RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

To put it in perspective besides Jeff how many guys posted about hitting does and not finding them? Matt's thread went how many pages?Greg's post had more hits then any other ten threads because they were looking for......................................Bucks!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

Some of us just don't hunt does.No reason to,and no reason to do it for a buck contest.;)

Fair enough huntingson.....but his adversity to it just materialized. When we talked about it back a few months ago....he was all up for putting it to a vote.

I don't care one way or another....I just wanted to know a valid reason why it shouldn't be discussed. If Rob says he don't wanna fool with it....that's good enough for me.;)

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

Jesus Christ, Jim.....you HAVE to keep bringing that up? I've been hunting three years....killed 13 deer.....and I have ONE "unknown" out there. ONE deer I don't know whether it died or lived. I'm not proud of that.....but it also isn't like I'm a slob or anything.

Gve it a rest.

Also.....how many among us do you REALLY think have hit BUCKS and not found them....and kept their mouths shut about it?????

I'm done. I'll enter either way....and be a happy hunter.

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

As usual you missed the point, you were the only one with balls enough to post about a bad hit on a doe.The rest chose to keep it to them selves to avoid the criticism. And I see no reason to give them any other reason to take unwarranted shots.

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

Look at the activity level on some of the teams now. Just about zero on some of them with some members not having posted anything in months.
Maybe some of the newbies/rookies would have more interest if they could at least show off their doe.

Even though the teams are picked at random it does not take long to see what teams are made up of active hard hitting hunters while others consist of guys waiting to shoot their first deer whether it be a buck or a doe.

The contest is just for a cheap Yuk Yuk and I think it would keep more teams active longer.

Ps.. Not my contest and I don't have to do all the work involved in running it which I am sure takes alot of time.. Hats off to you Rob..

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong....and I'll do so RIGHT NOW.

I JUST remembered why I had a change of heart about this months ago. "I" think if we add does....it would take away from the intent of the contest (although it's called a bowhunting contest)....which was "bucks". NOW I remember......"I" don't want guys and gals entering the contest thinking they can "contribute" by ONLY shooting a doe. And...we WOULD have a lot more people enter.....and not give hunting a BUCK their FULL priority.

Sorry....I forgot why I changed my mind.....but I don't like it.

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

This rule change (whether it ever materializes or not) would be the ONLY part of the contest that was 100% "fair". A doe from any part of the country would count the same. Common sense tells us that it isn't that way with bucks.
I disagree here. It would be just as "unfair" as the buck situation. Shooting a doe in Idaho(or other states where you get one either sex tag) can't nearly be as "equal" as shooting one in a state with unlimited doe tags.

I like the contest the way it is. It's enough time for Rob to run it as it is. If it ain't broke.....

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

+1 for the "if it aint broke" approach. No sense turning a fun buck contest into a silly doe derby.

bawanajim 11-15-2007 07:43 AM

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

Ok I'm changing my mind also.I think does should count also same as bucks. And to make it more fair to all I think all bucks should be scored as equals just like the doe's.
It is after all a bowhunting contest not a big buck contest. Why should Hunsuckers,or Greg's monster bucks count as any better than Mauser's PA buck.;)

Yep lets count them all the same, it would make Robs job easier.:)

Thats EXACTLY the way the Mathews board's contest runs, Bawana.....so it isn't far-fetched". They count scoreable points + 5 for a buck......and 5 for a doe.

Careful what you stir up....;)

Planter 11-15-2007 07:54 AM

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

Its funny that forks and fawns seem to like the idea and lifers and Non-Typicals do not.
There are those who need to cull does from their land and those who just hope to get a shot on one.

Leave it the way it is. If you want to have a contest to include doe then do just that have a doe contestyou can go by wght or what ever.Like others have said I dont have a doe issue and as of now am not taking any.I dont like the idea that someone would shot a bunch of does to to get points in a contest and you know that would happen.BUT THATS ME:D

I like the idea, but I understand the old timers (on the forum, that is) not wanting change. I think a separate "nanny whacker" contest may be the answer. Just my opinion.

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

Im pretty new around here and i dont want to "stir the pot" in any way, but i have a few thoughts that might be valid. Its fair to say that Rob who runs the contest does a lot of work and everyone debating this topic should recognize that fact and maybe rethink how they are arguing there point of view. Unless everyone is willing to step up and run the contest yourself, i would make your vote, state your opinion on the matter and cut bait. Lastly, i really enjoy coming on here to talk about hunting, lets not make it another place to argue. Im all for adding doesto the competition because where i live it is incredibly difficult to bring down a buck of that magnitude, i have a hard enough time seeing deer, nevermind being choosy with racks, i wish i could, but thats not the reality of it. Id love to get in on the contest but i could never hope to make a bigbuck contribution to my team. My .2 cents.

gplant 11-15-2007 08:36 AM

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

Striketrue,Its not a BIG BUCK contest its just teams having fun showing off thier bucks and smack talkin and stuff like that. Not all those bucks are big bucks such as mine. But we all seem to be happy with what we got.Thats the problem with this contest is I dont think everyone is showing what they got because they dont feel it stacks up and thats not right.IMO

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

My basic point was that not everyone has the oppurunity to kill a SINGLE buck all season, and its unfortunate that guys like myself cant participate. However, i respect what you guys have going and its not my place to force change. Once again, my 0.2 cents

Planter 11-15-2007 08:59 AM

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

I do think the whole idea is just to have fun but asgplant suggested maybe people are not entering their deer in the contest because they do not measure up to their own standards as expressed on the forum.

The bar has been set high which is great butmake sure you set your own standards as well. When I hear guys saying they are waiting on their first buck and are passing 120 class deer then something is not quite right. If this silly little contest has ANY impact on the way you hunt then your priorities are out of whack..

Do you not get a buck tag for anywhere in this country? If you can legally kill a buck, then you can certainly participate. I don't understand why everyone has blown this into a big bucks contest and feel that "thier" buck won't be enough to contribute.

I also find it funny that often times the "big buck" guys on teams aren't typically the ones who contribute the most due to the difficulty of killing a mature deer every season. Some guys do, but a lot don't. It's a double edged sword.

I voted yes. There's a good chance I won't shoot a buck this year but I already have one doe down and passed on several others. I'd like to be able to contribute to my team's score without feeling the need to shoot the first little buck that comes my way when the season is drawing to a close.

Why would you feel you had to that??? You hunted you didnt see the one you wanted ,end of story. Your contribution to your team was being out there and giving it your all.And that should be good enough!!!

Oh dont worry, i have a buck tag in my pocket. Im saying that having the oppurunity while hunting to shoot a buck is another story. Sorry for the confusion, oh and "this" country isnt my country, im in Canada.

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

Would this not be a disadvantage to the people that do not want to shoot more than one deer?

Not everyone is feeding an entire family with venison.

Perhaps only one deer should be aloud per contestant whether it is a doe or buck?

Planter 11-15-2007 12:22 PM

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

Maybe thats not a bad idea cooter. It would let guys that do not score on a buck in the season to enter a doe. As long as the first deer down rule wasn't in effect it might let guys with limited opportunities at a good buck still pass on young bucks for next year and still contribute to their team. It might be a good ideal to set.

I live in a state where only 3500 deer were taken by archers in our best season. Boils down to slim pickins for some. Not so bad for others.

That may work as long as we enter our FIRST DEER KILLED then I could go for that.

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

This thread just makes me beat my head against the wall. Its a FOR FUN contest with RANDOM pickings of teams that are more to get people to meet each other than to actually win the dang thing, and all these people are worried cause they don't live in a "big buck" state and can't contribute to the team......un-real.

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

This isn't some kind of affirmative action for doe slayers, you pansies. Get off your hobby horses and get out there and shoot a buck and stop crying.

Man-Up, Doggy.

Maybe next year, in addition to scoring does, we'll just give everyone 25 points for playing, just so they get to feel included and "loved." If you're a really sorry excuse for a hunter, with absolutely no chance of scoring a buck, you'll get 50.

Beat me to it, why doesn't someone just put together a seperate "doe" contest in ADDITION to the "bowhunting contest", seems logical.

RE: Why is this? Bowhunting Contest Question?

Man, my memory must be getting fuzzy in my old age, but I thought we did enact this rule last year for the contest. It seemed we could each take a doe for additional points. Maybe we just discussed it and it was axed. I don't have a problem with it. Since it is supposed to be for "fun" and it is a "Bowhunting" contest, not a "buck" contest, but I don't care either way.
