Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
My first shot at a deer came when I didn't hunt out of a treestand. A nice doe came walking by, I stepped out from behind a tree, put the pin on her vitals at 10 yards..... shot low and missed! LOL. I also missed the first shot I ever shot at a deer with a 30/30....missed a doe at 30 yards, again shot low...How about you?

My first bow shot on a deer on 01 October, also a doe. Clipped the spine on the way down and she dropped in her tracks.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
Hit. It was a small 4 point. He ran onto the neighbors land and my neighbor shot and dropped him.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
12 years old in 1988. I grazed the back of a spike with my 45 lb Darton MX-30. I was shooting with finger tabs and aluminum arrows at the time. I really don't think I aimed at that deer. I just yanked it back and let it fly. Talk about buck fever LOL!
Then I took a 16 year layoff from bowhunting, so it was almost like starting over from scratch. This time I had a Hoyt Razortec, carbon arrows, a mechanical release and a quality sight with a peep. I still had buck fever, and I competely rushed the shot, but I hit the liver and recovered a small 6 pt. |
RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
Off the ground..he was comng towards me. I centered the pin and shot him in the Jugular. He crashed 20-30 yards spewing blood like a fountain.
I didn't know better. But it worked! |
RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
My second shot was on a nice 7-8 pointer the day before gun season like 7-8 years ago....clean miss right under the boiler room at 20 yards! GOOD god I felt like breaking my bow!
|
RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
my first bow shot was a miss and was followed by two more misses at the same deer........yep.......but two days later....same tree........different outcome, got my first deer ever with my bow and it was a lil 8 point....never forget it!

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
It was 1991, I was dozing off in my stand my release was in my pocket. lol
I woke to see what I thought at the time was a dog coming through the woods. It was a young buck a fork horn to be exact. I got my release nocked and went to draw back. My legs almost gave out and started shaking real bad. Then the arrow fell off my rest and started clanking against the riser. clank, clank, clank the deer stopped and looked right at me. Was probably thinking what is this guy doing. Then the deer bolted off and I released while he was on the run. Shot 6 feet over him thank god. I was really shaken up over the whole thing. Was not sure if I was going to cut it at as a hunter. Glad I stuck it out. |
RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
Missed. Mature doe walked by at about 15 yards. She walked around my treeout of rangefor the next 5 minutes blowing the whole time. I wanted to hang myself from my harness.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
The first time I ever shot at a deer was whenI was walking down an old logging road. I was about half way down it and a little spike stepped out in front of me about 15 yrds. I drawed on it and put the pin on it and shot. I shot to high and it ran off. I have been hunting with a bow for almost two years now and I haven't killed a deer yet.LOL.

He shoots and scores!

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
I missed. I was out with a 45# pearson recurve. I was rather young 14 I think. I was on the ground as well. A nice 8 point buck walked out. I pulled and released with out thinking. I hit the deer in the antlers and made a heck of noise. He shook his head, looked around and trotted off. I learned a major leason that day. Calm down, focuse on form, find a spot on the deer, and aim at that spot. The next deer I hit perfect. A doe broad side at 15 yards. I have not got buck fever like that since.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
My first shot was on a smaller 5x5 whitetail on November 27th. I had to crawl up on him through some CRP grass and I shot at 30 yards and took out both lungs and his heart. He went a couple steps and dropped.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
I shot a little 8 point buck on open morning this year but I hit it low and it got away. I went back in there a few days later to try to kill it but I scared him off when I was walking in. I haven't killed a deer with my bow yet but I am trying and i love to bow hunt.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
My first deer ever was a 80# doe I shot at about 10 yards and killed her that was when I was 13 years old

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
Miss. I fell asleep in my treestand on the edge of a soybean field. Woke up to a doe and fawns below me in the brush. They moved out into the field to eat, then as they came back to the edge and I drew. Shot just over the back of the doe at 20 yds...I didn't follow through. Since that day everytime I see a deer while I have a bow in my hand, the first thought that runs through my mind is to follow through.
BTW my Dad got shot that same doe two days later out of the same stand....he didn't fall asleep. |
RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
Yes sir, not following through has been the enemy of many, myself included.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
It was when I was 13, hunting from the ground, had a buck and two does feeding on acorns right in front of me. The two does go straight and the buck angles right towards me. He is standing about 2-3 yards away crunching acorns and it was over for me by this point. I made the mistake of making direct eye contact with him and to this day I don't which one of us was more startled. Anyway he bails about 20 yards as I draw my bow and he stops broadside looking in my direction. I touch the release and proceed to spear a pine tree directly behind the buck, over his shoulder. This time he leaves for good. So, I missed but one of my most vivid hunting memories to date.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
Miss. It was a real nice buck too.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
My first shot? Sorry, but this will be a long one! Well, it was back when I was 16, and I took my best friend out, who had never hunted before in his life, and had him climb up into the branches of a huge cedar tree right next to my stand. After about an hour on stand, I hear something coming from behind me. Grabbed the old Bear Black Panther, and when I got turned back to my left, he was just going behind a tree, broadside at 15 yards! I drew, and as soon as he cleared the tree he stopped right in a wide open spot. Settled the pin in right behind the shoulder, and let it fly! I watched as the fletchings disappeared right where I had been aiming! He ran about 50 yards, stopped, and started blowing at me then I lost sight of him. Looked back down at the spot of the shot, and there was my arrow, soaked with blood!! I'm pumped, and I think we are both about to fall out of the tree! Got down after waiting as long as we could (maybe 15 mins)and checked out the arrow. Looked good, so we took up the trail. We were only finding a few drops every 10 ft or so, but just knew he was down where we last saw him. Got to there, and couldn't find any more blood, so we backed out, and went home to call a friend that had a dog that could supposedly track deer. Came back a few hours later, and got the dog on the trail. He ran something for about 2 miles, so we figured somehow my shot was bad, and called it quits! We were young, and no one in our family had any bowhunting experience, so we were learning as we went, but now, I really think that I made a good shot, and we just sucked at tracking! Still bothers me to this day to think that I killed one, and never recovered it!

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
P.S. never got a good look at him, happened to fast, but think he was a decent 5-6 pt.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
Absolutley a miss!! Two does at 28 yds way back in 1991. Shooting a Golden Eagle/ Talon Predator. Never came close. I hunted two years before even seeing a deer.
|
RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
Hit and recovered. Twenty paces from my tree. Saw the arrow hit and saw blood, the deer turned around and I saw blood on that side to. Second later he was down. I will never forgetthinking " OMG, Ihad no ideait could be so lethal and so and quick. This is awsome." I was hooked.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
This year first season bowhunting. I had a nice doe come in from about 90 yds. after spotting me (i was on the ground). she took her time but made it in to about 15 yards in front of me and turned perfectly broadside. Set my pin on her vitals but...forgot to stop her from her slow forward walk and I had her estimated around 20 yards so the shot hit high and back essentially in the right backstrap. The deer ran off with my arrow sticking out of her side. I waited 45 min. then started tracking. I spent the bettter part of 8 hours tracking her 250-300 yards found the arrow about halfway up a very modest blood trail. Then the trail dried up. Went back the next day still no further sign of the deer. I was devastated at having wounded an animal and not recovering it. I feel like I learned alot from the experince though.

RE: Your first shot at a deer with bow....hit/miss?
