I think integrity is integrity and should prevail in a few moments' thoughts.
I personally would never risk my privilages for any size buck. I'd rather take buttons the rest of my life than take a 200 then have it and my privilages taken. |

What is the problem, he gave you permission to hunt the farm. I am confused. So he basically said he leases the property but noone can hunt it?

You know you're not gonna hunt it. It is tempting, very tempting, but you'd be looking over your shoulder the entire time. Plus you would know that its not the right thing to do. If you were that kind of person you wouldn't have posted about it, you would have just did it so no one would know.

i agree with hoytail, you may take an awesome deer but you could lose your privelages to hunt from the state or worse

It is a test I am sure you will pass. It is hard to turn down the farmerwho has given you the permission to hunt this great land. I would hope he understands the position he has asked you to put yourself in and not hold it against you if you opt to do the legal "RIGHT THING"

A 1200 acre farm and the yield is cut from 80 to 40 Bu. per acre because of deer? Are you planning on shooting a couple of hundred? Those numbers don't sound right.

Have the farmer present this argument to the person he leases the land from:
1) The deer are ruining my crops 2) If my crops don't yield profits I will be unable to continue paying you 3) If the crops fail, chances are noone else will want to lease this property 4) If I could have 1-2 hunters take maybe 6-8 deer off this property every year, then my crop yields will increase and I will be able to continue leasing your property 5) Oh yeah, the hunters will hunt with bow and arrow only, and will all come talk to you face to face, they are great guys, ethical and eat whatever they shoot Sound good? shadow |

I figured from your description it was the old American Cyanamid research farm. I used to work there in the summer of '91 as a college intern. That place has been filthy with deer for decades now. You can NOT and will NOT win the battle with the deer there. Just too many. It wouldn't matter if you hunted with a machine gun. Whatever you killed there more would come over the tracks from Mercer Park. A great place to hunt, but you wouldn't put a dent in the population. Back in the day people used to sneek on and hunt, even the employees. There's probably more people hunting it than you know.

A farmer that lets us hunt his property begged me to shoot deer at night for him. His apples were being eaten by the large population of deer. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I didn't think it was right so I just told him to give me a couple of tags and I would see what I could do. He had land management tags that allow night shooting of does only. I didn't want to let him down by saying no so I just took the tags and never filled them. I see no sport or enjoyment of shooting a deer at night with a spotlight.
