Late season hunting...
I am going to be able to get back out and hit the woods hard starting next thursday, Dec. 13th. I have a stand in the corner of a winter wheat field that I can see alot of deer out of but it might be hard to get any in shooting range. Have another stand in the woods just off the field too. Is it still best to hunt just off the food source in mid-december? Maybe I should use the decoy... :eek:

This lends itself towards hunting the routes connecting bedding areas with food sources. If you know the places the deer are most likely bedding and you know how they access the field, then you are all set. If it were me, I would hunt as close to the bedding area as I could without bumping them out of bed getting to the stand. As always in this sport, it sounds a lot easier than it really is. ;) I do agree with the post above. I have seen deer movement early this late season. I can not explain it, but I have see deer around 2:00 PM on the move. |

I have seen deer movement early this late season. I can not explain it, but I have see deer around 2:00 PM on the move. Now, when is it going to be above 50-degrees again? I don't like my tootsies getting chilly. |

wellif it was me i would wait and track a big storm if it's cold enough to snow in your area. and set up on the edge of a field there is a nice size snow comin in for my area and i counted 56 deer tonight in the field only 2 days after gun season ened!! i would say hunt the fronts and MAYBE look for any late 2nd rut activity. take u'r rattling horns along n if u see a nice buck hit the calls some

My sources tell me that the 2nd wave of the whitetail rut is going to peak on December 10th. Out here, the mule deer rut is in full strut. These bucks tend to be fairly reckless, compared to whitetails. Wish I still had an unfilled tag . . . . .
