7 yr old, with an atlatl, inside a fence - video

This is amusement that you just can't get anywhere else.

Ethics Police get out your nighsticks!

From what I gather, this was a canned hunt in Lancaster, PA - where a 7 year old equipped with an atlatl walks up to a tamedoe and sticks itfrom about 5 yards away.

I'll give credit where due - heck of a shot for a 7 year old. I wouldn't want that kidlaunching sharp broomhandlesat me, that's for sure.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5070746947608967024&q=atlatl+hunt&total=8& amp;start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&am p;plindex=0

This is maybe more pathetic than thatscumbag from Aftershock Archery and Darton - who had his kid shoot the tame deer under the feeder on video, then was gloating about it afterward.

Atlatls are cool.

I bet killinga deeron 50 acres with an atlatlis harderthan shooting deer at 400 yards with a rifle.Pronghorns over a waterhole. Bears over bait...... ;);)

Would I do it? No. Just because I wouldn't or you wouldn't doesn't necessarily make them stupid.

Ignoring the fenced vs. non-fenced issue, it islikely that some primitive cultures used the same method....

I want to try that some day...think of the challenge!!!! Home-made longbow? ha!

Not on a deer like that tho...others can (hey, somebody has to kill livestock guys) just not for me.

I want that kid to train me properly on how to stalk within 10 yards of deer, that is the amazing part. The method of the kill is questionable as far as my ethics, but I could accept others doing it if that was their desire. I wouldnt do it, but it cant be that much different than my longbow I suppose?

Whats the big deal anyway? I see nothing wrong with what the kid did, that was a heck of a shot or throw or whatever you want to call it! Thats how they did it years ago!

I dont see anything wrong with it. Nice shooting kid. Double lung with a spear, and it sounds like him and his grandpa were enjoying the outdoors together. Whats the problem????

The thing that is appauling is the canned aspect of it.

There are trout ponds where you can take your kid fishing for a fee. Those fish are fed daily and will probably take food rightout ofyour hands. When that food is put on the end of a hook with a kid holding onto a pole, the fish still eat it just the same way. The kid is happy, the dad gets to see his kid happy, and the farmer makes some money.

I don't see anything different or wrong here. It even looks as though they took the time to dress and clean the carcass which suggests they will eat it.

Great shot kid!

RE: 7 yr old, with an atlatl, inside a fence - video

I'm not so much bothered about the choice of weapon. It's pretty obvious the kid has practiced with it and it was very effective. However, that fact that they were "hunting" in an area where you can walk up to a deer with a 6 foot stick and it will be unalarmed until you jam that stick through its lungs. That kid knows how to use a weapon, but not hunt a deer.

Bottom line, canned hunts stink.[:'(]

If you read the site the grandfather states that this "hunt" was for a research project on the killing abilities of an atlatl. So all they were trying to do is kill something with it. And that they did. A tame deer. No better than killing a farm animal and certainly no worse.

Nice shot, kid;)

The motion is different from pitching, but if you have an aptitude for throwing stuff, then you would pick it up quickly. I don't throw any more because of an injury, but when I did, I could hit a pie plate from about 30 yards. A man-sized target could be hit from much further away. The darts are much heavier than an arrow and what they lack in speed, they make up for in energy. Mine was made by BPS Engineering in Montana. Google it, they have a cool website.

BTW - if you have ever had rotator cuff problem, never pick one up.

I admit they are kinda neat. But the way they werehunting deer withthem is stupid. In a fence, with tame deer, yeah that's difficult! I can't believe it was possible!!! Whatever.

The difference....when I walk up to a hog and pop it behind the ear with .22 I dont brag about my hunting prowess or what an amazing shot I just made. Its not insecurity, its reality.

A whitetail deer, in a 50 acre enclosure, VS a 7 year old boy with a big spear.

That's as close to "fair chase" as a canned hunt can be.

How many fps was the atlatl moving at?

How many grains would something like that weigh?

What kind of KE do you think that would have? Obviously, momentum kills, not just speed. He passed through both lungs. That part is pretty cool IMO.

But why would someone care that someone brags about hunting prowess? I think most on here are very insecure. Hunting is a personal thing where a person should be worrying about thier gear, thier shot, thier animal. Its not a competition lub. And people making it one, has really lost the spirit of hunting as people in high fences.

People care because itsposted all over a public forum about hunting. This is a place to share your hunt, your equipment and your knowledge. Most of us will adamantly defend anything we believe in, or dont believe in. Youre right about it not being a competition and any game animal taken fairly will gain much praise on these forums. Theres something to be said about going into an animals habitat and coming out on top. Canned hunting is like getting a hooker, theres no thrill of the chase and the trophy youre left with is less than pleasant.

If youre a liar or do something less than sportsmanlike, youd better have a flame suit on.

In other words, if your secure in yourself, and your abilities, and look for your own thrill in your own hunts, it doesn't matter what a 7 year old with a spear is doing or some rich VP shooting a 180" buck.

I have seen it all on these forums. People want to push thier own ideals on others, cause it validates thier own, and if other do not agree, they feel insecure. Its really that simple.

I don't like high fense hunting, so I don't do it, I don't like baiting, so I don't do it, I sure don't like deer drives, so I don't do it. But others get pleasure from all these practicses. It works for them. Its like trout stocking. Same thing, I do it, I have no shame. Preserve quail hunting. I do it, and no shame in it.

I am just not so ready to jump on the "banning", this or that bandwagon. I love living in a country where I can be a slob hunter killing an animal in an enclosed fense and then taking pictures of it like I really hunted it.

You can't look for praise off an internet forum to drive your life.

i havent watched the video...

the boy is seven years old...and harvested a deer with a weapon that not many people know much about, let alone use to kill deer.

the way i see it if they were going to harvest the deer for meat anyway whats the difference.Hes 7 years old and got the job done.

maybee in a few years he will be hunting out of a stand in fair chase conditions with it....then i guess you would all be amazed at it.
What season would he hunt during...atlatl's probably are not legal to hunt with???

he wasnt hunting he was harvesting and thatsthe difference...

i just watched the video

and....i dont find it offensive at all. whats offensive is people looking down on a little kid...im sure when hes old enough, he will hunt fair chase just like the rest of us...i thought it was neat how they showed the Carcass and the damage that the weapon is capable of, even in the hands of a seven year old....

they werent bragging about a great hunt or anything they were just showing what an atlatle will do. yes the kid was excited and he has every right to be...

the way i see it is he had to find a deer that was dumb enuf to stand infront of him...i do the same thing when im in my tree stand or stalking thick brush even tho mine arent fenced.

i dont agree with grown men hunting fenced areas and taping it for there tv show sponsors to sell the newest equipment....but ifthey want to do itoh well...but this was a kid and they werent bragging up how good of a hunter he is...or trying to sell hunting equipment.
