Bag that wallet

Just something I thought about over the weekend. How many of you put your wallet inthe pocket of your camo before heading to stand? I always place mine in a ziplock bag first. It is one of those things that may be overlooked when it comes to scent control.

Good idea, and it will keep it dry. I leave mine in my truck though. I do keep my tags in a zip top bag though.

I never even thought about that. All the years I have been hunting and always worry abut scent and I do carry my LEATHER wallet with me. Not anymore. THANKS!!!!!I CANT BELIEVEI NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT.

Have you ever thought of the leather knife cases as well? Try sticking one under your nose. Smell that leather smell? He smells it too, right before you never see him leave.:D

I have a camo wallet that I use when I go hunting and I leave me "normal" wallet at home. I just grab my driver's license, some money, and my hunting license / tags and stuff them into the camo wallet. I keep the camo wallet with all my camo clothes that are scent proof.

Man, It's truely amazing that our grandfathers could kill a bunny rabbit with out all of this scent crontrol stuff we have today, much less a buck.

Before too long you guys will be hunting out of a human sized condom with a filtered air mask to allow you to breathe.

RE: Bag that wallet

Actually, I thought I wasn't doing enough for scent control until Sunday afternoon. I went out about 7am, no shower or anything else. Put my hunting clothes on that had been laying on the chair all night and sprayed down with Dead Down Wind and sprayed down my new Viper climber I bought and put together Saturday. After getting about 8 to 9ft up a tree I noticed that there was a dead limb hanging down the backside that I didn't see before. I didnt have my saw and wasn't going to pull the stand down and move it so I just decided to hunt at that height. About noon, I heard a rustling over my left shoulder. Two does and a fawn had snuck in behind me and were feeding less than 15ft from my stand, downwind. I didn't have my mask, only my camo Dodge baseball hat on. I turned to see what I thought was a squirrel and the doe looked at me and spring loaded her legs. She bent down and continued feeding with her eyes still locked on me. I blinked, she blew and they were all gone. I had no intention of shooting her at the time, but after seeing her Sat and Sunday and knowing she's extremely jumpy, I'm sticking her next time I see her.

Keep mine in my truck. I only take my bow, therma cell, and calls. Another thing to think about is a watch. Ive seen lots of guys wear watches, and watches stink,.

I don't bring my wallet in the woods with me, I carry a photo copy of my DLfor ID, along with my hunting license and doe tag. I keep these in a Ziploc in my holder that is sealed with green duct tape!:D:D

My watch band smells horrible, but I found out how to get rid of the odor. I soak it in my sink with baking soda on it for a couple of hours. Takes the smell right out.

I leave my wallet in the truck but now I'm thinking that the word is out and the gangsta's are gonna be breaking into my truck instead of just stealing my stand.

It could around here. You can't park at any boat dock, hunting areaor any place that your vehicle isn't being watched constantly. Anything in it is considered the property of the first one to knock out a window.

The only way I see a wallet ruinning a hunt is if you DROP that camo wallet in the woods and can't find it because it's CAMO! lmao I don't bring my wallet into the woods but it really has nothing to do with scent control. It's more about wallet control. I never want to loose my wallet in the woods again, getting all that stuff replaced is a pain in the butt, not to mention sitting on a fat wallet is also a pain in the butt.

I usually put it in the leg pouch of my scentlok pants so I don't have to sit on it for 4 hours.

Other things that could stink:

- Your bow grip

- Your wrist sling

- Your release after practicing all summer

- Your backpack

Just keep that wallet inside your ScentLok and you've got nothing to worry about, right? ;)

RE: Bag that wallet

If you really really are trying to be undetected to a deer downwind...then every single item AND your body needs to be as scent free as possible. have you smelled the inside of your grunt call lately? seriously, a couplemonthes of blowing into it can make it reek. Then as stated there is the wallet, watch...and glasses, belt if you use one....the inside of boots regularly need washing, etc, ect.

it also amazes me how many use the same dryer for thier gear as what had just contained scented dryer sheets 30 minutes ago. there is a noticable residue that i can always detect.

Wow! Now we need two different dryers in our house. One for regular clothes and one for hunting clothes.

Good point, I keep my licenses separate on me, and leave my wallet in my gear box in the car.

I do put my camera in a Zip-Loc, but that is for rain.

Same thing with watches. An old leather watch band can reek. I could ward off vampires with my
old one.[8D] So I bought an all stainless watch this year.

I would if you are shooting deer at 10 to 30 yards. I kinda shoot them from 50 yards on out with a rifle, so its not an issue.

Hmmm, I thought the good Lord provided the first drier. I hang dry my hunting clothes. I thought that was a general practice.

Burnie, I hang dry all my hunting clothes from a fig tree in the yard.

Probably creeped some neighbor out at dark to see a human figure in the tree peaking over the fence. :D

I'm with these guys. I don't take mine into the woods for fear of losing it. According to you guys I guess I need to quit takingmy Beech Nut chew and Dr. Pepper into the woods, buy ScentLok clothing, new dryers, and thousands of dollars in Dead Down Wind products... its amazing our forefathers ever killed anything huh?

I have a front pocket wallet that stays with me all the time. I keep my hunting license and my "credit card" truck key in there as well. So, I lock my keys in my truck and just use the plastic credit card key when I get back to the truck. I've killed plenty of deer carrying my wallet in the woods, doesn't seem to affect my hunting.

LebeauHunter 10-16-2007 09:25 AM

RE: Bag that wallet

I don't think air drying your clothes outside is overkill and I really don't take my wallet or car keys out
to the stand cause I don't want to lose them or have them get in the way (not because they stink).
I guess if I had theft issues I would rethink that.

I think that you can definitely go overboard - your bow and equipment smell like oil, grease, but
sometimes there are things that people overlook and an old stinky wallet could be one of them.
I was sitting on a stand 2 years ago smelling my own stinking leather watch band - that isn't good.
You can't really get odor-free, but you ought to make reasonable efforts to do it. The hunter needs
every advantage he can get and even if the deer winds you if it is very low-level, it might not
spook or react as badly.

Planter 10-16-2007 02:14 PM

RE: Bag that wallet

NO one is scent free. It's just smart to do the best you can. You might be able to go out smelling like a resident of the streets and kill a big buck but it's sure not increasing your odds.
I always keep a nice warm pair of bagged scent "free" Coveralls in the truckfor when I get an unexpected chance to hit the woods. It's not perfect but what the heck.
I go thru more scent spray in a season than you would think possible but it's cheap and I hope it covers some of my odor flaws..

PS.. Wife came into the bathroom at 3AM yesterday to find me putting stick deodoranton my butt and B$%#s. She thinks I'm fried.....

OMG. Ya'll are crazy I don't take my wallet in the woods with me. I have a steel watch band on my hunting watch. The one thing I did notice is the smell of charcoal on my clothes from the Tinks Garment Bag I keep my dream season suit in. Unfortunatly so did a doe lastnight. She didn't spook but came in to about 15 yards and looked up at me in the tree sniffing away at the air. She stared at me for about a minute doing that head weaving thing trying to get me in focus. She then just turned and walked away. I'm shure if I can smell it the deer can too. It just won't trigger the flight responce. I washed all my stuff and put it in a different bag now so we'll see if there is any difference. When I first started deer hunting I used to just shower with unscented soap and shampoo and make sure my cloths were clean. I did alot of ground blind hunting and was NEVER busted. Hell I have had does sticking their noses in the brush blind not 12 inches from me and not spook. I guess I get caught up in all the new gear hype.[:@] Good luck guys and gals.

Trust someone who puts stick deoderant on his roids? I don't think so. lmoa
Reminds me of the time my dad got the Ben Gay mixed up with the preperation H! A mistake a person will only make once in a lifetime![:o]

If you guys are so worried about your bum smelling, try using Scent Blocker handi wipes. Much more roid friendly, and can be used as TP if needed. I keep some with my field dressing kit to wash my hands with. I suppose you could even wipe down your wallet with 'em, I wipe down my bow, arrows, knife, ect with 'em. I even use them to clean up my truck with, steering wheel, dash, shifter.....I used to have paper towels and TP in my pack but the handi wipes are more usefull and take up a lot less space. Don't leave home with out 'em. lol
P.S. Ya could have used 'em to wipe off the burning deoderant. Ya want someting to cool down the old roids, try putting your handi wipes in the fridge before using them as TP....WOW, that 'ill wake ya up! LMAO
