Another gut shot thread...
 

Well, don't have much to say except for the fact I gutshot a nice buck this morning at 08:25. I grunted him and a smaller buck in. He was 35 yards out and the shot was perfect. I hit exactly where I was aiming....the stomach.[&:]I knew immediately when I saw the arrow sink into the buck farther back than I had wanted.

I waited one hour and got out the tree to check the arrow (which I still haven't found.) The ONLY thing I saw at the point of impact was brown hair and brown stomach matter. There was no blood whatsoever. I decided to go back home and come back later. Got back in the woods around 14:00 (about 5.5 hours) and couldn't find a thing.

I know the general direction in which he was headed...a thicket. I have pretty much given up on looking for blood. Just trying to spot the body. The GF and I are heading back out in the morning to give it another shot.

Wish me luck! It has been a bad year...hopefully I can change that.

he should be dead within 300 yards...if you didnt jump him unknowingly after waiting for that short of a time. Sorry man, hope you find him....

I'm fairly certain I didn't jump him while checking out the arrow. I'm going to hit it hard in the morning though.

Good luck duc....seriously, don't give up. Matt / PA just called me, said they stopped at a convinience store and saw a truck with huge antlers sticking up. They walked up and talked to the guy. The guy had a 207" buck in the truck he just found from a week ago, yup, gut shot.

Personally speaking 5.5 hours isn't enough time to start looking after a known gut shot. The guy I wrote of above, jumped his deer the next morning....it died later....I wouldn't even consider starting until 8 hours passed.

Look in creek bottoms, water sources and thickets. He'll want to bed.

I have to ask though, you said you hit exactly where you were aiming, I'm assuming you were not intentionally aiming into the guts? I think I know you better than that, right?

It wasn't intentional. I thought I was aiming forward enough but in all actuality, I was not. I have a mental defect or something when it comes to aiming at the shoulder (directly behind it) because I don't want to stick him in the shoulder.[&:] You're right....last night at work I read Matt/PA's thread for inspiration. I know the meat may spoil but I want to find my buck.

Thanks guys for all the support. I'll let yall know something later. I also have the next 3 days off from work so I have plenty of time to look.

How bout one of those deer tracking dogs. If nothing turns up today that might be the route I would take. Good luck on yer search.

Found a blood trail today and was able to track it into the thicket. This confirmed what I already knew. The blood trail just ended midway through the thicket. We searched for a couple more hours and didn't have any luck. I have the next three days off so maybe I will be able find this guy. This was a hands and knees type blood trail but there were a few areas that he bled a lot. I know he is dead, I just have to find him.

Don't give I had a friend shoot his first buck with a bow last year a 10 point it ran into a thicket and died he found it a month laster and was still aboe to mount the rack. Don't give up even after time.

That sucks. You did the right thing wait to track on a gut shot I usually give it 10 hrs. It is bad to lose a deer but at least you can be respected for working your tail off to find the deer. Most people would give up. Hang in there you will find it If there is water around you might want to look there if he is shot in the stomach he will need to drink water to sooth the pain they also will roll in the mud

Well, its not looking good. I searched 3 days for this buck and did not find a thing. I went yesterday and searched my butt off but didn't have any luck. I just got sick of searching. I went to that property this morning to do some more hunting and searching afterwards but it was pouring down rain. So one hour and 40 some miles later; I went back to bed. I needed a break.

I'll still hunt that property some and see if I stumble upon him. I've looked all through that thickets, water sources, and even "obvious" places I thought he wouldn't be.

He'll show up. Hunt the property this weekend more deer are there and "sniff" around maybe you will smell him.
