Super deer. Strongest deer ive ever seen

I went out Sun. after noon. At about 5:00 I arrow a big doe. It was an easy 20 yard broadside shot. The shot was perfect. The doe jumps, walks 5 steps and lays down in front of me. I watch and think I’m about to go get her when all of the sudden she picks her head up and just sets there. I can see blood everywhere and think, it won’t be long. I set and watched her for an hour. I couldn’t put another arrow in her because of the brush between us. Eventually a group of hogs come down the trail she was on. She jumps up and plays standoff with the hogs. Eventually the hogs just back track and leave. The doe then starts to walk away. I watch and take note where she went. Once she is out of sight, I move out of the area. As she walked away, I could see she was still bleeding, and I could see the entrance and exit wound which confirmed it was a perfect hit. Since she walked off with no problem, I decide to go get her the next morning. First thing Monday morning, I go to retrieve her. I find her laying just where I thought she would be. When I get about 10 yards from her, she jumps up and bolts. I watch in disbelief as she sprints away like a champ. I take note where she went, so after work I might find her. After work, I go back out and find her about 500 yards away from where she was when I jumped her. I gut her and check out my shot to confirm the damage, and it was a perfect shot. Both lungs were taken out and the arrow had passed right through the center of the heart. I’m still in awe. No problem with the broad head, it was a new muzzy three blade. It sliced right through her and caused lots of damage. Out of 25+ year of hunting, I’ve never seen this before. It is unreal. I’m glad I recovered her, but am still amazed at how long she lived after having major damage to her vitals. Has anyone else seen this before. I felt like calling Ripley’s believe it or not.

Great story! This is yet another huge reason why I consider it a great honor to hunt these creatures!

I had almost the same expirence, shot a big old doe with shotgun right through the shoulder and took out one lung. This was the last day of season so i had to wait until i could borrow a muzzleloader to finally dispatch her. I waited nearly two days and every time i went to see if she had died i just kept jumping her. I was in awe how far she ran and how long she lived.

That's crazy man. Not that it really affects anything, but did you happen to weigh her? I didn't know nerves could last that long. Congrats on making a great shot too!

My father and I had almost identical shots on does this year, liver and offside lung. My dads we finished the next morning, mine was dead after a 100 yards sprint.

After this I am convinced that if a deer bolts and the blood gets flowing, they will expire very quickly but if they dont react and just lay down or whatever, they can last a very long time.

Amazingstory... she must have had some kind of defect or something that allowed her to live on a small amount of oxygen, or her blood clotted more than mostdeer. These deer are way stronger than most people know... I had a buddy take a running shot at a nice 8 point a few years ago.. he said he hit it in the chest, it did a complete flip and laid there for a minute. As he walked up, it took off (left a blood trail spray the whole way) They followed it for 2 miles until it got into a neighbors woods that didn't allow hunting and would not let them retreive it. He was sick over the whole deal, as you can imagine. 3 weeks later during muzzleloader a different neighbor shot a really nice 8 point (netted 149) out of the area where the buck was last seen and noticed it had 2 spots with no hair. (just above the lungs, below the spine, between the ribs) One spot was small (size of a nickel) the othe side was almost as large as a billiard ball.In less than a month both the entrance hole and exit holes were sealed closed, but there was no hair over the wounds. I called my buddy and asked him if "his" buck from shotgun week was running from his left to his right when he shot? He answeed "how did you know that?" I informed him his buck was hanging in front of me in my neighbors barn! Unbelievable.

That is nuts! My older brother once had a spike bed for 20 minutes before he died w/ an arrow hole through the center of the heart the whole while, but that is nothing compared to your senario! I am glad you found her.

All I can say is you NEVER EVER know FOR SURE what will happen....EVER.

WOW!!! how do you live with a hole in your heart and on top of that both lungs ... not being able to breath...thats freakin amazing man! All the deer i ever double lunged only went 50 yards. I always thought if you hit them in both lungs they got about 4 seconds of air then they are done?
Are you sure she was real?[:-]

What are you feeding them critters out there? Last year you had super hog run off with a hole in his heart. I can't wait to poke a hole in one of them tough guys!

I think the blood cloted and pluged the hole, since she was relaxed the whole time. I can only assume. She was an older doe that was about 150lbs. Guessing.

That guy was on the Brazos on public land about a mile from my house. Ive had hogs do crazy things quite a bit, but never a deer.

I didnt take pics of the deer because I had to quarter her on the spot to get her in a cooler. It was 82 degrees out side. I did keep the heart and will post a pick of it when i get home. But believe me, it was as perfect of a shot as you can get. This is not my first deer.

You would think that the internal bleeding would then colapse the lungs. Those buggers are tough, no doubt.

Dont worry, ive taken outa buck already. I get three tags, 2 doe and 1 buck. Ill take them all. If I get to godown south, ill get to tag another buck. Ill probably head south as soon as my buddy gets off work. He is the only one I know with land in the Hill Country.

I caught the meaning, no worries.;) I have not got after the hogs yet, but ive taken out three. Ate one at a campout. Pit roasted it. The second got cured and given to a friend, and the last will be eaten at another campout. Ive cured the hams, back strap, and loin and will smoke them Sat. Emmmmmm.

I hit a doe a few days back, hit rib #6 and angled back (she jumped the string towards me) through one lung, liver, guts, and out the ham

5 hours later, still alive, a second arrow finished it.

compare that to my buddy, who hit a doe, angled away, broadhead sliced on the OUTSIDE of the rib cage, down into the leg, severing an artery and she bled out in about 300 yards in a few minutes

I dn't want to be the bad guy here, but with a hole through the heart, I don't care how strong the deer is, she's not gonna live that long, relaxed or not.

Amazing story. I totally believe you. With deer, as with most of life, you don't rule anything out, don't take anything for granted.

My brother shot a big doe with his 30-06 a couple years ago. 40 yard shot, broadside or quartering, definitely a solid hit, the deer spun and staggered, stood with legs splayed and head lowered. He then hit her again, this time quartering away, she bolted about 40 yards and went down. He waited about 15 minutes to approach the deer, it was mid afternoon and there was no rush. It got up and bolted away. I showed up a half hour later, we trailed it and jumped it again, had to shoot it again.

I want to believe you but it sounds pretty unbelieveable. Are you certain you didn't tear the heart or cut it with you knife while gutting it?

Seems like if you caught any part of the heart she couldn't have lived that long.

Maybe she had a reason to live.

When my dad was in his 20's when he put four 12 gauge slugs into a buck that was in full rut. The thing just kept going after the first, second, and third shots. All the shots were in the chest, the forth one went right through the shoulder, keeping him from going any further. My dad still has all four slugs that he dug out of the ribs and shoulders. It amazes me what this animals are capable off.

I've never heard anything like that before. I could see maybe the arrow creating a seal in the lungs allowing the deer to live longer, but if the heart was damaged that deer should have been dead.

Amazing.

Crazy,

Reminds me of stories of the guy the cops shoot 18 times and he still keeps coming or similar war stories.

I'm thinking along the lines of self-sealing - was it a pass-through or was the arrow in the deer?

Maybe the deer had a super dose of coagulant.

RE: Super deer. Strongest deer ive ever seen

Here's a quote from an article by Russel Thornberry:
"Hunters are often mystified by the distance their game travels after being hit with a lethally placed arrow. The sharpness factor plays a big role here. I have seen white-tailed deer survive center lung shots, and in one case, even a center heart shot, because the broadheads used weren’t shaving sharp. You may think that I’m assuming that those heart- and lung-shot deer survived, but I’m not. In the case of the center lung-shot animal, it was killed by an automobile two years after it was shot through the lungs with a dull broadhead. The broadhead and 10 inches of the shaft were still in the buck, positioned right in the center of his lungs. His wound had healed completely, and he seemed to be in otherwise perfect health when the car hit and killed him. He was butterball fat, too. The heart-shot doe was shot later by a rifle hunter, also two years after an arrow passed through the center of her heart. She too was healthy and fat, showing no evidence of ills due to the 6-inch section of aluminum shaft still in the center of her heart. In both cases, dull broadheads failed to do their jobs. There was minimal hemorrhaging, and both animals survived. Shot placement is critical in bowhunting, but unless your broadhead is shaving sharp, a perfectly placed arrow may not get the job done."
The article is available through the buckmasters web site, and every bowhunter on the planet should read it. I am not accusing Burnie of using a dull broadhead, but maybe the style of broadhead was a factor here. I also make this post to give readers an idea of what a whitetail is capable of. Is it possible that Burnie's arrow carried some material such as fat or hair into the wound channel, partially sealing the plumbing leaks?

I`ve been hunting a long time and never heard anything like that!

seen shots that i thought would put them down quick only to find them much futher than what i thought? But an arrow going through both lungs and the hart? And she still made it through the night! WOW!

I have seen it in person. I shot a buck with a thunder head back in the early 80s. A shot as you mention Bernie. He lived not one day, but two days. I jumped him twice. My oldest son finished him off with a rifle. It sounded just like what you mentioned. Layed up over night. I jumped it the next morning. Came back that afternoon, jumped him agian. Finally, my son was out with his 270 and shot the buck. When we cleaned it, the heart had a arrow thought it, but had a plug of blood cloggin the hole. One lung had folded, and only the bottom of the other lung was messed up. The bullet blew through both shoulders and finally droped him.

Your story is only the second time ive ever heard of this. And ive been hunting for over 50+ years.

I have also seen men with holes through them live for days before the medics could get them to the M.A.S.H.

Took a "Wounded Warrior" out fishing this summer that had been shot by a sniper in Iraq... clean through the head!! He wasn't 100% but he was fully functional and able to talk at what I'd consider 90%. If you didn't see the scars you wouldn't believe it. Amazing!!

hold on?? double lung..and center punched the heart?? wow..im not going to talk you
down on that, but that is almost impossible to double lung and center punch an animal
and it live....impossible. im sorry. with a broadhead through the heart...no oxygen because
lungs are punched through too no animal will survive..30sec...at most..i think u hit one lung
