i've been congizant of buck fever since before my first hunt back in the day... it's honestly never really bothered me much... a five second excitement period that i allow to settle before I even shoulder my rifle... all i do is concentrate on the task at hand, control breathing, pick your spot, wait patiently, trigger on the meaty part of your first knuckle, squeeze gently... if you go thru the procedure step by step in your head as you're doing it it'll help you not get over excited about it you'll have a better chance at a great shot... i get very methodical and meticulous when getting ready for my shot, no different than shooting a target to me... there's no benefit to letting the feva take hold... stoic and calculating, there's time for excitement after the shot... it has honestly never been a problem for me... even as a teen (20 odd yrs ago)

one thing i have been told is to "dont pick a spot - pick a hair" its basically the same thing as "aim small - miss small" type of mentality. it also keeps you from drooling over the antlers

Been hunting for 13 or 14 years. I shot a seven point last sunday and was shakin all over when I first saw him. ID the deer then focus on the body language and direction of travel. Plan out what you are going to do if the deer comes right at you, or goes right, etc. Keep your mind off "oh my god it's a deer and I am going to shoot it." ALso, take some deep breaths. It worked for me.

A little trick I did years ago as a kid when I would get shaky even at a doe......I put a little note on the backside of my upper limb that read. "Settle down and pick a spot stupid, it's just a deer!" It would make me laugh and distract my mind enough that it actually worked.
I was going to say "take 2 asprins".

Same remedy. Humor!

yup...when my heart stops beating a little faster when i hear them leaves crunching, im done.

to deal with it, you have to have a different mindset. once i go into meltdown mode, i take a deep breath and calm myself. after i verify its an animal i want to kill, i go into what i call "kill mode" for lack of a better term. i quit looking at the deer...i start focusing on standing up..clipping on the release..shooting lanes...distance...what pin to shoot...drawing...anchoring...and settling that pin on the spot i focus on. after i know its what i want to shoot, i quit looking. focus on the spot and MAKING the shot. overthink it and youll still be in meltdown mode. you gotta go from meltdown mode, to kill mode ASAP. then you can go right back to meltdown mode, like i do, right after the shot.
