Value of meat in my freezer??
 

Recently I had some work done on my home. The workers while in my garage must have hit the cord to my freezer. In turn I didnt realize it was off for several day. I lost my 200 pound mule deer, About 200 pounds of elk meat,a wild turkey, 4 abalone,several ducks, about 20 chucker, not to mention all the store bought food. People have told me that my home owners ins. will cover this. But how do you put a price on that meat? If anyone has an idea please let me know.

I don't think the insurance company will give you squat for meat that wasn't purchased.

Most policies have a limit of coverage for this type of loss. It is poss. that you store bought items would be over your limit, if you have one. I would speak to your agent.

personally Id try to get some $$$ out of the company that was to blame before going to your ins company. It may not be worth the deductible, or the increase in your premiums down the line

That's a real drag. We about lost some game meat around 4 or 5 years ago due to the freezer going bad. We would of lost the majority of 1 moose, plus about 50-60 salmon, halibut, and whatever other store bought stuff we had in there. Luckily Sears rushed us up a new one and we didn't lose any meat. We also had some problems with electrical and the circuit kept popping to the freezer. What had happened is we put too much meat in at once and it was running hard and long, and we found out that the washing machine plus some other outlets were on the same breaker.

From that happening to us, and what just happened to you, hopefully people will start checking their freezers daily. Something you don't think you really have to do, but to lose that much meat really sucks!

lonebowman, we go through 100+ salmon, around 100 pounds or more of halibut, a bull moose ~350-500lbs, a few hundred pounds of caribou and whatever else we can fit in the freezer in less than a year.

the butcher I use puts a price on the meat when he packages it, along with a weight

I don't know why he does it because the packages all say &quot;wild game, not for sale&quot;

didn't kill anything this year, so not really sure what dollar amount he uses

Your best bet is price it as beef because they are not going to pay you for your time & hunting expenses

probaly shouldn't even tell them it was deer...just tell them it was beef

i agree with braindamage. i would price it out as beef and you will still be getting ripped off. i would also call the contractors that unplugged the freezer. If they are worth anything they will take care of it for you, if not you can start a neg. add campain for them. word of mouth is the best advertizement there is, and a nice big sign in your front yard along the street would not hurt either.

I'm a Chef and have a restaurant that serves some of the game you lost. Shoot me an email with the exact specs and I'll put together a price list for what I pay for it. Mine's crazy expensive though as it has to go through USDA before I can use, but I could give you a pretty good estimate. Ican tell you right off the bat I pay almost $28/lb for abalone! Elk(T-bones) are $16/lb...pricy. I don't know how much the Insurance will give but it doesn't hurt to try.
