earn a buck zones promoting killing younger does
i have heard alot of you talking about earn a buck zones where you must kill a doe to get a buck tag .
I am lucky to be in Indiana which does not practice this does it not worry you guys that this promotes people to kill the first doe they see be it a yearling or a 4 year doe |
RE: earn a buck zones promoting killing younger does
So what?
Does are does. In areas where EAB is in place, does need shot and bucks need a little protection. Doesn’t matter how old the doe is. The only thing to worry is if a BB counts as a doe, which I would hope that it wouldn’t. |

I see a problem here in Pa on a farm I hunt sometimes. Guys are shooting all the adult does and there's way too many immature ones left. There needs to be a balance. EAB works in some states pretty well here in Pa we don't have that program. Like rybo said though the BB are in danger of being shot by those guys who don't care to look first.

In WI, for EAB, it's "antlerless" rather than "does". Antlerless is any deer not having at least one antler 3" or longer.

I agree with Rybohunter, and I live in the Southern Tier of Indiana. The answer to too many deer is shoot does and always has been. One quibble I have with our bonus antlerless tags is that they aren't doe specific.

RE: earn a buck zones promoting killing younger does
Yes I agree with the young numbin bucks getting killed because they are the stupidest deer in the woods but i think that phase of our WI EAB program is for the most part over. The FIRST year we had the program there was alot and i mean ALOT of young bucks killed because people just wanted there sticker and shot the first stupid antlerless deer to come by. IMO now that we've had the program for a few years people have their stickers and can bank their stickers for the following year allowing them to be more selective on what they shoot, more adult does for example. Although the zones that have the EAB for the first time wil go through the year class of a bunch of nubbins being killed IMO I dont see the large percentage of nubbins being killed anymore in the veteran EAB zones. I don't think killing the young does is the problem. What I see as the problem is the guys that take the "risky" shot to "hopefully" kill the doe so they can get their buck tag. Way too many running shots or bad angles are taken to get that treasured buck tag.
I am in the CWD zone in WI and we are earn a buck. WI has started that any buck tags earned this year can be used NEXT year as well IF your zone is earn a buck again. So right now I have 3 buck tags for this year or next. If I am really really lucky and get say 2 bucks this year I still start the season with one tag next year. That gives me the ENTIRE season to earn additional tags for next year and the year after. |
