the post weve all been waiting for

well guys, it finally happened! mauser got his first bowkill!!!!

i went to hunt at my buddies camp for the weekend. i been up there a few times before. usually flintlock season we go up and deer hunt and grouse hunt. real big woods even though its 3 miles from the interstate.
friday i bet him up there. he had an appointment that morning and didnt make it back to camp till later on. i threw on my gear and went up to the ridge for the evening. 4pm i rattled in a buck. first deer i ever called in. boy was THAT awesome on its own.

here he is. young 4pt. got to watch him for about 15 minutes within 30yds the whole time and as close at about 10.

saturday morning came and my buddy woke up with me to walk me to his stand. he killed a couple bucks from there in the past. walking in, we busted one that was REAL close to the stand. we both figured it was over, but neither of us said it. he showed me the tree and off to camp he went to wait for the sun to come up so he could grouse hunt the other side of the woods and the mountain top.

i was grunting, using the "can" and light rattling off and on all morning. first deer i just saw a tail waving by..dont know what it is or where it came from. a while later i could swore i heard a deer peeing..or something peeing. the stand is in the top of a hemlock tree and theres alot of hemlocks around so it made for tough vision. not all too long after i heard that, i turned around left and caught a glimpse of a buck. atleast a 4pt but bigger than yesterdays..young buck but i aint picky if hes legal:D he walked away through the hemlocks and i found out my grunt tube is broke or froze or something..

right about 930 i heard some twigs breaking infront/to the right. i looked down and there he comes into the opening. a buck!! i clearly saw 3 ontop of the one side and knew he was right about 20yds away. NO cover at all between him and me but its the only opening. i SLOWWWWLY eased to my feet while he was feeding. he looked..then went back to feeding. so i slowwwly eased back the bow. he looked, but he wasnt in a caring mood. just move of a curious look..not alerted look.

settled my 20yd pin on the crease and watched that arrow sail RIGHT where i was aiming..watched it sink right into that crease and dissappear. awesome sight.

he took off running. wasnt a hard run but you could tell it was a death run. he made it maybe 20-30yds tops. stoof there in a small opening where i saw the first buck and i watched his legs get all shakey and he buckled and went down. i could not beleive it. i called my buddy on the radio, and told him BUCK DOWN!! told him he can come on over he was dead and not going anywhere. he was way uptop of the mountain.

here he is. far from a monster...but, its MY buck and has my tag on him! im proud as heck.

hes in this picture :D

i want to thank you ALL. i remember coming here numerous times and talking about buying a bow every year...you guys helped me and i never bought one...till last year. this was my 2nd year bowhunting. you guys have helped me GREATLY. you really made the learning curve ALOT shorter...thanx for helping me and puttin up with me for so long:D

GERM buddy....i told you youd get a shotout when i killed my buck....here it is buddy!! thanx again....boy that heavy fleece sure is warm and comfy. it was down right COLD saturday. we left camp and it was 35 i believe.

i have no idea what he might score(for the teams sake...) i really dont even know how many points it has lol. legal points i tagged him as a 2x5. that bump on that side on the bases is probably an inch..same with the brow on that side. so i call him a 7pt but really, i dont care. i will have him score hopefully friday or saturday for the team. i skinned him at camp and took him to the butcher today. i left his hide and head at the butcher becasue i had nowhere to store it here at school.

REALLY considering having him mounted. he aint huge...but how many times do you get your first bow kill buck?? ive always wanted a buck mounted but never did it. i dont know if i will or not...pretty sure i am though...BTW that wore looking spot on the brisket was there when i got to him. no idea what its from. i knew i might mount it so we carried him high off the ground...

Nice job bud.. I have some foggy memories of somedeer I have shot but I can remember everything about my first bow deer.It was a small8pt and is the only deer I have ever had mounted. I look at that thing 20 years later and it always brings back fond memories. ROCK ON!!!
