Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
Here is the place I will be at this weekend. Not flat by any stretch, quite hilly. Anyway, I have a couple places in mind, but I'm curious as to where you guys think would be a good place to catch a buck cruising this weekend.

RE: Another where would you sit.....
If those are crop grounds in the northwest & southeast corners, either one of them. Otherwise, where ever the deer are! duh!

RE: Another where would you sit.....
bottom right corner or about an inch up from the lat numbers in those little clearings
|
RE: Another where would you sit.....
repost with those red blobs removed and I can show ya;)
|
RE: Another where would you sit.....
anyway to post a cropped topo of the area mobow?? hunting pretty much pure woods, thats the first place id look is the good ole topo...
access also comes to mind. if i pick a spot in the NE corner, how are you going to get there?? how much land is that?? looks like a fair chunk of land... i really dont see too much screaming at me since its woods and pastures...maybe those open fields down at the end of the road...but since its pasture, id just be as quick to look for the oaks or other food sources...ive never been a field hunter unless im setup in a transitional zone off a field.. man that looks like a big chunk of land lol... |
RE: Another where would you sit.....
It is indeed a big ole chunk of land. The actual farm is 250 acres, but we have access to about 600 total. I'm trying to get a topo layer on google earth, but it either doesn't do it, or I haven't figured out how yet. I'll find a topo somewhere....Gimme a bit...

Mo, are there any trails cut through the place? i.e 4 wheelers trails, logging roads?
Honestly it's very hard to pick a spot there, it's probably just going to take you getting out there and doing a little scouting. |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
This is a place I fairly familiar with. And when it comes to does......I got them pegged. I'm really wanting to focus my energies on buck travel routes.......Funnels.
There is a 4 wheeler/logging road around the circumference of the big ridge, dead center. If you'll see that saddle on the western edge of that, I let a yearling 4 point walk there last year. The SE point dropping off that ridge, I saw a nice 8 last year, and the NE corner of that ridge, a 120" 8........Brian shot a GIANT in the valley just to the north of that ridge..... |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
wow that looks alot different than i thought!
the ridge and slight saddles and points to the north of the road look interesting to me..as does the next point to the north(NW on map)... really like that point between them 2...theres the small valley with that point between the hillsides.. i really dont know...that all kinda stands out to me... |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
your right on focusing on funnels...thats why the saddles and points stand out...i never liked hunting bottoms...wind is a PIA and i like to be either on a bench or point or up on a ridge...
though i killed my buck in the bottom this year.... other than the bedding area not being too far, i honestly dont know why that spot has always been good to my buddy...and now me. guess it is the only real opening in that bottom...wierd spot...but it worked...wind was HECK though. swirled ALL morning. i sat there hoping my scent control was upto par(knowing i didnt spray down before i left camp..im used to leaving my truck, not camp..i keep my DDW in the truck..never brought it in...though everything was sprayed, aired out and stored...guess it worked lol.. |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
If there are oaks around the ravines (big ditches to those in MO) that's where you want to be. I have attached your hybrid with yellow circles for you. hehehe
|
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
AF, there are oaks there, in fact, it's almost exclusively black oak. And I mean that quite literally....of all those trees, I would bet a doughnut 95% of them are black oaks.
They bed quite literally everywhere. This place really is big......Which is why it's so difficult to hunt. Mauser, I've set on that slight saddle and that ridge to the north. In fact, that ridge is one of my favorite spots. I see deer there all the time, but they're all......................does........[&o] If you head all the way to the north, there's a small inside corner on the side of a ridge....That's the spot I'm really thinking about hunting this weekend, wind permitting.....I'll put a yellow dot there... ![]() |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
I would hunt that saddle right in the middle of the property if your going in blind. Find some oaks up there and hunt HI. Looks like a nice piece of land! Good Luck and be safe!

RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
There has got to be a good trail going around the end of that ridge, or maybe even up the hill out there where the red dot is.

Alright brother, here are my thoughts. I see lots of funnels, using the steeper terrain (I feel) will benefit you tremendously. I really like the finger of trees that comes out down on the SE near the river. Anyway, let us know what happens...

RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
Man, I'll tell you guys what......after seeing the places ya'll are picking out, I know one thing.....The reason I haven't killed one ISN'T because I'm sitting in the wrong places. Dubbya, I've seen or killed deer on at least 6 or your spots.......
Man, I just need to lay off the does, be patient, and just catch a small break......Thanks guys. |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
You'll get that chance bud... don't you worry.
Oh yeah, just a word of advice: When the 7th of November rolls around and a doe comes running full speed and stops broadside at 20 yards with her tongue hanging out and looks back... don't shoot her!!!!:D:D:D |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
Awwwwww maaaaaaannnnnnn........And such a perfect shot too!! [8D]
Hey, you would be proud of me buddy. I've had opportunity to kill 5 does this year.......I haven't let an arrow go yet......;) |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
Are there any bucks on that property? All I hear you talk about is does. You have to have bucks around in order to kill one!!
![]() This is what they look like. :D |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
LMAO....you've got a point my friend. :D:D
I hunted the first week of November there last year, and saw 6 different bucks. But, all but 1 were 2 1/2 or under, and a couple of those were yearlings. 2 years ago Brian shot a 165 opening day of rifle season off that property though. My late friend Darrell saw 2 one evening that he says went over 140.......We've just been so concerned w/ shooting deer that we were sitting in doe sets......And, like you eluded to earlier......If a doe walked by, we shot her. Didn't even give the buck a chance to show up. But we've been pretty diligent about shooting does and letting the buttons walk. Now, 4 years ago we had some trouble w/ that.....In all, I think we killed 4 buttons that year....[:@] But that was back in the days before we gave a damn....[&:] |
RE: Another where would you sit.....HYBRID PHOTO ADDED
Hey man, where you get that topo from?
