Morning/Evening is Best

If I had to choose either getting on site 1.5 hours before sunrise and have to leave by 10 a.m. or hunt early afternoon till after sundown, which is a better choice?

This weekend is the last in CA. My wife and I have been in the field each weekend for primarily morning hunts and haven't had a shooting situation yet. We've seen a few does and at least 2 small/young bucks. Nothing that would even fill one shelf in the freezer.

What would the more experienced hunters choose for the last weekend, continue morning hunts or are evenings perhaps a better choice?

I want my first buck with my xbow.

That's a tough call and I couldn't give up either. It all depends on the ground you hunt. Are they coming to it, leaving it or trafficing through it?

3 of the last 5 buck I've shot have been evening hunts, the P&Y statistics show more entries from evening hunts, you make the call and good luck.

I've had better success in the evening, butI usually have more evenings to hunt than mornings.

I agree with Rob, it depends on your set, although my biggest bucks have come from the morning hunts

A lot depends on your land and the deer. Personally I prefer hunting in the evenings...... I've seen and taken more deer in the PM. However mybiggest bucks I've killed have been in the morning[:-]. Tough to keep me out of a stand in the AM knowing that.

I tend to agree. I tend to prefer morning hunts because the area I frequent receives alot of hunting pressure. You ( a hunter in my area ) have a better chance of seeing something earlier in the morning in my case.

I've seen more and killed more deer in the afternoon, but nothing beats watching the woods wake up from 20' up a tree.

Gimp...It really depends on the stand that you have chosen...I have a few stands that are good both mornings and evenings, but as a rule its one or the other....

Mornings, I prefer to be closer to the bedding area, evenings I see more activity closer to the area that they feed in...

The stands that pay off during mornings and evenings are feeding areas (like white oaks) that are close to the bedding area....Now you need to be in these stands earlier than some get into them in the evenings, because you are nearer the bedding area, they could show up by 4:00pm...
