Concrete deer decoy?
I got this in an email:
Aparently the guy was at his grandmothers and saw this buck in the back yard fighting the concrete deer.So he ran and got his bow and shot from 60 yards and hit it in the leg.The buck turned the concrete deer on top of his antlers and got stuck.Shot the buck 3 more times to finish him off. What a lucky dude and what an incredible buck! ![]() . ![]() ![]() |

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Hey thanks for posting this this is one of my good friends at my high school and he couldnt get me the pictures to put on here yet.

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Great. Now I'm going to have to haul a concrete decoy into the woods. As if hunting wasn't enough work already..... [:@]

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
An awesome looking buck.
When I had a 3D target set up in my yard, we would often see deer coming up and trying to see what it was. One awesome looking double drop 10 pointer was standing about 40 yards off my front porch. |

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Is that hunting? Would you be proud of it?
Great buck though. |
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
You mean to tell me if you had a very desireable deer in your back yard you wouldnt kill it. That is my dream deer a 10 or 12 with two drop tines.

I woulda smoked him! 1) It was early September so season was not in. 2) I can't really say that is hunting, I don't know though, I often hunt the trails leading to the fields that I can see from my house, and it's the same deer. It all just depends on your morals and your thoughts of the fine line of hunting and "shooting". Chances are if it had been in season, sneaking out of the house and shooting him would be very unlikely. The deer run off everytime someone opens a door, or a dog barks. I know where they most likely would go from the field, so I could of set up on the main trail and to me I could of shot him with a feeling of actually hunted him. |
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Brings whole new meaning to bragging to your friends about your "rock solid" decoy set up

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
To me it would be like shooting a monster buck that I saw from the road and got out off the hi way (all legal) and simply killed it............It would not be like hunting to me in the least, however that is my feeling, if the kid that shot that buck is happy with the way he did it and was totally legal I say CONGRATS!

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Maybe a moat lined with spears around the ornament.

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
i would probably shoot the deer maybe mount it (probably just do a skull mount) but i just wouldnt feel super great about it esp since he had to put so many arrows in it. as long as he tells it like it is and doesnt thing that because he killed a monster hes the best out there (i hate guys like that) then congrats. that thing is huge.

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
I'm not sure what to think. I probably would have grabbed the camcorder and got the whole deal on video.

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
ORIGINAL: Rob/PA Bowyer Is that hunting? Would you be proud of it? Great buck though. is it any different than the situation where...say you get out of your truck to go hunting. as you are getting ready a buck starts making his way by you within range. you have to decide whether to shoot him or not. if you choose to, is that hunting? im not quite sure i understand that story either....i would be proud of killing a big buck like that, but not if it was actually stuck to the concrete decoration where it couldnt get away, that deer is literally tied down for him to shoot. that is despicable. |
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Geez... it is a great buck but the story about makes you want to puke!! [:'(] It has nothing to do with shooting a deer in his back yard. He took a crap shot to start with and finished with2 more that are no where near the lungs. Thank Gawd the concrete deer pinned it for him. He never would have killed it. Yep I would be proud of that!! What a joke!! [&:]

I will probably never see a buck like that in 5 lifetimes.

Wow! What a monster!

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
What an idiot and what a sad "hunting" tale ~ is my opinion.

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Well......it gets one to thinking, huh?
First thing I'd wonder is...."where'd he come from"? How can I get set up on this buck? I have deer in my yard from time to time....and I've actually fed them, there. It's off limits to hunting, though. BUT.....I hunt the 24 acres of woods on either side of my 3 acres.....so....I WOULD be wondering how I was gonna set up on this guy. I sat a stand not 50 yds off my driveway, once......and hunted it one time. It was a place I could get in before work and "maybe" see a deer. never happened....and that's fine. I don't live in the city. My "neighbors" are (around me) on 24 acres, 24 acres, 17 acres and 15 acres. And for the record.....I shot at my buck I took last Tuesday FOUR times, hitting him 3 times. I'm not ashamed of that in the least. |

And I'm sure your deer wasn't pinned to the ground. Apples and oranges. I've had to shoot a couple deer more than once (and I shot 4 arrows at a doe last year, completely missing with arrows 2 and 3; high-winds and a skinny tree), but none of my shots were 60-yards away, nor at an incapacitated animal, as I'm sure was your case too. I just hope this isn't mistaken for a 'typical' bowhunter. |
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
If the deer could get away and I took a shotI would be comfortable with, then by all means I would be very proud to show off that deer. That is like sayingI was walking to my stand, getting ready to hunt andI shot this deer, would you guys not be proud of the deer, since you weren't technically hunting.

No freaking way...!

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Somehow I missed the part where the buck got stuck under the concrete deer.[8D]
|
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
(((IMO)))
This is really sad. I would not have taken the shot. If the deer was that comfortable to come out into their yard in day light hours then obvisouly he wasn't that pressured. I would have done some quick scouting and set up a stand inside the woods. Then I would rattled and grunted him in. It still wouldn't have been as meaningful if i were deep inside the woods but it would have still been better than shooting the deer at 60yds and having it trapped by the deer. |
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
if the deer was fighting the decoy that wouldve been one thing. but it was stuck to it. i mean. if this guy had to take 4 shots to kill this deer, how many have gotten off in the woods wounded? i dont like it one bit. i wouldnt want to be seen with it.
|
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
He had to shoot a captive deer four times? Out of season? That is no more than torture and he should be ashamed. Seems if he can't kill a trapped deer in a more humane way he needs to find another hobby.
Couple of questions, did he put on all that camo so he could look like a big time hunter or does he dress like that all the time? And why do folks run up and lay their gun or bow on a deer? Looks like a lot of posing to me. Absolutely nothing to be proud of. This is the kind of stuff that gives "hunters" a bad name. |
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Man thatbuck lookslike General Custer did after he ran thru the middle of the Soiux camp at Little Big Horn with all those arrows!!! Not my preffered method of hunting, butat least he was aMAN about how he took it.I cannot lie, seeing that hog would make at least tell myself, NO NO NO< dont even think about it.
I know a guy that killed a big buck that was hung up in a barbed wire fence and stillboasts to guys around here about it, I bite my tongue every time hear himleave outthat part out about shooting his local legendary big buck. |
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Idk, i would love to shoot that buck but not under the circumstances. It just wouldnt have the same meaning to me as a buck that I scouted and hunted. I know some people that have killed some deer in situations like this but the fact is that its not hunting at all, just shooting.

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
He shot this out of season? I never read that. I read another post where it said he was coming home from hunting and the deer was in his yard messing with with the concrete deer so he shot it.
I was going to say I would have shot it without a thought. I don't care if it's in the woods or in my back yard ( I have hunted my back yard before), if it's legal I wouldn't feel bad about it. I commented on the other thread about it being sad that he took that shot at that distance and shot it in the leg, then took another 3 to finish it off[:o][:'(]. But if it was out of season![:@] No way would I do that, that is what I own a camera for. If it was in season though it wouldn't bother me that I shot it in my back yard. I don't know how to break it to some of you guys but most of the state records and really large bucks I have seen shot were not by people that were hardcore and singled out a particular buck and hunted it down and shot it. Most are by your average guy or girl that is in the right spot at the right time and just got lucky. Hard medicine to take, but that seems to be how it works. I certainly wouldn't expect them to not be proud of it. Paul |
RE: Concrete deer decoy?
Look at all the bare earth surrounding the area where he was stuck. I just don't buy the story that he shot it , then it suddenly got "stuck" after just getting shot, then he shot it some more. A buck doesn't "fight" a doe decoy, he tries to mount it or scoops it in the side trying to manuvere it into position. Looks like the buck was already stuck for some time and struggling and someone called him to come and shoot it. Depending on how long the deer had been like this and whether or not it was stressed or had broken its back as they often do when thrashing around trying to get loose, it may have been the only option to dispatch the deer. In any case, this is one of those situations I would have kept under my hat.

RE: Concrete deer decoy?
I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but I don't think it even happened and I'm pretty sure CSI could tear this one apart.
