RE: What to soak the skull in?
The process you are talking about is called maceration. I just use plain water with a little Rid-X in it. It takes about 2-4 weeks depending on temp.

You can use hydrogen peroxide, order those bettles that eat flesh off of the internet or do what I do......dig a hole throw it in there with the antlers sticking out of the ground, fill it back up with soil and throw a bucket over it. Come August or Setember of next year pull it out and things should be ready to go.

Scrape all you can off then boil it. Thats if you got a big pot and can do it outside. You don't want mom slapping you upside the head.

RE: What to soak the skull in?
My impression from what u stated is you just want to know how to get the meat and junk off the skull plate attached to the horns. Notto doa euro mount. What i do is run water on the plate than cover it in salt and let it sit for a few weeks. Dries everything up and you're set to go. Way we've been doing it for as long as I can remember.

RE: What to soak the skull in?
You could just skin it and hang it in a tree and let the weather dry it out.
It would'nt take but a few minutes to skin what little there is off the skull plate. I skin my skulls before I boil them and that just takes 30 minutes or so. |
RE: What to soak the skull in?
Just boil it for 30 minutes and the meat will scrape right off. I just did an entire skull for a euro mount that way.

Take a torch and burn the hair off, then let the skull plate dry a week or so and scrape the excess fat and meat off the plate. Its cheap and easy. Thats all I do.

I was told that fire ants will clean a skull in a hurry so I put my 7-point in a wire cage and set it on a ant bed. Well the ants are dormant for the winter. The skull is getting ripe! I'll be boiling it outside after work tonight.

RE: What to soak the skull in?
Sal-Soda works good, that is what we have always used. Boil it in there for a while. Now is the best and easiest way that we have found. After you boil...jump in your truck right away...head to the nearest car was...drop in a couple of quarters and blast all fo the crap off!! You can save the trip if you have your own pressure washer of course. That seems to work really well.
