Question about cattle herd

Do you think a cattle heard of about 300-400 head on 2000 acres will hurt or help the deer population? Property is around 60% pasture and 40% timber.

RE: Question about cattle herd

Deer aren't big fans of cattle (or so I've been told) and they do compete for resources (like with hogs).

So I would rather hunt an area that doesn't have cattle, but it's not like they are going to drive the deer
off the place, it just might lower the population and your sightings some.

RE: Question about cattle herd

This is a lease we have the rights on to hunt and there is another guy that has the rights for cattle. We've had this property for around 12yrs and have shot some whoppers. I was just wondering how it would be without cattle on the property. Some day maybe I will find out when I win the lottery and buy it all.LOL!

RE: Question about cattle herd

The buck I killed Sunday AM was on his way to a 80ac pasture that was full of cattle. So I don't think they mind too much.

I agree with tx, 2000 acres is a big farm. I've hunted similar ground with a larger herd and while at times it can be frustrating if they move in on you, most of the time you can find those areas that are more deer friendly and thus better for your hunting. Best of luck.

RE: Question about cattle herd

i've hunted a spot before with lots of cattle, and from what ive seen, they dont mind them at all. i actually killed my biggest buck with the help of a calf. he was staring into the woods for like 5 minutes with his ears perked up, i turned around and saw a nice 8 pointer behind my stand. the buck started walking torward my stand, the cattle left the woods, and i shot him at 22 yards.

and yes, cattle do go into the woods, unfortunately.
