Richard Batdorf (the bow's designer) has claimed speeds of 428 fps at 3gpp(still within warranty specs).

http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=591885

I squeezed a 369 out of my Iron Mace at 29", 70#, 250 gr arrow (3.7 gpp), with no extra preload on the cams- so it's not entirely impossible. Whether it will ever scare the advertised numbers or not,it definitely looks like a fun toy to play with. They're still in bed with Winner's Choice and Dave Barnsdale, so it looks like they're continuing to use quality components and building on their '07 lineup.

Geez, I remember back in the old days when my bow was fast at 260fps.[&:]

Dibs on Iron mace if you do!

RE: 428 fps? New HCA Speed Force

Probably not...The Mace and I were just starting to get reallycozy with each other when I burned up my last buck tag. Besides, the resale market isn't so greatfor a "gentlyused" bow with quiksilver stickers and sharpie drawings all over it and dried up deer blood crusted into the limb pockets. LOL

I'm dumping all my 2008 hunting dough into as many NR buck tags as possible, and probably 30 tanks of deer-related gasolinenext year. I also destroyed a bunch of gear that needs replaced. No time or money to be fooling with a new bow again.

I wasted wayyy too much of my freetime tinkering with my bow this year. All time that could've been spent in the woods or laying in a field somewhere.

Rybo: if I do come across a good deal on a new one, you definitely have first dibs buddy. I'll even peel off the stickers and wipe off the marker. [8D]

i also shoot a mathews drenalin and i love the way it feels in my hand, it might not be the fastest thing on the market but it is comfortable to shoot. besides unless your bow flies at 1100fps(speed of sound) and deer can duck or jump the string. does anyone remember the first bow to break the 300fps mark and what year it was?

Jimimac 11-30-2007 03:43 AM

RE: 428 fps? New HCA Speed Force

I remember when I bought my first top of the line Hoyt back in the 80's. It would launch arrows at a blistering fast 210 FPS.:)

RE: 428 fps? New HCA Speed Force

Rockpile: as speed increases (getting closer to the speed of sound), a deer's time window to react shrinks. Below is a chart that outlines the time (at various bow speeds)between a deer hearing the sound of your bow going off, and the actual impact of the arrow.

Just so you can actually see how the speed gains will really help you. I thought it was interesting...

fps 100 150 200 250 300 350 400
yds T I M E

10 .27 .17.12 .09 .07 .06.05
20 .54 .34 .24 .18 .14 .11 .09
30 .81 .51 .36 .27 .21 .17 .14
40 1.08 .68 .48 .36 .28 .23 .18
501.35 .85 .60 .45 .35 .28 .23
60 1.62 1.02 .72 .54 .42 .34 .27

Now, I'd argue that a deer can not possibly jump the string on a 250 fps bow at ten yards. That's about 1/10 of a second. If your bow is shooting 400 fps, in that same timeframe, you can ram an arrow through the the target from 20 yards away.

So you ARE gaining something.

Good post Fran!!! These meatheads that won't admit that speed gives you an advantage makes me chuckle every time they post.

How many extra deer has this speed put in your freezer? Just curious.......since I'm a meathead and all. I know I can tell you exactly how many deer a slow 280ish FPS hunting bow has cost me. ;)

I don't shoot a bow that fast. Never have...So it really hasn't put any extra meat in "my" freezer. However, it's an undeniable fact....the less time it takes the arrow to get to it's target, the less time the target has to react. Why is this so hard for people to understand. How can it not be an advantage. Maybe not much of one, but it definitely can't hurt.

I guess the reason for my post is that there are so many other variables out there that have a direct effect on your success in the woods that it's amazing to me people would consider something like this as an "advantage". If you like the speed because it's cool and fun to play with and you like the tinkering aspect and wow factor, then that's cool.......I do as well but I would never fool myself into thinking something like this would give me a measurable advantage over anything else out there when the rubber hits the road. I might justbe a meathead, but not because of my viewpoint on this I don't think.........[8D].

LOL!!! maybe "meathead" wasn't the right choice of words. I better get off this computer, I'm pissin' everyone off today. I do agree Matt, there are definitely many other more important variables that have an effect on our success. However, I just believe that speed does give us just another small advantage. :D
