For all of you NY hunters!
DEC TO ISSUE ADDITIONAL DEER MANAGEMENT PERMITS
Hunters Previously Denied May Receive DMPs by Mail, Others Available First-come, First-served on Nov. 1 A second opportunity for some hunters previously denied or who did not obtain Deer Management Permits before the Oct. 1, 2007, deadline is being provided by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Commissioner Pete Grannis announced today. Approximately 39,400 Deer Management Permits (DMPs) will be mailed to some hunters who were previously denied permits during the initial DMP application period. Also, left over DMPs will be available in several Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) beginning November 1, 2007. "New York's hunters represent the foundation of the State's deer management programs," Commissioner Grannis said. "Hunters have enjoyed a proud legacy in New York State and we look forward to continuing that success this year. Issuing these permits enhances our ability to properly manage the deer population here in New York." DMPs allow hunters to harvest antlerless deer in specific WMUs. In order to provide DMPs at point-of-sale locations, DEC must anticipate the number of applicants in each WMU and assign a probability to each unit so that the appropriate number of DMPs are issued. In several WMUs, DEC received fewer DMP applications by the Oct. 1 deadline than projected and so, despite some applicants being denied in the random selection process, not enough DMPs were issued in these units. To issue the remaining DMPs, DEC randomly selected among applicants who were previously denied DMPs in these affected WMUs during the initial application period. DEC has completed the random selection and has begun to mail permits. About 30 percent of the hunters previously denied first permits in these units will receive a DMP. Applicants from the following WMUs may receive DMPs: 3C, 3F, 3G, 3H, 3J, 3K, 3N, 3P 4A, 4B, 4F, 4G, 4H, 4J, 4N, 4O, 4P, 4R, 4S, 4T, 4W, 4Y, 4Z 5K, 5P 6H, 6K, 6R, 6S 7H, 7S 8F, 8J, 8N, 8R, 8S, 8T, 8X 9G, 9M, 9S, 9Y For locations of these WMUs and updates, check the 2007-08 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide or http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8302.html on DEC’s website. Hunters not selected for a DMP will not receive a mailing from DEC. Hunters are urged to wait for their permits to arrive by mail. Selection for one of these permits will not affect any preference points issued to hunters who were not selected for their first choice area during the original application period. In addition, DEC will reopen the DMP application process starting Nov. 1 on a first-come, first-served basis for WMUs that have not reached target totals during the random selections. Hunters may apply for leftover DMPs at any DEC license sales outlet beginning Nov. 1. Leftover DMPs will not be available by phone or by mail. DMP applications will be accepted for the following WMUs: 1C, 3S (bowhunting-only), 8A, 8F, 8G, 8H, and 9A During this extended application period, DEC will issue DMPs for an individual WMU all day once a WMU is opened for leftover issuance. The status of permits will be reviewed each night at midnight, and any filled units will be removed from the list of those available, with no further applications accepted for those units. |
