Would you tag a pals doe???
I know the legal answer to this question so that may well be the ethical answer as well.
You set your pal up in a stand a few hundred yards away from yours and you have 5 doe tags and he has none. You tell him if he whacks a doe you would be happy to throw a tag on it for him. You can have two deer down at the same time here so that would not be an issue. They give out the tags to reduce the population of does so whats the big deal in the real world??? |
RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
Yes. No question about it.
Wisconsin law allows for "Group Hunting". The hunters must be within earshot of each other to be legal. |

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
If they give them out, why doesn't he have one? In some states it is "legal" to party hunt!! In the others, I'd say no!!

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
I walk the line very straight here in Minnesota. I myself wouldn't do it. What bugs me iswhen people buy deer licenses that don't even hunt. Example, a 90 year old man buying a bow hunting or rifle license, 9 times out of 10 he's not out there hunting. Someone in his family is the filling the tag for themselves. Alot of gun hunters in my area do this and it pisses me off!!!

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
Through his own neglect he missed the deadline to purchase online tags @ $5 each. I sure don't need any more does ( might kill one anyway) so I don't mind sharing.

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
I have been put in this position a few times with DMAP tags. The group of guys I sometimes hunt with are a meat hungry group. They say to me quite often, "if you see some does shoot em, we have plenty of tags". I don't do it. My opinion of it is that I try to follow the game laws and stay on the ethical side of things. For me part of being a sportsman is doing things by the book so to speak.

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
very simple........ no

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
No, though most hunters are aware that shooting does is good for herd management, I do not agree with tagging someone elses deer. Throughout my life hunting I have heard friends and strangers say those are not GODs laws they are mans laws. Everyone can justify his or her reasons to bend the rules but they are there to put everyone on the same playing level. I lost my best friend and hunting partner as a direct result of someone bending the "rules". Hunting is not about numbers, it is the culmanation of the whole experience.

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
It is illegal to kill a doe in PA without a doe tag....it is also illegal to tag a deer for someone else, that's two violations. Then, who sends in the report card..that would be you and that would be falsifying records, lying...one simple act of a friend shooting a doe illegally makes a chain reaction of unethical, immoral decisions...and when telling of it afterward, do you lie or tell the illegal truth.... not worth it.

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
yep...any time, any where, any place.

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
This is a real fine line here. What about a guy who loves to hunt but doenst like deer meat? Or if he did miss the date line of sending in for a tag? Yeah I know, I didnt answer the question. Me, personally, I like achieving my own goal of shooting a deer. I wouldnt feel right tagging the deer if I didnt shoot it. However if I was injured and couldnt get out, then yes I would tag it. I, myself, love deer meat. And if for some reason, I couldnt go out and a friend did get a doe and wanted me to tag it, yes I would.

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
This is an easy question for me. Not just NO but hell NO. I abide by the laws here and expect everyone else too as well. This is a form of poaching no matter how you look at it.

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
Up here in Ontario "party hunting" is and has been legal for years so in essence the Gov't calculates that into the calculation for issueing doe tags in a given zone. If they issue 200 tags in a given management zone then they want the tags filled and party hunting them doesn't change the management goal at all. So we routinely tag each others deer here all the time legally. If you had 5 doe tags with no plan to fill them all then why not let a friend fill one? The DNR felt it was sound management to issue the doe tags right? HAving said this you still have to abide by your states game laws.

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
well my ethical answer is yes i would i see nothing wrong with taging a doe for a buddy even a buck you pay for your tags so if you use one for him you wont use it for yours so it is not like a extra deer gets killed
indiana does not allow group hunting. i have a buddy who lets me hunt his land .he was going to kill a doe for me i was going to tag it so i could have some meat incase i did not get i one. i looked it up and since it is illlegel .he will kill it and tag it then i butcher it or pay the cost and have the meat. he does not need the tag since he hunts for bucks and he only need two deer or three to get him through the year. |
RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
When I first read the question, my initial reaction to the answer was a resounding no. And it still is because of the legal, moral, and ethical aspects of the situation. However, I do think I have found one exception where I would shoot a deer that would be tagged by another or tag one that was shot my another. The only situation where I would do that is with a wounded deer that needed to be put down because it would not survive. And before that situation would happen, I would want verbal confirmation of what was about to happen so both parties knew and understood that this was being done.
Other than that specific instance however...no, I wouldn't tag a deer that someone else shot. |
RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
In NY, we have DMP tags. I can sign them over to someone else (you actually sign the tag and hand it over). They can be transferred twice, so if he doesn't use it, he could transfer it back. Gives him the option of using the tag AND keeps you legal.

RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
You know when I first read this I thought sure, I would probably do it. Then after thinking about it I am not sure if I would or not. I think maybe it would depend on the situation. In Michigan I am pretty sure it would be illegal, you would be tagging someone elses deer.
Would I take a buddy out there and specifically tell him, "Hey, I have a few doe tags go ahead and put one down if you want and I'll tag it.", probably not. And if someone offered that to me, I would probably pass. That being said where I live I wouldn't have a problem with someone doing it. I don't think I would be enraged or so upset I would say something or turn them in. I just don't think it is something I would do is all. If that makes me a bad person I will just have to live with it. Now, if my buddy was a new hunter and he messed up and shot an antlerless deer somehow I would have no problem burning one of my tags on it. I don't think it would even phase me. Here in Michigan we don't have to check deer in or anything. Just shoot them, put a tag on it and take it home or to a processor. My biggest problem with telling someone to take a doe and use my tag would be if they got caught. What if they shot it and were waiting for me to tag it and a game warden came around? Things might not go so well then. I honestly don't think it would be huge deal, but it's still not worth it to me. Paul |
RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
Since party hunting (aka within "earshot") is legal here in WI, I would tag for him if he lacked antlerless tags IF....
We were actually coordinating our hunting in some way so that we were actually party hunting, not merely hunting near one another without any sort of "group" to it... AND IF we discussed the matter in advance. If he shot the doe without a doe tag or an already verified available and legal tag, my answer would be no. If I lived in an area where it was illegal or it would occur in a manner which would be illegal here in WI, my answer would definitely be no. |
RE: Would you tag a pals doe???
There is no scenario I can think of in NC that would warrant someone doing this. Too easy to get unlimited doe tags for oneself.
