Too much wind?

What do you consider too windy to hunt?

When the tree next to me snaps in half, and yes it has happened:eek:

If the trees are dancing around too badly for me to feel safe in them. Generally that's around 15-20 mph....that's just me though.

I think that if you are bowhunting and cant hit what you are aiming at cause of the wind then there is no reason to go hunt.... unless you just want to bring a camera or something.

Wind alone would never stop me from hunting, although it would change the way I hunt.

If you've got standing corn, try stalking a deer in it! It's a blast.

when the tree your in starts swaying to much and it will seriously effect your shot than it is to windy for me

When too many large limbs are being snapped off making it dangerous to be in the woods.
Often times When its windy, I still hunt, just not from a tree.

When birds start falling from the sky due to overexertion.:D

Pretty much what everyone else said. If the tree I'm in is swaying back and forth badly then I'll climb down. However, I do like to stalk while its windy.

Thanks for the replies, I was kinda getting at, Do you think it curtails deer movement above a certain velocity?

Depends. IF you have funnels or cliffs/ledgesto hunt, wind can be your friend. If you are on flat land, it sucks.

yes the windier it gets the more they are on alert i think it cuts down on what they can hear around them. eventualy you reach a point where is hurricane winds and they will stay put and ride the storm out

In Texas the wind is always blowing. Anything over 20+ is a pain, but you can't kill anything from the house.

I don't think so. I killed a deera couple of years ago with athirty mile an hour wind in my face. And yes, it was with abow.

Ditto, I've killed a couple nice bucks in very windy conditions...it was during the rut though, and nothing was keeping these bucks from trying to 'do their business'.

Once I thought it was getting too windy, then things got crazy and when it stopped, I was in Kansas. Funny, all the deer there looked like little people.

If the tree that I am sitting in is swaying to the point of where I don't feel safe...then there is too much wind for me to hunt.

RE: Too much wind?

There are certain places deer and elk hole up when it is extremely windy. These conditions make them real nervous; since they can't smell anything except what is straight upwind from them, can't hear squat, and everything around them is in constant movement. They tend to lay up and focus their attention on the area directly downwind from them. If you know where these places are and can stalk in there with little movement, high winds can actually be a plus. Shootin in the wind sure sucks, though :)

RE: Too much wind?

Living in West Texas, we do get some pretty strong winds. I will still try to get out and hunt anyways. There have been several times that I will go out in the evening while it is really strong winds, and it seems that about thirty minutes before the sun goes down, all the wind stops blowing (I don't know if that is a Texas thing or what) and you can see all the deer begin to move to get to the feeders. Seems like a great time to hunt to me.
