put one out of it's misery this morning
This morningI had plans on hunting some new property I gained permission to. Wind wasn't perfect, so I decided to hunt my 30 behind the house. After daylight, I see a lone deer slowly, and I mean slowly making its way towards my stand. I could tell right away it was a fawn, but something else caught my attention. I was staggering all over the place, almost like it was drunk. It walked into saplings, and appeared to be hit. I thought my neighbor had shot it, so I get out my binos and check it over. Nope, no wounds, but it had drool hanging about 8 inches from its mouth, and its eyes were closed [&:]. It would stop every few seconds and cough/ wheeze.I could see its ribs when it approached my stand. No joke, if this deer weighed 30 lbs on the hoof I would be surprised. After watching it struggle to mystand, I decided to take it. I called the DNR and asked them about the symptoms of blue tongue...he said that was what it sounded like to him. This was the first kill of the year for me, and totally heartbreaking to watch.

Thats a noble thing to do.
Just curious, what did you do with it? If thrown away, did the DNR say you had to use a tag? |
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
He told me to leave it lay where it dropped, and I did have to tag it. Burning a tag wasn't an issue, but watching it suffer was like nothing I had ever seen before.

Good job you did the right thing, poor little fella.

RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
What state was this in? Did the DNR say they would like to do any tests on it to see what disease it had if any?
|
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
This was in IL, the reason I called was to see if they wanted to see/take the deer in. He said the number of calls they had received about sick or dead deer this fall was mind blowing. Hopefully we will get a killing freeze soon.

You did the right thing but I dont see why you had to use a tag. The deer would have died within 24 hours and wasnt fit to eat.
I know a guy who killed a doe and it had a lot of tumors all over it. He called the CO and he told him to just leave and he didnt have to use a tag. |
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
What part of IL?
There have been alot of deer killed by the disease I can't pronounce or rather, spell........... you know, the one spread by gnats. |
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
Very sad. I hope it's not the start of an epidemic.
|
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
You did the right thing. I would have hated to see that. I'd burn a tag as well to end the suffering of an animal sick like that.
|
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
you definately did the right thing. sorry you had to see it as it would be tough. i too am surprised you had to use a tag.
|
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
why did he tell you to leave it lay there are they going to come get it or what i would not wontit just laying there
i would burn it if nothing Else and i know here in Indiana we are expecting 32 tomorrow night in southwest hopefully it will get there soon as for a tag i know here in Indiana if you find one that has a disease you kill it call a dnr guy then take it to a vet they check it out and you get a new tag if it is diseased |
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
You did a good thing.......

RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
Yes, that was the right thing to do. I hate to see an animal suffer.
This thread points out how deer hunters feel about deer. Yes, we do kill them, but we want humane, quick kills and can't stand deer suffering. Anti hunters apparentlyare the ones who would rather have them die slowly like this. How ironic. |
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
Good job that wasthe best thing to do.
|
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
Definitely the right thing to do. I'd at least have them check it out to rule out any other possibilities like CWD. But w/CWD they say it normally doesn't affect fawns.

Some asked why I left it lay. I called the DNR when I came in the house and our game warden told me that he didn't have the time or resources to check out all the EHD (blue tongue) cases in our area. He also told me that no other animals, deer or scavengers were at risk from the deer laying there. As far as tagging it, he told me that since I did kill it while hunting, it needed to be turned in.
bigtim6656 why did he tell you to leave it lay there are they going to come get it or what i would not wontit just laying there Tim, its still laying there if you want it. |

Congrats!

RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
Poor deer. He was probably just out chasing hot poontang all night, maybe downed a bottle of Night Train or two, finally headed back to his bed to sleep off a magnum hangover after a long night of carousing with some "morally casual" does- and you go and shoot him. [>:]
Real nice Dave. Real nice. LOL |

Good Job on doing the right thing!

RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
It was in Marion County.
Fran, it was a little doe....so that adds a twist to your version of the story LOL.[8D] |
RE: put one out of it's misery this morning
I had to put down a 6 pointer on my farm thursday that had that 'HD' disease. Game warden told me the same thing, that they would not come look at it because they had so many calls on it. Its a shame to see the deer diing like this, but I heard after a couple good frost that it will be taken care of, at least untill next year. I live in VA, and the game warden said nothing to me about havinf to use a tag.
