12 foot tree stand more like 6 feet
i bought my tree stand from walmart 12 feet high cheap but nice for a 100bucks
well my last hunt i noticed that i was in a bowl which i new but what i had not noticed was the bowl sinks in about 6 feet so i am only about 6 feet off the ground level i am shooting at i plan to move my stand hopfully tomorrow do you guy think me only being 6 feet off there eye level might have pushed them even if they did not spook with them not bolting when they would see me |
RE: 12 foot tree stand more like 6 feet
Hmmm, I would not want to be six feet off the ground unless I have amazing cover. That also defeats the purpose of buying a 12' $100 ladder stand....
I'd move it.... |
RE: 12 foot tree stand more like 6 feet
ditto, move it

RE: 12 foot tree stand more like 6 feet
what hurts is on my first hunt i had a doe spot me about 50 yards off heading right for me and it was liek she looked right at eye level then a hour later i had another doe come 10 yards out and i could not get my arrow off before she ran off

Yeah, you definitely need to move that stand, and I'd recommend having a good deal of cover around you even when you're at a full 12'
I prefer the 20' range myself, but have hunting from some 12' ladder stands with great cover (pine tree setting) and had deer within 10yds not have a clue. Cover has a lot to do with it.... |

I always wondered how people hunt out of those little things. I would buy a couple 4 ft. extensions and put it in the best cover you can find.

my little rule is 15' to the platform. i started out with 12 foot ladder stands, and realized they're too low. i'd say move it!

agreed, 15ft is the optimum 'low stand'

RE: 12 foot tree stand more like 6 feet
There is nothing wrong with a 12ft stand if its put in cover.
If I can only get 12ft (give or take), I usually use a lock on in a pine tree. I cut as few limbs as possible. I use the limbs for steps and add screw ins if needed. I've killed plenty of deer like this. I've had deer sniff my tree steps and never see me. Its all about cover and movement. |
