How many of you have mounted a deer?

:DOn the wall that is you perves. Ive never mounted a deer and have been hunting for over 25ish years. I was wondering how many of you have had a mount done and what you would consider a mountable deer?

I need to change this a little. I have never had a full mount done. Ive done several Euro mounts myself, but not a full mount. Sorry for the confusion.

Jill and I have 3 at the taxidermist right now, plus others on the wall. What is a mountable deer? To me it would be anything over 130", but to each his own.

i have one, nice eight point. 120ish..... meant alot because he was my first deer ever. If I get this non- typ he will go on the wall too

I have 5 done, one being worked on from this year. 130's is a good start. But it's your money, and your trophy. I like character a bunch more than score when it comes to taxidermy work.

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I've been bowhunting a little over 2 years.....and I have my 8 pointer from last year on the wall (though he's only 106+"....he's a good deer for my woods).......my 2007 bow turkey is at the taxi, right now, about to come "home".......and I just took a buck to the taxi that I've been after since I started bowhunting.....during the '05 season.

Kind of a flurry......but I don't see anything going on the wall for a couple of years. I hope to add a pronghorn in '09.

I have 3. While nothing is set in stone, any additional ones are probably going to need to top 140"

:eek:You never mounted a deer and you're sticking to that story too I bet...LOL Remember, any deer you have the "Deer Gods" smiling down on you and allow you to killis a "Mountable Deer". They are true trophys to you and anyone else who knows how hard it is to take one down, no matter what size it is. But, with that said, I have 0 deer mounts due to the fact that I'm picky. Mine would have to hit the 140-145 class buck or bigger before I mount one. But to each his own you know. I am in fact, going to have mounted, my next Doe I kill however. I have plenty of skull caps, just no mounts. But it's just a matter of time before "The Big Buckeye Daddy" comes thru and gets run over by one of my arrows and broadheads.;)

I don't shoot a buck that I don't plan on mounting. If I want meat I shoot a doe.

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I've got alot of things mounted on the wall besides just deer, mounts are so neat looking if you have the right place and space for these to go. They don't have to be big bucks for me to mount them. For instance i mounted my first deer, it was a doe fawn. I have a total of 9 mounts on my walls and also waiting on a bear and my buck from this year thats at the taxidermist. The mounts I have now are 2 bear rugs, 1 shoulder mount of a bear, 1 bear skin tanned, 2 whitetail shoulder mounts, woodduck, 8.5lb pound walleye and a Canadien Moose that use to be the Minnesota state record for bow and arrow, its now #2 in the state. My dad shot the bull moose back in 1987 and when he moved I bought the house andhe figured he'd leave it here being its a pain to move.

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I have hunted about 50 years of my 66, never had a head mounted, have killed some nice bucks in Wis. for 37 years, moved to Ala. and have killed some nice ones here mainly on the WMA's a 9-point and a 11 point. I just can't see the beauty in a mounted deer head on the wall and justifing the cost to put it there. I have always taken pictures and made a nice CD file that covers most all the years. I would rather go thru those photos and remember each hunt instead of looking at one or two mounted heads on the wall. But that is just me.

once i get mine back from the taxidermist i will have 8 shoulder mounts. I probably wont mount anything under 140"from now on.

I mounted my first buck with a bow...He went 127 5/8 ...I am having this years mounted as he is over 125" and makes our State book...Had to be talked into having him mounted and decided to do so after the Green score...

I got my first mount done in 2006. Its my best whitetail to date. He only scores a little over 100", but I had kind of a history with this buck.

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

got this guy this season...

hes currently at the taxidermist.

biggun? not by any means...heck hes most likely 1.5yo..

but, he was my first ever bowkill...and my biggest buck to date...a animal i will never forget killing and dont wanna forget...hes gunna look dandy on my wall...got him semi-sneak with a left turn, offset shoulder and head lowered just as he looked at me as the arrow connected

sure, chances were pretty fair i may have gotten a shot at a bigger buck THIS season even, but that doesnt matter to me...heck, had a shot at a bigger one opening morning i muffed up before taking the shot...

hopefully man more to come, and many more that dwarf him...but he will always have that special spot on my wall...putting my TV below him, so when im laying in bed next to a girl she thinks im watching TV, not starring at my buck:D

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

The "score" isreally onlyrelevant based on where you hunt. In some states a 130" deer is a rarity, inothers it is not uncommon at all. Depends on the individual rack imho.

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I haven't, and to be honest I wasn't ever going to. Until this year, I've never shot one to even put on the wall, and I just can't see spending that kind of money to do so... But a buddy of mine talked me into it....So I'll have 1 on the wall.

Just European mounts on deer and my reindeer; plaque mount of my moose antlers and rug of my brown bear. The only head mount I have is my boar feral hog but I'm doing a 1/2 body mount when I get my mt. goat.

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I simply can't afford it, or justify the cost. I have never shot anything that impressive either, but even if I did I doubt I would have it mounted with my current finances. I could get a new gun for what that would cost.

This is as close as I get, and it cost more than I wanted to spend. I think next time I will try and do it myself.

I have the racks from all the deer I have shot, and haven't gotten around to mounting them on plaques yet. I think I might work on that this winter. I get laid off in a few days so I will have plenty of time.

Paul

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I have two mounts now, and three more at the taxidermist.

I regret not getting my first buck with a bow mounted. He's just a small 1 1/2 year old, but I still wish I had done it. I'm debating just putting his rack on a plaque with a photo of some sort, or eventually finding a cape and getting him mounted.

What you do with your animals after the harvest is a personal choice. Some people want a lot of mounts, some people couldn't care less about having any mounts. It's really up to you.

Like you Kent I have nothing but euros. I haven't killed anything big enough to justify a taxi. i would mount either of the 2 you killed this year.

I've got several whitetails done but nothing else but a bear rug.. I'd like to have more, but its expensive.. I have a nice 7x7 bull I killed a few years back I would like to have done.. someday I hope to have a few full body critters.. done.. Bear, turkey, whitetail, bobcat, cougar.. etc.. long ways off though... for now its whitetails..

Thanks. I have been blessed this year. All the deer ive shot are blessings. I guess ill need a reason to mount one. A special trip, a loved one shot it, etc..

MOUNTS OR TROPHYS ARE IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER. i KNOW IT SOUNDS CHEEZY BUT THAT IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE. DO NOT LET OTHER S DICTATE WHAT YOU PUT ON THE WALL. YOU HAVCE YOUR REASONS, RIGHT, WRONG , OR INDIFFERENT. SO I SAY MOUNT UP.[8D];)

The 6 I shot this year will be my first. I wasn't going to get it mounted but my Dad looked at me and said you know you will kill many that are larger, but he is a good one and your best as of today. You only live once........

I'm excited to see the mount when it's done. ;)

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I have two. Neither are real big. My first ever buck and my first bow buck. I figured as much as I spent to get into the sport and as much time as I spent these animals deserved to go on the wall. I am guessing neither is over 100" but I am very proud of both of them. I don't know what kind of deer it would take to go on the wall now. But for me, the actual hunt was part of the reason I mounted the first two. Same might could be said for the next one.

I have a 130 class 8 pointer, a caribou, a pronghorn antelope, a bear rug and a wolf rug and a bunch of racks including a moose. Yeah I like to hang stuff on the walls !!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I have done several in a European mount, but never the whole deal at the taxidermist. If I ever get one that makes Pope and Young (my buck from November 8th is going to be close) I will go see the good folks at Timberline Taxidermy in Colorado Springs. Also, my wife doesn't like the eyeballs looking at her. So any mount is going to have to go in the shop or the office.

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I have 3 head mounts and one on the way. I have at least 6 or 7 on plaques that are mountable deer. I mount them depending on symetry, mass, height, length, where I killed them, what the circumstances were etc... Not all deer are mountable to me, however, someone else may have different expectations.

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I have two mounted so far, a 125" 8 pointer andan old twelve with a huge neck-rack wasn't huge but couldnt waste that huge neck, and i have an 160" 11 pointer at the taxi now that i killed this year.

also, off the subject somewhat, i have3lb. 2oz. crappie on the wall as well!

trophy is in the eye of the beholder. i dont shoot a buck unless i plan on mounting him, sights are set a 130or above each year usually, but I more gauge it by "mature" deer more than score.

A mountable deer is one that has made the hunter proud enough to do it regardless of age, sex, or antler size.

That being said, I have a 143" gross (135 net)9pt on the wall with my 270 and will haveanother that was a 120" 10pt before all his brawls with my Vectrix in Feb-Mar when it's done.

Exactly the way I approach hunting nowadays.

I have 7 deer mounted so far and this years buck will make 8. Plus an elk, a pronghorn, 2 turkeys, a bear, a coyote, a few coons, a red fox, a grey fox, a beaver, a pheasant, a goose, a squirel, a wild boar, a bobcat, a mink, and 4 fish. My taxidermist loves me.:)Actually I have mounted a lot of those myself.

RE: How many of you have mounted a deer?

I just took my second deer to the taxidermist to be mounted, and the first was 32 years ago. Mybest answer is: When you see a trophy you'll know it. To me if you have any question on weather it is big enough to shoot---then it isn't big enough.

My first deer went 132 netthe second is 149 1/8 net.(green). When I saw both deer I just new they were going on the wall.;)
