RE: what broadheads w/ 50 lb. bow
I have a 50# recurve and I use regular ol' 100 grain NAP Thunderheads, they work just fine.

RE: what broadheads w/ 50 lb. bow
ORIGINAL: BGfisher I agree with 5 shot on this. Not getting into all the number crunching, but at 205 fps your setup is not producing enough energy to effectively shoot any mechanical head, especailly one with a large cutting diameter. Better to stay with something fairly narrow, 3 blades, and you'll get better results in the long run. Large cuts don't necessarily mean good blood trails. The arrow still has to pass through so there is a low exit hole---in the vitals. I ran a few generic numbers for you, and asuming you are shooting a 380 grain (carbon) arrow (including the 100 grain broadhead) at 210 FPS, your KE is 37 lbs. If you were shooting aluminums, your arrow wieght is in the neiborhood of... 440 (including the 100 grain broadhead) at 210 FPS, your KE is 43 lbs. |
RE: what broadheads w/ 50 lb. bow
I hunted for years with a setup like yours but I was only doing 175 fps! I was 4-4 for pass thru's with muzzy's. I used mechanicals once (Lee Lakosky of all people recommended them to me - sorry for the name drop ) and they only penetrated less then six inches! I was lucky enough to get a second shot off with a muzzy.
5shot is the expert though - go with what he says. |

I use the 3 blade snuffer! Awesome holes andalways a pass through!

I'd stay away from the mechanicals. Instead look at a cut on contact fixed blade. A Magnus Stinger would be perfect. That's a hell of a broadhead, especially for your setup.
