Found a great spot, but who owns it?

I was driving around and came across a small 20 acre woodlot. It's sandwiched between a wastwater treatment plant, a GM plant that's been closed for 20 years, the highway, and a prison. It's at the end of a desolate road, and it's not posted. There's no fence anywhere and no houses around.

I decided to walk around a bit and saw incredible deer sign. It's nothing but nasty thickets with rubs, trails, beds, and droppings. I bumped 2 BIG deer from their beds in 10 minutes of snooping around the perimeter.

I want to hunt it, but I have NO idea who owns it. It doesn't look like anybody is using this land. There's alot of garbage on the property. What would you guys recommend? How can I find out who owns this property? Or would you just hunt it because it's a vacant industrial wasteland that's not posted? As much as I would like to hunt it, I don't think I'd do it without having permission from somebody.

I would not hunt it or be on the land without permission. You should be able to go to your local court house and get a set of land maps. That is how it works in Ks. May not be the same in Michigan. The maps lists out the land and who owns it. You could ck with the waste treatment plant and see if they know who owns it. Good lock, sounds like a good spot to hunt.

No it's not in Flint. The spot I'm talking about is near Saginaw.

go to your county tax collector's office. all land ownerships are public record there, someone pays taxes on the land

I make plat books and other maps for the Federal and State Govt. I would say either get a plat book from the courthouse or city hall of the county you want to hunt in or go directly to the County Assessor. The Assessor would be the best b/c sometimes the plat books are not always correct. As soon as a plat book is finished the next day they are wrong due to the buying and selling of land, split parcels, and straight transfers.
