How often do you replace your cables on your climber?

I was wondering how often you change your cables on your climbers. I have had my summit stand for 8+ years and have never changed my cables. That being said I am planning on changing them after the season or if i get them for christmas. I know 8 years is prolly too long, but they didnt have any wear on them other than shrink tubing. How long do you guys go before changing them?

I've had my summit 3 years now, and the cables are perfectly fine. I am, however, going to get new shrink tubing for them.

The frequency depends on the use, and abuse. Having said that....when in doubt, buy new ones.

why would you question the worth of your cables. Im guessing something has happened.

No nothin has happened but you are supposed to change your cables every so often and mine are the original 8 year old cables. Trust me my Summit is built like a rock.

I think they were 3 years old. The reason I replace them was the heat shrink coating was pretty tore up but the cables were fine.

I havent changed mine either I just replace the wrap when it gets cracked and busted up. I work for a electrical dist and can get the heat shrink tubing, works real good better then the oringinal..

So do you think I should get the new ones for like $35 or just buy some shrink wrap tubing?

At 8 years old I'd say spring for the cables. 35 bucks is a drop in the bucket compared to a stay in the hospital.

well look the chain over especially the pins that hold the links together. if not that bad just get the wrap. I might replace mine just to be on the safe side after this yr. I use the api grandslam bowhunter. you said 8 yrs thats a long time. if you feel unsafe id replace. cant replace your back or life if you fall.. good luck

It's a summit so it doesnt have the chain with the links, but i guess replacing it is the best. I mean $35 isnt that bad compared to falling and injurying myself...even tho i use my harness.

I use a Predator from 1998 that didn't have cables. But it did just recently have seat or material rot. Check them too if you are replacing.

Thanks...I just bought a new seat and man is it comfortable...maybe too comfortable. I tend to sleep in it more now.

I would just cut off the old shrink wrapping and check the integrity of the cable. I mean...its steel, right? Should be good.

Let me suggest one thing if you decide to replace the shrink wrap. Buy a propane torch from Lowes or Walmart to heat the tubing. I first tried using a hair dryer and it looked like it was going to take 22 years. Bought the torch and got it done in minutes.

I replace the cables on my climbers every 3 years, ratchet straps on my hang ons every season. I keep the ratchet straps for securing things in my truck bed, so it works out great.
