Well...I Choked

Not going to bore you with the details, but I missed on my first deer (ever) this evening. I'm bummed. It was a 40 yard shot, a distance at which I'm more than comfortable (at least when practicing). Looking back on it, I just choked. Got too excited, didn't settle the pin, and looked away from the bow to tried and watch the arrow. Definitely not the routine I practice.

Anyhow, I'm thankful it was a clean miss. She only hopped about twenty yards away, then blew for about 5 min. before trotting off. No sign of any injury.

I guess this was a good lesson and I'll be better for the experience. Just wanted to vent a little. Thanks.

Won't be the last.;) Great experience tho right? Missing is easy to do, there's a lot of room around those things.:) Fear not, embrace it, remember it the next time your ready to draw, breath, relax and get r done!.:D

Great experience tho right?
Definitely a great experience. I'm definitely hooked and can't wait to get back out there. In fact, just before I read you're reply, I was checking the weather for Saturday morning.

Thanks for the responses. I know misses are part of the deal, but was really hoping to connect on that first one.

Yup, shooting at an animal is a whole different ball game than shooting at targets!!:)

Don't be to hard on yourself, it happens to the best of them. I shot a nice buck this year, made a great shot, two days laterI got so tore up on two does I had been watching for a half hour I miss judged the distance and shot way low, a foot below her, missed her clean. We like to call it ( The Yukes) at my hunt club."Yea, old Smitty got the yukes today and choked on an old slick head, HA-HA- HA....LOL" and the jokes start rolling in. Some person's will even go as far as opening up old wounds onhistory misses from years past. Its a dog eat dog world out there.:([:o][:@]

What are you shooting 40 yards for ?

A clean miss is good but there is way to much wounding going on, Its not OK it needs to stop .

Close is best. Wait for your shot Twenty or under and you will not have this stuff.

I agree about the wounding. I take my ethics seriously. I took the shot at that distance because its one I practice on a consistent basis with consistent success. The shot was in an open area and the deer was broadside. In hindsight, though, I shouldn't have done it. I wasn't steady enough and need to gain some more experience afield before considering a similar shot again.

There is a big differance in foam deer and real ones. I don't feel that there is any reason for these shots with a bow.

I agree, as a beginner, you need to wait for a closer shot.

40yds for the first time. That can be a tough shot, depending on angle etc. But be happy, at least you got a chance to shoot. U will learn grass hopper, that just seeing deer can be enough!

Don't sweat it buddy, do-do happens! Keep your head in the game (focus), learn from your mistakes, and stay after it! If we killed them all, there wouldn't be any to hunt next year.

Good luck on Saturday!

Sorry to hear about the miss! Another chance will come in time and you'll score when the time is right.

Now I am not going to make too much of a comment about the distance of the shot, but I for one can say that I don't think I've ever taken a shot over 30 yards on a live deer. I guess its just personal preference, but if you practice that shot enough, then like I said its all personal decision. Get out there and take another chance!

Dont let it bug ya too bad. I missed twice with my new bow last year. Now this year I have already shot two doe and a buck. Just try to figure out why you did it, and learn from it. Good luck to you!! ;)
