that looks like it has potential |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
Hunted right at the right time. What I mean is, I hunted funnels, with the right wind, at the right time of year.
I found a new property, one that actually holds mature bucks. I practiced proper scent control, and hunted the winds accordingly. Able to get to and from my stands, undetected. That I know of anyway. |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
Better bow, better shooting accuracy and consistency, better camo, better scent control, better stealth,
better consideration of wind and feeding and bedding areas, more stand locations, more time on stand, but so far other than seeing more deer, nothing to showfor it. I feel like I am a better hunter despite my lack of in the field success. One of these days a big buck will slip up. A lot of the changes I incorporated this year I got from HNI! This place is a good place to learn just by hanging around. |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
Enjoyed myself every second of the season, without complaint.

ORIGINAL: GMMAT This is the second year in a row I have taken the largest racked buck that I've "seen" (gamecam and sightings) from my woods......in my second full year hunting. As for me, the hunting ended up as it should have after I put in the effort (the positive)but I never was able to truly relax when I went out. Too many things going on in my life I guess. I helped my brother get his first deer with a bow, so that was definately the highest point! |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
1. Disciplined myself to stay in the stand longer
2. Passed up deer in years past would have been in the freezer 3. Got my wife involved in bowhunting |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
My point of emphasis was learning to play the wind and try to pattern the deer better. Another thing was actually staying on stand as long as i could. Being 18 years old and all ive got a lot of energy to be used up and sitting on those5-6 hr sits really tests my patience! All in all i didnt do anything this year that i could possibly regret or look back on and think that i could have done differently. I learned more this year that i did in all seasons past put together thats for darn sure! Basically i just enjoyed myself during my time on stand and thats what this great sport is all about!!

RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
I took the wife hunting.
I shot a deer I would have let walk because he was hurt. I enjoyed every minute in the woods. |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
I let those 120 something bucks walk and killed a 142 6/8 buck.
Patience paid off.:) |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
A. <----------------------------------------> I started the year being approximately this awesome. (seegraph A.above) B. <------------------------------------------------------------------> I finished the season being THIS awesome!(see graph B. above) Almost a 50% improvement! |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
I rattled in two mature deer and was able to kill one of them.
next season the goals are kill a mature buck larger or older than the one I got this year and quit getting picked off by mature and savvy does. |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
Took care of all the little things prior to the hunt so I could focus on the hunt itself. Packed my things so I knew how to access everything quietly and efficiently. Did not stress out when things were not going my way early. Didn't see a racked but for nearly a month, then arrowed two bucks in a 12 day period(the only two I have seen all year).
|
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
I rattled in my P@Y buck I shot this year! That was a first for me!
|
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
I was tagged out not even two hours into opening day for shotgun. I had the pleasure of helping everyone else that got one help drag their deer back. I even got to witness someone use a butt plug!

RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
I really paid attention to entry/exit routes more than ever. Whether it mattered or not I have no idea, but I was conscious of it all the time.
Didn't overhunt a stand all season no matter how tempting it was at times. Passed on a couple opportunities at shooter bucks (for me) because I wasnt' 100% sure on them. 90% sure I could have buried them, but it just didnt' feel right so I didn't push the shot. Set my standards for the buck I was looking for and stuck to it. Passed up a lot of bucks that in years past I wouldn't have given a second thought about shooting. The book is still out on whether or not I'm ok with that yet. Didn't crap on my grunt tube this year. Remembered my quiver with my arrows everytime I went out. Didnt' hurt myself. |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
I finally was able to get my son to hunt more, and he really enjoyed it. We could hunt only weekends, since he has since moved. Not sure what we are going to do next year since he will be a non-resident. Hope he applies for a non-resident tag, I'll help pay for the license and permit. Oh heck, I'll pay all of it, its worth it to me.

RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
It took me all season to give up on where the stands were set up - and set up where I thought the deer might come through - but when I finally made the decision to hunt from the ground on an otherwise "hard to hunt" escape route - I was able to tag a great buck that I'd seen during the summe - Sneaking out.
Note to self: make adjustments based on what the deer tell you. FH |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
Farm in the past that has been the hardest thing for me to do.
I always would tell myselfTONY its the honey hole stand and yep I would hunt it and usually get those 1 1/2 yr old bucks or zilch. You have to keep the deer guessing and that is why I am buying the lone wolf tree stand and sticks. They are the lightest out there and I can make these adjustments. Good Luck |
RE: Based on Atlas thread,What did you do positive this year?
Went on an out of state hunting trip with my brother and we both scored on nice bucks and had a great time and saw many things for the first time.
I had 2 goals for this season in NY and they were to pay more attention to the wind and use better routes to and from my stands to avoid giving myself away. I followed both very well. Not sure if they helped or not and don't really care, I'm just glad I stuck with my goals. I put 2 seperate plans together to target specific bucks I had seen on the farms I was hunting. Both plans worked like a charm and 2 excellent bucks for my area hit the ground. I made EVERY shot I took count. I stuck with what I knew was right vs. what I wanted to do more then anything in the world and let a deer lay overnight with a minimally questionable hit..........didn't sleep a wink and it sucked but he needed every minute I gave him to expire. I chase that deer any sooner and I probably lose him. I hunted with my dad as much as he wanted...........and had the pleasure of dragging out a big fat doe he shot. I hunted with great friends and family. Found some great spots I am already excited about for next year. |
