I wont paint as rosy a picture as some on here, you didnt mention that there was much blood on the arrow so Iwould not benot so certain of a liver hit, much less lung. No stomach contents.....I am thinking sincehe is a buck, and it is that time of year... His stomach (in theory anyway:eek:) would be mostly empty especialy if he was a dominant rutter.

Luck with the finding! No advice to give as i am pretty sure youknow more than me anyway! Most gut hits don't do 250 yards. Hope he is one of those.

Not sure your online or out looking. Honestly and I'm no one to tell you what to do when tracking, you could teach me. I however would not wait until tomorrow to track him. I wouldn't wait anything more than 8 hours. Nothing vitally hit will run 8 hours later, if it does, you didn't kill it.

A liver shot can be recovered 4 hours later....true guts, 6-8 preferably 8...

What time did you hit him?

What state are you hunting? There are 3 guys in IL willing to track from the United Blood Trackers and 2 in Wisconson.

Good luck on finding him Greg.... Sounds to me like you may have gotten some liver and if you said he was slightly quatering away, you might have got one lung also. I would think he shouldn't be too far off, but giving him time isthe safest thing to do with an unsure shot. Best of luck!!!!!

GregHang in there you know as well as anyone what it`s going to take to find him,
I took a buck about three weeks ago i made a 30yrd piss poor shot.
Hit way back as a matter of fact right threw the the stomack.

I knew i had to back out and give this buck some time and that just what i did and after waiting for over 5 1/2 to 6hrs i went back picked up the trail and found my buck about 80-100 yrds away.

You did the right thing backing out and giving him time to lay down.

Keep you head up and stay focussed, and persistent.

Sounds to me (from what you described) that you hit the liver, if so I'd bet that deer is dead now. Good luck but I don't think you'll need it, I think you will find him.

Greg i hope you find him. your doing the right thing by waiting. sounds like mabey a liver shot. This is the exact thing that has cost me two out of three p&y whitetails. they were in a hurry and i did not grunt or mah to stop them, tried the shot and missed all together. good luck!!

I think you should maybe learn from Greg....I have seen the pictures in his wallet of all the big bucks he has killed over the years and they are huge...Something tells me year after year of big bucks, that he might know what he is doing. Now go get Him Greg! I want to see a pic of this buck at next years get toegether!

Greg, really sounds like the hit Matt put on. Deer died within 150 yards. Just a matter of finding him. This may sound weird but I am glad you feel this way because it means you care about the sport and its ethics. BU tremeber you are human and we all can try to stand back and say "boy I would have done that different" but until someone is in your shoes they can not judge. good luck my man you should find that Buck

Best of luck to you on the recovery Greg. I agree with the others. Sure sounds like a liver hit to me. Just recovered a buddy of mines buck lasthe shot last night in the liver. About 3 drops of blood over 200 yards and a dead buck at the end. Good luck man stay possitive.

Greg obviosly your experience is far above mine buti would just like to say that i liver shot a 6 pointer earlier this year the deer died within 60 yds and i found him within 30 mins of the shot. Obviously this a single acount but if it is a liver shot i have a feeling your deer is good and dead. I did the same thing you did, shot while the deer was walking at 15 yds. Greg, There's no doubt in my mind that you've got a dead deer. I trust your skillsenough to know you'll find him. Amazing what you can learn of people by reading posts, but we know your a seasoned veteran

Guys, thanks for all the input and confidence. Even in a situation such as this, I remain optimistic and confident that I will find and recover this deer.

I decided to wait until morning to search. It is killing me to do so, but I think it's the right thing to do. As most of you know, the biggest mistake one can make in tracking a marginally hit deer, is to push too soon. I know, I've done it. As most of you also know, if you do push too soon, the deer is usually not recovered. This deer is dangerously close to the property line and a large cornfield. I thought it'd be best to let him bed near the creek and hopefully find him there in the morning and not have to search a huge cornfield.

BTW, big Duane's comment didn't bother me as I thought it was humerous. He probably didn't know any better.;)

I'd get a lanternand a buddy (to help with the drag)and get after him now, 12 hours is enough and you might save it from the coyotes.
