My buddy is a first year bowhunter. Actually first day bowhunter. I've been helping him out getting started and teaching him as much of the ropes as I can before he heads to the woods and learns the rest himself[8D]

Anyway he called this morning. After 5 minutes of listening to him hyperventilatehefinally started to articulate some wordsso I could understand what he was saying.He told me he just hit a buck.

He says he thinks he hit it a little far back. How far is far? I asked. He's not 100% sure but thinks around the middle but is pretty sure the height was good, maybe a touch low if anything.

I immediately think gut shot. I've already been through what to do after the shot with him and stressed the importance of it a zillion times. But I thought I'd reinforce it to him. He told me he remembered what I said and watched the buck as far as he possibly could. He has a good spot where he went in the woods (shot him in a clover field). I told him GOOD now replay it in your head 100 times. Where did he come from. What direction was he facing. Quartering or broadside? How did he react? etc... Then pick a definite landmark that you won't forget because it will look different when he gets down.

Now I said get down and take a path back toyour truck as far away from where he went in the woods. Go home, pace back and forth across the living room. Wait for me I'll be there in awhile, we're not going after him for awhile anyway.

So ... duty calls. I'm off to hopefully help him recover his buck.
