3-D Tournaments Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 

Hey everyone I am new to this so bear with me. I am really involved in bow hunting and really enjoy it. I am 21 years old and would like to get into some archery tourneys. My dad, grandpa and even my grandma were all world champion archers in there respected divisions. But it was a long time ago, and they just stick to hunting now. So i would really like to pick it up. I am pretty good with the help of my dad and grandpa, I can group 5 arrows at 40 yrds in about the size of a small coffee can. I live in East Texas and would like to find out some information on those tournaments any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You know that is a good question! If I want to get started in the 3-D world how do I do it? My wife and I and one son have talked about doing it as a family activity. Do you have to qualify in some way or are there starter brackets where you can work your way up? I've never been to a shoot so I know absolutely nothing. I know it would help me in the hunting world too. Do you need specialized equipment or can you still be competetive with your hunting bow?

Yes, it would be a great weekend activity for a family that loves getting out in the woods and all. I'd recommend getting decent pair of binoculars (8x max) and a hip quiver and just using your hunting equipment to start with. You'll probably be using a compound bow with a fixed pin sight and a stabilizer less than 12 inches. That will put you in the Hunter Class, which should shoot from a green stake that is usually placed 18 to 35 yards from the target at the shoots I'm familiar with (of course sometimes much closer and sometimes a bit farther). You won't have to qualify or anything, just pay $8 or so per person shooting (not bad I think for 30 targets).

There will be a beaten down path you'll walk and a target marker for each target and several different colored stakes. You'll go to the stake and put your foot against it to take the shot (only get one). You want to try to guess the exact distance to your target each shot because depending on the arc of your arrow (or arrow speed) the better chance you have of a higher scoring shot. From a distance you won't be able to see the scoring rings with the naked eye, which is why I recommend the nockulars. There will be a small circle (11) and a larger circle (10) right about in the center of the "kill zone"(8) and the rest of the body of the animal will score a 5. Like this:

You might note that the rings on this target are for a quartering away shot and generally the rings represent a perfectly broadside shot. While your playing the rings on the 3D course, the shots don't always represent the best possible angle in a hunting situation. It looks like this guy might have 2 line cutters!

Alpine, go to - www.shootcentral.com -. It's a website that has a long list of Texas clubs and tournament schedules. I know there is a club in Tyler and I think there are clubs in Jasper and Longview also. You might find even more in your area on that site. And check with the pro shops in your neck of the woods too.

ALPINE, I think you'll find 3D to be great fun. I started shooting with my 6 yr old son last summer. He, we, had a ball. He'd call the animals, then shoot. The groups around us got a real kick out of him!<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> The smile and excitement he showed were worth more than you'll ever know, as he yelled &quot;I got a 10X&quot;. Of course all the misses were because his bow made a &quot;funky&quot; shot. If I'm not mistaken, the hunter class is usually 35 yds max, from the yellow stake. Under the new IBO rules there is now an 11 ring inside the 10.

The 11 ring is what was the X ring. Now instead of 10X, you get an 11. The extra points will help make up for a 5 or 8.
