Killing Does: Its The Cool Thing to Do

In the spirit of all the Nanny Schwacking that's been going on around here lately, my dear friend Mr. dukemichaels and I wanted to get in on the fun so we could be cool too. So with the warm temps this past weekend and the bucks not moving until dark, we took the opportunity to let the air out of a few does, on film no less. I shot mine Friday night, Mike shot his Saturday night. Both double lung shots, both easy tracking jobs, and both our first kills on video. Granted, we didn't kill any bucks but we sure had fun regardless.

Unfortunately I don't have time to edit the video before I leave for the Campbell Outdoor Challenge onWeds morning, so you'll have to wait to see that until I get back. But trust me, it's good. :D

PS - I love my Nikon D40 camera. This thing takes great photos.

Those aren't DOES! They're HORSES!

If we're going by the pound....I still have some catching up to do.;)

Congrats, guys. The photos are beautiful.

When we had a one deer limit, I never took a shot at does. However, does became mandatory a number of years ago (you have to kill 2 or more to make your 2nd buck tag available) and I got accustomed to the idea. I no longer shoot immature bucks -esp when does are usually more readily available and it helps to even out the buck:doe ratio.

Hey Dave - the property we were on is literally infested with does. They've freakin' EVERYWHERE. So we figured that we'd take the opportunity to take a few on film, and build our confidence up a little bit before the rut kits in. It's amazing what a well placed arrow at 20 yards will do for your enthusiasm and confidence in your ability to make the shot when that monster is standing in front of you.

Nice shootin' Jim. I'm waiting for a doe to step out in front of me. I've had three smaller bucks in bow-range so far this season. That's it. It's either a wall-hanger or does for me this year, so congrats to you.

He was close last night, but we ran out of light unfortunately. We needed about another 5-10 minutes to seal the deal, but it was a no-go. Had two bucks, one on either side of us, and neither would get closer than 60 yards. That's life though!

Ah, anyone can kill a doe. 4 pointers are more of a challenge. Those small targets are also harder to hit than some big ole fat doe.[8D][8D] Besides that, they have dragging handles on top of their head. I sat deep in the swamp the other day and had a doe that would have field dressed over 150 pounds. Believe it or not, she had a nice sized fawn with her. My first thought, How do I drag that big dang thing out of here with no handles. I let her go. It had nothing to do with the 45 yard quartering to shot.[&:][:'(]:(:(:(

What are you doingfor the Campbell Outdoor Challenge?
Hunting and filming of course. We finally got some cool weather that moved in, so I'm crossing me fingers that we see some good buck action. If nothing else, perhaps I'll stick another doe on film. I figure sooner or later if I shoot enough of them, a buck has to come by and give me a shot. After all, if you can do it, anyone can.

As for the camera - now that I've gone Digital SLR I don't think I'll ever go back to a simple point and shoot camera. You can do some amazing things with these cameras. I already find myself wanting more and better lenses, and I even contemplated stepping up to a D80, but that's getting a little too big to carry around in my pack. The D40 is the perfect size, and gives you great photography with a little bit of know-how.

Fraley - we were in Pike County, IL. Mike should be doing some hunting in WI this week, but I think if he can't connect with a doe soon, he's going to pull up stakes and focus on IL during the rut.

Frank - good luck in Montana. I expect you to slay another beast!

Here's a few more photos from our trip

Yeah Justin... after having been a sports writer and even a sports editor for several years -- and having shot most of my own stuff to go with my stories, I can definitely tell you that you'll be wanting some more lenses!! Watch it, though... as it becomes almost as addictive as the bowhunting itself. :)

Thats awesome Justin. See if you can talk them in to giving you one of our tree arms :)

Justin 10-22-2007 08:18 PM

RE: Killing Does: Its The Cool Thing to Do

How about you just give me one instead? They're a little pricey for my taste right now. I have a wedding to pay for, which is going to amount to one arm, one leg, and possibly a kidney and/or a lobe of my liver.

When we win the contest, just make sure you guys send me one and I'll pretend I used it. Just like the rest of the hunting video/tv industry.

Just like the rest of the hunting video/tv industry.
Whats that supposed to mean?

The reason i said that is cause campbell is selling our tree arm with one of their premier camera packages.

I know it definately is pricey, but if you ever get into videoing hunts more frequently it is certainly worth it

Justin 10-22-2007 08:28 PM

RE: Killing Does: Its The Cool Thing to Do

Doesn't mean anything directed towards you guys, just the industry as a whole. There's plenty of people out their either using, or not using, gear that they're being paid to promote when they don't really believe in it. No different than anything else, pro sports, etc. There's a plethora of shows sponsored by companies where you never even see the people using the products, but when they're asked about them they'll all tell you how great they are.

As for your arm, I have in fact heard a lot of good stuff about it. In the latest issue of North American Whitetail it was mentioned that they're using it for their show. You've gotta love free press! However, as I said, the pricetag is a bit much for me right now. Plus I'm only shooting a GL2, so the arm may be a bit overkill. If I ever step up to an XL1 or similar camera I'll be forced to upgrade and most likely go with the HB arm. I looks like it's rock solid.

When you feel someone tugging on your safety harness rope in the dark, that's just me cutting the strap. ;)

MichaelHunsucker 10-22-2007 08:33 PM

RE: Killing Does: Its The Cool Thing to Do

Yeah, i definatly understand what you mean about the industry...

For a GL2 the arm works great, but as you said may be a little overkill. We are actually working on an arm with a much more friendly price tag that will be designed and targeted more toward the average consumer. It will be great for little handycams all the way up to Gl2's, PD170s and even the new Sony V1U HD camera (We just got one and let me tell you...they are SWEET!).

Good luck on the Campbell Outdoor Challenge! Stick a big boy!

A lot of good I'll do you if I'm lying broken at the base of your tree. (other than the temporary entertainment value). [8D]

Don't worry, I'm half-Japanese. I'll figure out at least half of the camera by the time a deer comes by.
