I thought of another tip for those who whiten with peroxide. I stuff cotton balls in the eyesockets and other cracks...then wrap the entire skull in rolls of gauze and pour the peroxide over it. It will soak into the cotton balls and gauze which will keep it close to the bone.
Here are some pics of two skulls I did two years ago.

Another cool idea is to get a painting done on the skull. A wildlife artist here does awesome paintings on skulls. You can take a pic of the spot you killed the animal at and give him the photo, he will paint that scene on the skull for you.

Great post! I wish I would have done this last year with my buck. Right now his whole head (meat, brains, skin, etc) is sitting in a cage out in an old building. Guess I'm waiting for the bugs to clean him out. Could do it this way but it may be a little stinky since its been a year now.

If you got a year to kill, just bury it up to the pedicels in dirt.
Tape the antlers to keep the sun from bleaching them.
Then peroxde soak and paint with Kilz.
Your way is faster and maybe a little more fun though.
Looks nice!

QS, Your mount looks great! After paying 125.00 (each) for my first two mounts, I have done 3 this way and they look great, if not better. I have seen some that were boiled to long and the nose plate seperates down the middle. My first one I did seperated just a little but I dried and glued it while the bone was still a little soft. I tape off the antlers and the teeth before I spray painted.

I have done/still do a lot of these and Burnie's suggestion on the Kilz is spot on. It seals it very nicely, keeping any grease that did not come out of the bone from leaching through. As mentioned, when it dries, it looks just like dried bone.
