Hunt for the "backyard buck" begins!
 

I just moved this year to a subdivision with 2-3 acre lots. I have a great funnel that is in the woods behind my house, along a creek bed. I have seen a buck twice with a very large body for this area and really large main beams. I believe he is an old buck that is coming down in terms of antler quality. The wind is right today, finally. I have one small problem, I only have around 40 yards of the creek line I can hunt and am not going to go on anyone elses property unless I shoot the buck and have to track. At that time, I have permission to track a deer from the two land owners next to me. I am gonna try to lure him in with some young buck scent...we have a good 10mph north wind that hopefully will push the scent down into what I believe is his bedding area 80-100 yards away.

Any thoughts on suburban deer hunting? First time I have done it really. Thanks all.

Yeah with the time change..next week after work I'll be hunting neighborhood bucks too. There's some good ones but it will also mean just as many sits seeing nothing! [:o]

It's actually a little exciting cuz, I haven't hit my neighborhood farms this year due to unseasonal winds. Plus the yearly reports of the Monster Buck are circulating as expected!

I have hunted deer exactly like you say ALOT of the time. A good amount of luck comes into play since you dont have alot of room to work with. Here in Jersey alot of people use corn, but i like to use mock scrapes. Sounds like that funnel will help you out alot. Good luck.

I have been hunting behind my house a lot this year. Last week I killed a big doe. Two days before I shot her she ran off a buck I estimated to be a 10 point. To my knowledge that buck is still back there so I will be as well. It is very satisfying to go hunting without starting the truck. There's also zero competition for the deer since it is in town and there aren't many archery hunters here.

No buck today. Did see two nice red foxes. About 5, my neighbor began using a pneumatic nailgun on his roof!! LOL. Quite an experience to be sitting by my house while all this activity was going on, trying to hunt in the meanwhile. I did find something odd. I found a small blood trail on the trail I hunt off of....weird???...

i sometimes hunt like that you can find some good deer in those neighborhoods that nobody hunts and you can only use a bow . you need to make sure you have a good shot to take it down quick . the only draw back is like you said you don't know what the neighbors are doing . I have had them nail, chainsaw, run a backhoe, let the dogs run out to where i am ,do all the strangest things early in the morning then be dead silent2 hours later. isn't it ironic

What's been driving me crazy since I moved into my house 9 years ago is the fact that I have just under 10 acres out my back door that I'm unable to hunt due to a total hunting ban within the town limits. Get this, the property line on my land boarders the town line. My hunting partners have been busting my stones for years to just hunt my property (I currently have a nice 6-pointer and 4-5 doe that frequent the propery.........they even come out and chew on my nice landscapingevery winter). I live in "tree hugger" central, so I don't want to risk getting busted for hunting my land. Three years ago, they just about hung a guy on the other side of town that was filmed by the people next to him hunting his small lot and they even got him on tape dragging a deer from the woods. Yes, I did call the town supervisor about getting permission to hunt my property and I got the "don't waste your time going before the town board to try to get approval to hunt" My neighbors are cool, but one of them is a town cop and you never know about him.

WillR--what has our friggin country come to when a man cannot hunt on his own property?

In the county in which I live, there is an extended doe season until March. We have alot of doe that need to be taken out as alot get hit by cars and such. At least my backyard will give me some piece of mind in the early part of next year, even if I dont hunt but once a week.

Well I got up today about 2 hour after sun-up...went outside to do some work...I hear a rustling down by the creek in my backyard...the wind changed and I was downwind of the noise...I could have sworn I smelled a stinky old buck...I heard the rustling again for another minute or so then nothing. About 3 hours later I went down quietly and checked the mock scrape...it was torn up and a big hoof print was in it! Time to spring my trap this week to finally see what this buck is all about!
