What defines a "True hunter"
With a lot of posts lately bashing gun hunters or someone who only hunts one week out of the year, I am wondering what is everyone's definition of a "true hunter" or a "real hunter"?
Why should the weapon matter or how much time you spend in the field? To me ethics, knowledge, and safety are something a true hunter has. And I know several people who only hunt a couple days of the yearand possess all of these and could probably out hunt a lot people on this site. |
RE: What defines a "True hunter"
Sounds to me like you and I are on the same page. Weapons don't matter to me, but all the rest of the things you stated truly define a "true hunter". I agree, and its a shame, that some people do get caught up in a holier than thou attitude...

RE: What defines a "True hunter"
I don't know how much weapon has to do with it, but I guess the amount of success has to play a role at some point. All of those characteristics listed are qualities that good hunters portray, but does that make them good hunters or just good people that hunt? At some point I think we have to ask if a hunter has produced consistently, beit, big bucks, bucks, does, all three. I mean we wouldn't consider a quarter back a great quarter back if he had few touchdown passes or very little passing yards at the end of his carrer would we. (Ex. Bubby Brister.. sorry PA guys!!!)I don't know, maybe Im wrong, but if I am I will be set straight very quickly on here!!

to me the weapon of choice makes no difference... if you make clean kills and respect the land and animals you seek, i'm good with it... imho, its easier to define what is NOT a real hunter... guys that get drunk and go out in the woods, shoot from their trucks, kill animals "just because", etc...

RE: What defines a "True hunter"
with ya 110%....weapon dont matter one bit in my eyes...
its easier for an inexpirienced hunter to simply pick up a rifle and "go hunting" which kinda gives rifle hunters in general a bad name...i still see it here and there with bows, but not too often... aint hard to spot a hunter from a "weekend warrior" as i call them... |
RE: What defines a "True hunter"
Perception is reality. A true hunter is whatever whoever wants to be at any time.
A true hunter could be someone who is actually in the woods or preparing to be in the woods in the morning instead of talking about hunting like we're all doing.:D Oh, GregH says a true hunter doesn't lie yet he's posted that he has a horseshoe stuck in his head all the while everyone knows he himself is a walking horseshoe. Not only that, he's too overly modest about his skill and experience. Is modesty not also a lie of sorts? Now, not only is he a walking horseshoe, he's also a walking contradiction. ;) |

I think you all make good points. I would just like to add teaching and mentoring to the mix since we were all taught at some point by a very knowledgeable people, dad’s grandpa’s, brothers, uncles, close friends. Even moms, aunts, sisters on occasion.
I believe it is our duty to teach the next generation and new hunters what is right and let them decide for them selves what is wrong. Plus we can always learn from one another no matter how long we have been hunting. (IMHO) |
RE: What defines a "True hunter"
Show me a true sportsman that can balance family ALONG WITH his passion for hunting......and I'll show you a true hunter.
My opinion. |

RE: What defines a "True hunter"
some of my thoughts...
There are so many things that make up a hunter and their all different to everyone....thats why we have gun hunting and we have bowhunting...its the passion that draws us to pick up the bow and sit in a tree for hours sometimes the entire day.....or load a gun and walk the woods...stalking their prey.....I think one that is important to me and thay I try and live by is someone who sees the animal as another of Gods amazing creations and treats them as such...nothing goes to waste and respecting the animal in life as well as in death....a little melodramatic but it gets my point across.....most of all though give me someone who leads by example instead of talking about....give me someone who lives to hunt.... |
