My Problem. (Help please)
for whatever reason i cannot make a good shot on a deer. I dont get it. Everytime i shoot a deer i ALWAYS hit it too far back, im holding right behind the front shoulder blade and i hit GUTS. I dont know what im doing wrong i shot a doe tonight and man did i ever have a problem on my hands, she was 4 yards 4 YARDS and i still hit her in the guts. WHAT IS MY PROBLEM??? Part of me just wants to give up bowhunting for good. I dont get what this is all about my buck i shot i shot him far back too but i recovered him, then the other week i shot a doe and hit it too far forward!! never recovered that deer, then the first day of Archery season i shot a doe and hit her SQUARE in the guts, diddnt get ANY blood, searched for her for 2 days and never found her, then a week ago i find her laying about 40 yards from where i shot the last doe. I dont get it anyone have any suggestions, i get GREAT groups on the 3D targets and im a pro at estimating yardage so thats not my downfall, and i can shoot anyone who i have hung out with can attest to that. Anyone have any suggestions, i do get excited but im able to calm down by the time its time to do the job. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREAT!

RE: My Problem. (Help please)
not sure but you should try hanging a stand in your yard or a friends and try shooting from it. make sure you move it around allot and exspecially up close those shots can be tricky. good luck.

RE: My Problem. (Help please)
I mainly practice from a treestand, but on the rare occasion i do shoot from the ground i still get very consistant groups. Bullseye in the treestand, high on the ground.
Thanks for the imput. Ryan. |
RE: My Problem. (Help please)
That is your problem you aim in FRONT of the shoulder blade. J/k i suck too, maybe try a different achor point and a level on your sight, that helped me out a lot when shooting archery.

RE: My Problem. (Help please)
Are you possibly peeking to see where you arrow is going after you shoot? That would be my guess! Make sure nothing moves when you release that arrow. When your practicing, act like its a real deer and consentrate very hard.Practice with all your clothing on that you hunt with also.

RE: My Problem. (Help please)
I did to but on targets... Archery shop owner said I was peeking and sure enough I was. You just have to aim fire and hold bow still after the shot for one full second! it worked for me hope this helps.

Thanks for the imput. Ryan. One thing that has helped me is to go thru steps. Before a shot, I try to tell myself, range, pin, sight alignment, and pull thru the shot. Alot of guys like to grip thier release. I believe it causes them issues. If you don't grip your release, then you pull thru the shot. I have gone thru my share of bad shots. But if I follow the steps, usually turns out well. |

RE: My Problem. (Help please)
Is it possible you are just "aiming" your bow at the deer instead of looking down the peep sight? Alot of people do that with a gun, they point the gun but really dont look down the scope. In all the excitement you might be looking over the peep and at the deer.

RE: My Problem. (Help please)
I think it's one of 3...maybe ALL 3 of these, your "peeking", or your dropping your bow arm in order to view your shot, or yourunknowingly grippingyour bow as your excitement level increases with each step closer the deer get to within shooting distance.
Have you tried setting up a video camera and filmed yourself shooting? Is your bow string smacking your jacket? Are you sighted in with broadheads? I have heard that those illumanocks havehelped people who can't seem to stop "peeking" because they can pick up the arrow flight without "peeking". Just a idea for you maybe. |
RE: My Problem. (Help please)
My guess is that what ever you are using to cover your face while hunting is making you not pull your string back to your face close enough when you shoot. The further away the string is from your face while your at full draw the further back on the deer the shot will be. Just my thought. GL.

RE: My Problem. (Help please)
I hadthe same problemsmy huntinbuddy helped me .....Went just went over the basics..
1. RELAX !!!!!!!! take a few deep breathes to calm yourself (WE ALL GET BUCK FEVER) 2.Dont pull or jerk the bow away to look where your shot is going!( I bought lumenok this year and they helped they light up awsome) 3. Dont squeeze the bow before your shot ( try to practice w/ your hunting clothes on so you know that your bow string aint gonna hit your jacket/coat and from an elevated stand) 4.Plan your shot b4 it even happens,(When that big boy comes in where you can see him grab your bow and start thinking of when and when your gonna draw and shoot!!!!!) hope that it helps |
RE: My Problem. (Help please)
All good suggestions. Here is one more: aim for the opposite shoulder, or aim for the exit hole...

RE: My Problem. (Help please)
After many indepth conversations with some of my best bowhunting friends and going by what you guys all think i think i am.
1. Peeking.... i have yet to see an arrow hit a deer and i think im trying to hard. 2. DEER FEVER!!! i get so excited when i see deer because i rarley see them when i hunt. 3. I think i may also be guessing where i am on the deer insted of knowing 4. MY friend who kills big 140's each year told me what he does. he said that he goes 3.... 2..... POW. Thats just how he does it to keep himself calm and make sure that he did everything right he said he cant count the number of times he got to 2 and had to restart because he was doing something critically wrong that if he had just shot instead of counting that would have caused him to make a poor shot on a deer. I dont know keep the suggestions coming, i do practice with broadheads when it gets close to the season, but i dont know for sure what the problem is. Im gonna try some new stuff. I do practice from a treestand at random yards i have my neighbor move the target around and guess the yardage... anyhow i shoot with my clothes on too even my heavy winter stuff. Thanks a ton keep them comming. Ryan. |
RE: My Problem. (Help please)
Just a thought...Quit trying to watch your arrow and just concentrate on the shot. Good luck to you.

One other thing - Have you checked your eye dominance? (http://www.archeryweb.com/archery/eyedom.htm)
Could you beleft-eye dominant but shooting right-handed? -fsh |
RE: My Problem. (Help please)
I would agree with stab about the site level. My groups were somewhat sporadic until I bought a site with a level. I talked with the archery shop and after they told me that the bow had to be vertical in order to make consistant shots, it all made sense. It seemed that if the top of the bow was tipped slightly to the to the right I shot slightlylow and left. If it was tipped slightly to the left, I shot slightly high and right if I remember right. Another thing that I found is that whenI wear a face maskI have to make aconscious effort tohit the same anchor point every time. It is a lot harder to hit the same exact spot when you are not making skin contact and the added thickness of the mask changes your string position ever so slightly. That thickness, not hitting the same exact anchor point, the change in string position and the bow being slightly off vertical willraise all sorts of grouping issues. Just some things to think about. Good luck.

RE: My Problem. (Help please)
Try this when you come at full draw follow the back side of the front leg up instead of dropping in on it, when you reach the sweet spot exhale and release. Your shout shoudl look something like this or better:
(I aimed a little higher becasue of the distance and angle he was at) ![]() |
